Fuel cell is mounted. The lack of space in the front means we could only fit a 12 gallon cell which sucks. But our brake setup gets in the way of anything bigger. So this will ensure we aren't competitive.

The vr6 uses freedom units for the oil circuit, which means parts are cheap. Oil cooler is all done now.

Finished with the oil bypass plate which goes where the oil filter housing used to go, as it didn't clear the chassis very well, so was relocated to the trunk area.

It is running in the real car, finally. Prepare for fiat domination.

So the oil lines were backwards. Oil pressure sensor was upstream of the issue so it showed oil pressure. My wiener, it has been stepped upon. The head is completely roasted. Not rebuildable without filling and boring the cam journals. Goddamn I am stupid.

Fortunately VW stuff is easier to find than Fiat. We found a used engine (with free transmission!) for less than the core price at a junkyard. Tossed it in the car, and (sound up)...

This car hauls ass. Cannot wait to do a few laps in it. Cannot wait for it to get towed back to the paddock.

Also, big news. Our dashboard (which an embedded thing with no OS, but ignore that) now has a boot screen.

Re: poll: Should we put new rings in this and run it

Ugg glad you were able to scrounge up  a replacement.

How long did it take to destroy the engine?

How were the oil lines hooked up backwards?

At startup up Does the oil go from the oil pump thru the filters thru the cooler then into the motor for lubrication? Everything in series.

By backwards do you mean its Was it going thru the cooler first? Does that matter...much. It might I don't know?

Or do you have a separate oil circuit for the filters and cooler?

Just don't want what ever happened to happen again

Re: poll: Should we put new rings in this and run it

They're plumbed in series. So it should go through the filter then the cooler then back to the engine.

In this picture, on the circular aluminum fitting with the two AN fittings, there are arrows that denote out and in. I had read on the internet that the VR6 block had an in/out that matched up with those arrows, and it made sense because that's a standard oil filter fitting on the side of the block (which in OEM form is used for the oil cooler) and it's even in SAE threads, despite everything else on the engine. Did I actually take the 30 seconds to verify this? No. So the real flow is actually reverse of the arrows.

The reason it matters is because the filter (and most filters) has an anti drianback valve so it's effectively a one way device. So it's critical that the oil goes the correct way, into the filter through the outer holes and out through the large center one.

It took maybe 15 minutes for the engine to get destroyed. The arrows on the fitting have been corrected.

Re: poll: Should we put new rings in this and run it

A while back, Pagel said we need an engine cover.

I tried making one out of fiberglass. After time and effort, I gave up. And now the shop is a mess. Composites: not even once.

I've started creating one out of a scrap of aluminum in the shop. Constraints are: visibility out the back, done in less than a few days (race is in less than two weeks), and only made out of scrap metal in the shop since nobody locally has any.

The original goal was to make the giant gap between the main hoop and roof* be an air scoop for the aux radiator and oil cooler, but now it's less of a scoop and more of just a....flat piece of metal which might blow air in the general vicinity of the coolers.

I'm assuming louvers are OK, since the original fiat engine cover was made of slats as well and nobody complained.

*  giant exocage is there because we originally had a guy who was 6'5" on our team but then bailed before the first race. built the cage to accommodate so that's why it looks so goofy. but i'm not about to remake the cage for aerodynamic gains.
