Topic: The Day Before

I'm going to the Reno race(as a spectator), but since I'm flying into Sacramento on Friday, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for things to see or places to eat.  Since it's less than 100 miles away, I'm including the Bay Area as well.

Re: The Day Before

I assume you're renting a car if you want to go to the Bay Area?

I'm not from the area but there ain't much to see/do in Sacto. It might be cool to check out Lake Tahoe since you'll be going to Reno anyway.

I'm flying into Sacto on Friday morning as well, but one of my teammates is picking me up in his RV and we're going straight to the track.

Ooh, Train Museum! In Old Sac, some good Gold Rush era replica buildings and Big Steam Engines... You can easily spend the day there, but a couple hours is enough to get the essence.

Re: The Day Before

Tahoe should be pretty by now, maybe some residual snow (i never made it up there for the most of it sad). If you're willing to come to the Bay Area, SF is always fun, I unknowingly ended up driving down Lombard Street when I went for a drive up there last Saturday. At 10 pts per tourist, you'd have to beat 50 if you went wink

Re: The Day Before

Virginia City is pretty close to Reno and definitely fun for that Wild West mining town feel. Places to eat in Reno? I've always liked Beto's Mexican restaurant on 5th Street downtown. Close to the freeway and quite good.

Re: The Day Before

Yeah, I'm renting a mystery economy car.  Avis says it'll be a "Chevrolet Metro or similar".

Re: The Day Before

I'm sure you already know this, but it's about 2 hours from Sactown to Reno, and the Bay Area is in the opposite direction, so it would be quite out of the way. So it'd be tough to get any sightseeing in and get to the track at a reasonable hour on Friday.

I'm getting picked up in the RV at Sacto airport at about 9am and heading straight to the track from there.

Re: The Day Before

I make trips to KC and back on a fairly regular basis, so a 3 or 4 hour drive ain't no thing.  It beats driving the whole way from ICT to Sacto by yourself as a co-worker of mine did.

Re: The Day Before

As a local, I can say that Virginia City has a good day-trip worth of tourist appeal.  There're a lot of little old-timey casinos and things of that nature to waste a few bucks in, and the food's okay in the places up there.

There really isn't all that much to go check out considering the race schedule if you're only getting in on Friday, in all honesty.  Not unless you plan on taking a while away from the race to decompress, in which case Virginia City is about the furthest you'd likely want to range.

I was up in Sparks (30m from the track) and found a great Mexican place called Lupitas, where my roommate and I were the only anglos in the place.  It's a few minutes off the highway, though.
