Topic: How many tires do you think......

How many tires do you think we will go through at Carolina motorsports park?

Now 24 hours of racing time!
Rookie drivers
1996 crown vic.
17 inch rims and brakes.
Bone stock V8, not a police package.

Do you think we will only go through 8 tires?
Or is that unlikely, we will only burn 4?
Or do we need more than 8?

I am bringing 8.  I am just curious your opinion

Re: How many tires do you think......

Tire wear can vary widely.  A heavy car with crappy suspension on skinny tires driven hard will need quite a few. A light car on big wide tires with a good suspension under it will may need only the 4 it starts the race on.

A Crown Vic is more like the first example than the second.  So I wouldn't have less than 6 tires and better to have 8. If this is your first race with the car but you plan on racing more than once buying the extra tires won't hurt you as you'll end up using them at a later race.

The Crown Vic does need stiffer springs. That is if it's a normal Vic and not a police or taxi version as they do have stiffer springs. Also try to dial in come neg. camber if you don't have any now.

Re: How many tires do you think......

I think 6 will get you there but bringing 8 is a good idea. I can usually get through a race on 5 tires, on a Benz as heavy as your Vic, but at Inde (AZ) I’ve also watched 11 tires go to the cords on a frickin Passat this last race. Granted, they were cheap all seasons but it was a surprise to have to go to the last-resort used Riken Raptors last ran on the Benz, just to (almost) make it to the finish...

Also

300 or higher tread wear tires generally wear faster then race specific 200TW street tires, see Hankook rs4 and similar.

Re: How many tires do you think......

Definitely 8 in your situation.  We normally would get 1 1/2 to 2 races out of one set of tires on tracks like Gingerman and Autobahn Country Club but when we went to CMP with our E36 we pretty much burned through 1 full set on Saturday alone.

Re: How many tires do you think......

8 tires for CMP is a good idea, especially with a heavy car.  It is a rougher surface than most tracks and is known to be hard on tires.

If we go back in the fall we will take 8 tires for our Beetle.  We used 4 new tires up completely last fall in an approx 2500 lb car - didn't even bother to save them for practice day at the next race.

One suggestion is to take 4 of your preferred tires and 4 good UHP all season (rain) tires for your backups. If you wear out the primaries you can run the rain tires with only a slight loss of performance (esp. for a new team/drivers).  If it rains you'll be prepared and have a slight advantage over the teams who don't run "wet" tires. At NOLA '19 we ran in our customary mid-pack "B" position all day Saturday, and then in the rain Sunday we were only a couple of seconds off the fastest lap times and progressed up the position chart nicely (for a Beetle).  Pretty sure it was because everyone else slowed down in the rain and our regular pace is so slow that we didn't have to slow down much, but having the rain tires may have helped.

Re: How many tires do you think......

I really appreciate all the responses.
But just now, we learned the original question was flawed.

I asked about 14 hours of race time.
The September CMP Lemons block party was just upgraded to a 24 hour race.

SOOO... How many tires for that car, that team, that track, and 24 hours or non stop racing?

Re: How many tires do you think......

In a 24 hour race you will want to swap or rotate your tires at least once during the race to even the wear.

My Volvo will do an entire 24 hour race at Buttonwillow on a single set of 200 treadwear tires, but we went through 8 tires at Inde in AZ in a 14 hour race.  Size, treadwear, brand, and track surface all make a difference. I don't know CMP, but 8 tires is always better than 4.

Do you know what tires and size you plan to use?

Re: How many tires do you think......

We used up 8 tires in 22ish hours at the CMP 24 last year (off track for 2+ hours).  We run a Civic DelSol with Falken RT615K+ on 15" rims.  I'd imagine a heavier car will need more.  CMP is brutal on tires.  At this point the track surface resembles a cheese grater.

Apparently my name is really "Craigers".  Who knew?
We might be yellow, but at least we are slow
I'm a WINNER!

Re: How many tires do you think......

For a 24 hour race in a heavy car at CMP, I'd add at least two tires to my suggestion above (total of 10).  You can always run unused tires at your next race. As RB92673 mentioned, you'll need to check them at fuel stops/driver changes and expect to rotate them at some point.  If my team was going back this year , we would take 6 BFG Rivals, 4 of the best used BFG SportComps from last year as spares (and for practice day), and 4 of our General GMax all seasons in case it rains (or if we burn through the other sets). We only leave the rain tires behind if the forecast the day before we leave says no rain for the race. We are fortunate to have plenty of rims.

If you are a new team, take it easy at night. Most of my team's drivers drove the 24 at MSR in 2018.  All of us were pretty wide-eyed when we came off the track at night because you are overdriving your lights so badly - even with a good light bar and backing off the pace a little.  We all agreed that driving a full 24 once every three or four years was plenty.  We'll try again once the PTSD fades some.

Another suggestion for CMP is to take plenty of gas cans. If their pump breaks, there is one gas station right outside the gate but it is a two pump station, isn't open after 6pm or before 7am, and is priced like it is the only station in 20 miles (which it is).

what tires? We run an 88 Firebird (not light) we can go a few weekends easy on a set. But we have actual 200 T/W race tires. If you are going to buy the cheapest "performance" tire you can find you might need 2 sets. Some of the cheaper brands with higher T/W have "chuncking" issues. We have 2 sets of rims/tires we'll use the older ones as spares.

Re: How many tires do you think......

Chunking will be an issue if you are remotely pushing that car i would imagine woth 500tw   300 may be okay if it doesnt roll severly and has a decent alignment on it.   What tire size? also big factor.  245/45r17 falken rt615k+we run on an s10 that is probably a little lighter.  we can get a weekend out of them and have spare/ one day tires left.
