Sorry, I was distracted, the car is awesome.
Those frame rails won't hold much of anything, got to go. I love the plasma cutter
There was even more rust than I thought. Almost all gone... Notice the sad attempt to undercoat the door is just a small spray in the middle. This is typical of every part of the car. No wonder they were cheaper than the beetle.
Some new metal to hold the car's sides together
Almost looks like I know what I am doing
The structural parts are coming together
I got rid of the flux core and went with GMAW, much nicer welds
We don't need no stinkin jigs
Argh, your car will debut first and I'll be accused of being a copycat. I better post some updates.
(Ok ok, looks good, keep up the good work.)
Lots of little parts to cut and weld and hammer on
Congrats, you now join the ranks of Speedy Cop, Spank, Angry Hamsters, Alex Vendler (Metro Gnome) and the twin-turbo Snoopy van guys as being totally mentally ill.
Good work!
Alex Vendler (Metro Gnome) being totally mentally ill.
Good work!
Why you gotta say stuff like that? I am totally sane. It's the car that's crazy.
Wait until you see the new "Aero" package.
wow you guys are gonna take the torch for most labor in a Lemons car in the south, nice!

I am already over 200 hours, most of it while holding some form of torch
Today I finished the front 'tuner body kit' so that the wheels fit inside the fenders
Good to know we won't be the only Renault in Dallas. I guess we will still be the only one running a Renault drive line though.

Wow, appearently I need to make the Wartburg AWD or something since it hasn't been enough to get me on the mentally ill list yet.

Oh, we don't even need to mention your illness. It's just a given.
We have bouncy bouncy:
while that's totally awesome and insane to freehand fabricate the entire suspension system, where's the shocks gonna go? is there some crazy pushrod suspension parts I'm missing?
See the horizontal plate in the second picture. That's the top spring perch, the cheap ass eBay coilovers fit between the lower arms and there.
I'll need springs somewhere around 400 pounds per inch but I guessed at the rates based on coil thickness in the ebay auction I won. Let's hope they are made of actual spring steel...
well, i have some stock 03 nissan maxima springs i'll sell ya cheap, or I believe the stock front springrate of non-CVPI crown vics run around 400lbs, so that's not a bad range to be in. Thanks for pointing out the perch, i kept looking at the 3rd pic thinking "okay it CAN bounce but where's the stuff that LETS it bounce?
Awesome build
Thanks for the support. I've gotten a bit behind with personal issues and getting the flu so I missed 5 work days on the car.
On a positive note, I ordered rubbers for the car
Time to kick some butt.

Those three are all natural. I love Texas.
Mara ( in the middle ) is even an experienced Lemons driver having competed in Houston this year.
The one on the left can visit the Stigs...
I finally broke down and bought the Carrol Smith books.
I had them years back and couldn't find them so I have been building this car from memory. They are worth the read if you do anything with race cars, even Lemons.
Now that I am seriously running out of time I decided I should have the books at hand.
The front is almost bouncy bouncy like the back:
Jigs are good:
One set done:
Here's where they go:
A bit of a tease...
DAMN! I'M GOING BALD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Freaking awesome. Keep pushing!
CRAP
I need a narrow steering rack, very narrow like 13" joint to joint.
I was going to do the 'wartburg rack mod' but the Dauphine rack is way too wide. Something about stock A-Arms being 6" long and mine are 21"...
Suggestions?
Do a rack that has the tie rods mounted to the center of the car. Lancia Zagato, VW Fox, dasher, quantum, Audi 4000, 5000...
Heres the VW quantum power rack. Also commonly found in the JY in a manual version in VW fox
It's not elegant, but you can use a steering box with a drastically narrowed center link and idler assembly.
You know, like this:
Unfortunately I crushed out my parts fox a few days ago and left the rack thinking "nah, nobody would ever want that".
You know, like this:

Now that's a Lemons worthy solution...
