Topic: Refueling Rules

I'm trying to figure out how many suits my team will need, and it seems like the fueling rules dictate how many since many of us are the same size. I was reading the rules on refueling, and I'm not sure if 2 or 3 fully suited team members are required. It says that 2 fully suited are for fueling, and someone with a fire extinguisher, but it doesn't specify if they need to be fully suited also. Could someone clarify this for me?

Thanks,
Alex

Re: Refueling Rules

2 minimum.
3 is a better idea.

Lets name your team.

Alex
Bob
Cody
Dan

They take turns driving, in this order.

Alex has been driving, is coming in to get gas and let Bob drive.
In the 2 suit solution:
Alex gets out of the car.
Cody, wearing a t shirt and shorts, helps Alex get out of the car.
Nobody gets in.
Cody walks away from car and gas.
Alex walks over, and gasses up the empty car, while Bob , in a fire suit, watches with the fire extinguisher at the ready.
Alex fills car with gas.
Alex puts fuel cap on car.
Bob gets in car.
Cody helps him get seat belted in.
Alex puts away gas and extinguisher.
Dan does nothing

(Dont swap filling jobs.  Bob doesnt want to use the gas can, because Bob doesnt want spilled gas and fumes on his gloves as he is getting into the car)

That isn't allowed at a race with mandatory hot-pit fueling, as everyone over the wall needs to be in full gear (except for neck braces).

Also, to make sure the answer to kuzcontrol's original question is entirely clear, the person with the extinguisher needs to be in full gear while fueling during the race, regardless of whether this is in the hot pits or in the paddock.

Re: Refueling Rules

Everyone needs their own fire suit, really.  The last thing you want to do is put on someone else's disgusting sweaty suit, and unless the race temp is in the 40s you will sweat.

Sonic speaks the truth.

You asked for the minimum you need.
The minimum you want it one per person.

Re: Refueling Rules

There's an even lazyer way. Driver in suit comes in, drives to track pumps.

You don't want to be sharing race suits.

Just make sure the track has pumps, and that they will be available, before committing to this option. Frequently this isn't the case. To clarify for kuzcontrol, the nice thing about the pump option is that you can treat it just like any other routine fuel-up at a pump, with no need to be suited, or have an extinguisher, or so forth. Make sure the driver has a way to pay, however, as most people don't carry wallets on track.

Of course, if the car is still street-legal, driving to a nearby or not-so-nearby gas station is always an entertaining alternative.

I'll also agree with the general sentiment that even though sharing suits is allowed, most teams don't. Those who do usually only try it once.

Re: Refueling Rules

Thanks for the help everyone! It's good to know what the pitting situation will be like going into it, and this has definitely helped a lot. We'll probably end up renting suits based on your recommendations.

We've also had the track pumps run out of fuel during a race so that can cause problems as well.

Re: Refueling Rules

The only driver gear worth hot swapping is a HANS device, it takes seconds to swap between drivers.  There no way I am going to trade suits with one of my sweaty team mates, besides my smallest is 5'2" and largest is 6'3".

I have had several drivers use race suit rentals.  The stuff shows up in time for your race. It is clean and of good quality.  When you are done, you put it back in the box that it came in and UPS or some carrier picks it up.

To answer your original question, you need two people in full drivers gear for fueling.  One to pour the fuel and one to aim the fire extinguisher at the person fueling.

If we have two people fueling, we have the driver getting out of the car fuel and the person getting into the car hold the fire extinguisher.  That way if the person fueling spills fuel on themselves, they don't have to immediately get in the car.

Usually we have a third suited up that does the fueling as the driver getting out of the car is usually exhausted.  I have an old suit and gloves that is still in current certification that I dedicated to fueling.
