Topic: Cheap or challenging, you decide (Wartburg content)

So one of our cheif procurment specialists and head mechanic on race day (when I'll be too paranoid to think right) has found a piece of our wartburg puzzle.

See we needed a specific donor for plans which are in the works, but we are cheap.  Or for the sake of Lemony goodness let's say we like a challenge.

He was able to procure said donor for the grand total of "please haul this POS away" right *after* it had finished competing in a demo derby.

Yeah, that should just about do it.  Reliablility be damned, full steam ahead.

As soon as I get to pick things up I will have pics.  Right now there's alot of balls in the air, it's getting confusing.

Ok so I did manage to pick up part of the equation today.  I put a call out to the local car club for some wheels which would work.  One guy had a brand new pair, sadly only a pair but its a good start.

I'm a firm believer in putting as much rubber under a car as I can, these should help no?

I was going to post teaser pictures of the full 944 suspension, brakes and fuchs wheels that were dropped off friday (free) but they are for the vw bus so it would have been cruel.  I did eye them for awhile thinking about what they would be like on the wartburg though.

Remember -- no matter how badly you cheat on the Wartburg, the Judges will look the other way.

E30 guys take note -- no matter how much you don't cheat, we will hassle you constantly every time, no matter what, forever.

Because we hate you.

"This is the scene where I get shot," Bronson said. "I have these little squibs that explode to make it look like bullets are hitting." "Fascinating," said Bergman. "I never knew how they did that." "You mean," asked Bronson, "you don't use machine guns in your movies?"

While I appreciate the gesture we are actually on track to build this thing legal.  After all we still have to come in legal for GRM and things that arent part of the budget here, are for GRM, like the wheels and tires and the roll cage, those alone eat up most of the GRM $2000 budget so we have to keep it cheap.

GRM even counts transportation costs to pick up the car so our "free" wartburg isnt free in their eyes.  Luckily we've arranged to tow a car from our area out to ohio for the trip which will pay the trip expenses and keep it free.

So far we've gotten fairly lucky with donor parts, but that was part of the plan all along, to do a build which lent itself to readily available free/cheap donors.

Oh, and Im broke.   If I had funds I'd cheat with utter abandon smile

As for E30s, our team has 2 that were purchased below Lemons budget, and a Miata for that matter, we didn't even consider them for entry because, well, even if you can get them cheap somehow, it still feels like cheating smile

Re: Cheap or challenging, you decide (Wartburg content)

if you could somehow weld the Miata to the two E30s, that might make us happy.

Also, any team with two E30s and a Miata has cheat in their heart. Goes to intent.

You don't need to lie about the Wartburg.

LOL, I wont lie about the Wartburg, I want to make something spectacular for everyone so if I go over budget I'll put it out there, but when you see what we do you'll understand how it can be done cheap.  I've spent my entire life building cars on the cheap so I take this as a personal challenge to prove it can be done.  You've given us a free pass, no point in lying.

The E30s, I havent see either one but one of them will be run in BABE as we break into 2 teams so my co driver and I will run in the Wartburg and the other 2 (Wakemen brothers) will run in the E30.  They ran the Miata in 08 on BABE.  It was a stupid good deal.  Wouldnt start and the owner was moving so he put it on CL for $250.  I'd have bought it myself but it was at the other end of the state, where as luck has it, so is Jeff W.  So I sent him to get it.  Its way nicer than a $250 car should be, turned out the aftermarket alarm was buggering the ignition easy fix.

That widebody yugo had a grand total investment of $550 in it and most of that was for the magnesium CD30 wheels.   Im a cheap bastard and proud of it.

Re: Cheap or challenging, you decide (Wartburg content)

Would this work?

Step 1.  Build very cheaty E30
Step 2.  Debadge E30
Step 3.  Debadge Wartburg
Step 4.  Put Wartburg badges on E30
Step 5.  Breeze through BS inspection

Lucky for you we were born yesterday.

Unlucky, we were born on the the wrong side of the bed.

methinks that might not work.

alternate plan

1. Mold wartburg body in Fiberglass
2. Attach FG body to E30
3. ???
4. Profit

Im having odd fantasies of an E30 limo with a miata drivetrain.....the Wakemen brothers are hiding their cars as I type no doubt.
