How about the big chains used in the drive systems of the V8 Toronados and Eldorados? I'm sure they're hell to pull out of a junked car, but you should be able to find plenty of late-70s Eldo donor cars.

Just to toss another chain option on the pile:  Lots of domestic 4x4 transfer cases use big chain drives for the front output.  And they're a heck of a lot easier to pull than the honerable Judge mentioned sources...

The part that I particularly love is that not only did 24hours of Lemons give me an outlet for my "creativity" they also configured it in such a way that i get other people to help pay for it!

*edit* it's official, we got accepted to the gingerman race april 16th and 17th. gotta hustle now!

Re: Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement!

a double-cardan CV can handle out to 7deg at that speed because the only sliding contact is the spherical phasing joint in the center of it

Just in case you go that route, '69-'76 (and maybe other year) full-size Cadillacs use a double-cardan joint driveshaft. The joints are strong enough to handle a hot-rodded 500cid engine, so they'll likely be beefier than anything else you can find.

Re: Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement!

actually, I made a decision on the drive train power transfer. i remembered last night that i know someone locally that drag races harleys. i talked to him for quite a while on the application and he mentioned the chain possibilities if i go with a 630 sprocket.

you can see some of them here: http://www.ekchain.com/drag.htm

I ordered two custom sprockets, 50 and 28 tooth (12" and 6-5/8" respectively) to give a ratio of 1.79

Then I'm using the quick change box that was very generously given to me. re gearing it with 1.7:1 gears giving me a total ratio of 3.04:1

I'm avoiding going to the extreme end of the quick change gear set so i have room for tuning left once it's drivable. quick change gears can be had for cheap and they could be replaced in a very short amount of time.

as long as i don't have to go to the high dollar drag chain, it's a pretty cost effective solution. but even the high dollar drag chain is only about $240 since what i need is so short.

now that this is all figured out, i need to finish mounting the engine and transmission.

Re: Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement!

did a bunch of design based on the quick change box that squirrelly_z600 is giving to us:

http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/gearbox%20assembly%20back.jpg
http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/gearbox%20assembly%20front.jpg

Essentially it holds the flywheel like there was an engine there and allows clocking of the quick change box to keep the chain in tension.

It also reverses the direction and steps up the speed.

Just make sure they mark the plane of rotation so you can avoid the flying metal jugs when they let loose.

Re: Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement!

not a whole ton of visible work this weekend. made the rear trans and engine mount, spent a BUNCH of time getting the alignment just right.

the plan is to get the axle shafts done sometime during this week and then at least get started on the suspension crossmember before next weekend.

http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/IMG_0038.jpg

yes, that 2nd one was a plasma cut bracket that i screwed up and decided not to recut.

Re: Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement!

Yay, another night, another bit of progress...]

got the axle drive flanges done:

http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/IMG_0039.jpg
http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/IMG_0040.jpg

they are cut down subaru inner CV housings and a new flange welded on.  the flange matches the 1st generation MR2 bolt pattern since that also matches the wheel spline. i will still need to shorten the center bar on a pair of longside 1st gen MR2 axles to get the right length.

and the other good news is the motor plate came back from the water jet shop.

http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/IMG_0042.jpg

i just need to clean it up, thread a bunch of holes, and a few finishing touches and they'll be ready to go.

When the engine is installed, I'll want the whole collection of photos for a TTAC post. Nobody will believe this thing.

not a problem. the directory is open on the web server: http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/ it has all the pictures and a few extra. or you can e-mail me whenever and i'll send you a zip file of the whole thing.

you've got my permission to use any of the pictures and videos in any way you see fit. I just ask that you notify me and send me a link so i can read the article. I'll also gladly answer any technical questions you have to help fill out the article.

The sad thing is, the previous car was way more of a hodgepodge of different car parts and a fabrication nightmare. this swap really just comes down to that power transfer assembly and the rest is fairly menial engine swap stuff.

That being said, this is an insane schedule to do this on. but thankfully I have a VERY understanding (and very pregnant) wife. to be able to work on this thing on feb 14th! smile

Re: Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement!

Radial engines have a lot of gyroscopic effect - many WWI pilots were killed because, at full throttle on takeoff, the flight controls rotated 90degrees (ie. turn left to pull up, etc).

I wonder if the MR2 will wheelie when turning one way vs. another... ?  wink

Outstanding swap!

Some encouragement...
