Topic: Follow the adventure

Not much there yet (since we don't have the car yet) but I've set up the Wartburg build site for anyone interested in following along.

We know a car-freak dude in the Czech Republic who can probably score you some Wartburg parts.

I was wondering where to get brake parts wink

But I think I have a slightly different approach to this dilemma....things are too modern, Im going to backdate it a bit.....no, seriously.

So no need for an engine swap or anything then - you are ready to go (slowly and smokily).

Glad you got it home fine.

For those interested it turned out to be pretty simple.  Most of the time was spent hunting down a 6v battery in the local area.

We hit it with 12v for a quick test and the starter worked.  Checked the plugs and we had spark.

We disassembled the carb and cleaned it out as best we could, rigged up a temporary fuel supply (16oz bottle and a hose) and found the aforementioned 6v battery and a new ignition switch (so we could stop electrocuting Chris when he crossed the wires to start it) and it fired right up.

A little fiddling with the choke and she ran, nuttin more to it.

Brakes are gone but the e-brake worked good so those of you who saw us out and about may have noticed the 2 man driving technique, one to drive one to brake.

We never drove it out of first gear so I can give no real driving impressions.  It was fun, albeit primative, and it seemed to like bombing through the mud puddles alot.  As one of the judges riding with us pointed out (sorry I was so focused on not crashing I didnt even see which one of you jumped in the back seat there) the dirt/mud roads around the infield are probably the conditions to which it was accustomed.

And to the team who had to follow us around sucking our exhaust fumes as a penalty, thanks for being good sports guys!

Re: Follow the adventure

Gut the engine, hide a Wankel in there. No one will know the difference given the oil consumption.

It was great seeing the thing acutally running. I didn't know that we were allowed to enter lawnmowers in Lemons racing? What's next, a snowblower?

Magic spinning triangles were considered for a power source, and have not yet be ruled out entirely.

But up front?  That's so boring.  wink

Glad everyone enjoyed getting to see it run, noone was more surprised than us.

Small update posted today as I did a test fit of one of the potential wheel and tire combos we have kicking around.

Re: Follow the adventure

Those look great!  Since you have Porsche parts laying around, a flat 6 in the trunk would go nicely with the wheels.  smile

Any porsche motor I could afford would be underpowered compared to much cheaper and more reliable alternatives smile

And the porsche wheels were supposed to go on my VW bus, the wheels and some other bits were given to me by a friend who is upgrading his 944 to an LS1 (no I dont have or want the 944 engine)

Actually the trunk is the only part of the car that is rusted.  The side panels there are good but the floor is rotted, granted by northeast standards it's merely a flesh wound.  The car is surprisingly clean and solid.   Were it not for all you crazy Lemons folks and my teammates relying on me to build some crazy mutant I'd just restore the thing, its awfully nice.

Re: Follow the adventure

I would be more impressed if you kept the 2 stroke three cylinder engine, but it would be so hopelessly slow on the track that you'd be more in the way than anything.  Whatever you do, it will be very cool.  I was surprised how clean it looked at Nelson.

Re: Follow the adventure

The complete lack of parts availability and the tendancy for the engine to self destruct while going downhill has ruled out keeping it.  Not many downhills on the race track but plenty of them during the BABE rally.

Some more photos from today.

Re: Follow the adventure

WOW...uhhh,  I would have laughed off your notions of corrosion until i saw the trunk pan, hehe.

hey, I have an idea, that could keep the spirit of the wartburg, get you more power and reliability too.

Re: Follow the adventure

Actually the trunk is mostly surface, there are about 3 holes all less than 2" square, fairly easy patch job.   Like I said for a northeast car, it's a flesh wound smile

We had discussed the idea of something like this, someone even suggested using an outboard boat motor, well, just because I guess.  It would certainly be unusual.

The more I look it over the more different ideas I come up with.  I need to pick a plan and stick to it or this thing will never get done smile
