Topic: Fuel cell cage

Rules say don't connect the cell cage to roll cage.  Does it have to connect to the frame or are body mounts ok?

Re: Fuel cell cage

It needs to be mounted securely such that it isn't going to move in a wreck. Mine is mounted / strapped to the floor panels of the car with big thick fender washers and grade 8 bolts. It has a rollover vent valve and a fill flapper. I took the time to make sure that if the car is upside down that cell is not going to move.

Re: Fuel cell cage

overheard at tech at Buttonwillow:

Larger fuel cells should not be held in ONLY with straps over the top.
I interpret that to mean that the cage should be affixed to the car and there should be something more significant than just 2 straps holding the cell down onto the car.

As for your question of how to affix the cage to the car, I can't offer you any specifics. I can only tell you that I've had my cell cages sometimes welded in to trunk sheet metal and/or bolted through body metal and through long strips of cage spreader plate material that is under the body and that typically spans the length or width of the cell cage. Finding fender washers of any significant thickness takes me longer than it does to cut strips of 10 or 11 gauge metal.
