Topic: Chihuahua Express 2013 or USA Invades Mexico with $500 cars! Bad IDEA

The EL Expresso or the Chihuahua Express is a race in Mexico that several teams are going to try this year.  Jay has no problem with us talking about the race here on his web page but asked us to be sure to not to sully his reputation by including his baby in this "stupid idea".  24 Hours of Lemons = no affiliation.
So what exactly is the Chihuahua Express?  It's a 3 day race that costs $2250 for 3 days of racing around the Copper Canyon in Mexico.  Speed and budget are unlimited. We're racing a Lemons CrapCan.
Lemons Teams are being welcomed with a few changes to the cars.  The biggest change is the car has to be safe for two  people.
Please don't enter the race if your team is on limited funds and you will have to miss a Lemons event, Please.
We are racing the 65 Barracuda and will update as the race progresses.   NSF will splinter and gain the support of 2 other teams to join the event.
Open a discussion w/ other teams to join us.  A/B class cars are your best bet.

It's official-->  last entry is us, NSF and friends.

Yes, they will... with one or two more entries.  Plus, for the crap cans, they'll install (no charge) automated fire supression.

This has to be the worst idea of the year.

That being said, I'm still in with NSF for the Express.   I've been telling anyone who will listen about this..   The important thing now is to get more entries to really make this class happen.

Surely with less Lemons events this year, there are other teams itching for more time behind the wheel?

Dear Bob,

You are already listed, with pleasure and very welcome!

Did you really meant to be listed under the Crapcan class?

Kind regards.

How do I respond to this?!

This is the easiest race to enter for international racing.  It's only 150 miles from Texas and the speeds are unlimited and the road are very good.  Route books are provided and are accurate.  Police escorts are omnipresent.

The cops are great and you are escorted everywhere.  10 events and there has never been any issues, ever.  We're treated very very well.

The whole adventure is a blast.

I passed a cop going about 140 MPH and he gave me a thumbs up!  Whoot!

I have no contacts with Chump - but maybe someone could post up on their forum looking for cars?

Hell, they already have races in Mexico.

Looks like Mike Feezor is fielding a team.

We need one more crapcan to make it official.

Right now we have one helmet that will pass Tech, IE HANS device.  We another team member to check the rules and verify we have enough helmets.

The transmission rear seal is being installed today.

Spank did you get a team together or is your guy still on the fence?

That would be me.  I would say I'm out.  Spank has been offering/bugging me to throw my latest car on his trailer when he goes to the Ridge and BFE.  I'm strongly considering that and couldn't do Chihuahua plus 2 extra Lemons races that I hadn't originally considered.  He is doing the cage on this car and I will say he keeps peppering me with suggestions to make the cage rally legal.  I can only guess that this is with the Chihuahua in mind.  I've only driven the thing 100 yards and I'm not entirely sure it will go 70mph.  There's only so much fury that 875cc can contain.  As an added kicker, Chump just announced the Ensenada Grand Prix.  I'm going to have a hard time passing up racing through the streets of Ensenada in a car with a giant sombrero on the roof and a margarita maker in the trunk on Cinco de Mayo.  Plus you get an FIA racing license out of the deal.  Sorry Bob, I think I have to sit this one out.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2013 or USA Invades Mexico with $500 cars! Bad IDEA

As much as I'd like to have someone else take the bullet, my bigger problem, bigger than the need for a co-driver and for $$$, is childcare issues. Being gone Wed-Monday night just won't work for this year in April. And since this whole idea was also framed with something like, "don't do it instead of a Lemons event," I'm going to choose to pass on it for this year.

I can get my family to take vacation days and travel to the Ridge. I can't get that to happen for Chihuahua Express.

AAAWWW Mike,

That makes me sad.  I had visions of the Cor-veggie...  We'll hoist one up for you guys!

We just need one more team to make a it a race.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2013 or USA Invades Mexico with $500 cars! Bad IDEA

Still considering attempting this one. I'd need a few good drivers.

Car would be a Lexus SC400. All stock, good cage, just all the dead weight removed. Being a Lexus, it would have a decent chance of both finishing AND going fast.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2013 or USA Invades Mexico with $500 cars! Bad IDEA

My church mission team used to do work in Pitorreal (just a few miles outside Creel). Copper Canyon is beautiful, and the highway was brand new last time I went there (2008?). That said, Chihuahua is not a safe place, and anyone who looks like they might have money is a target for kidnapping. We decided we'd be better off doing our mission work in Honduras, which has the highest murder rate of any country that keeps records.

Still looks like tons of fun.

Without a doubt tourist are targeted regardless what country is visited.  We have a hard and fast rule about always staying in pairs when venturing away from the very secure hotel areas.  If the car breaks down the team must stay with the car until help arrives, period.

It's not Disney Land down there, it's the real world.  It's real racing and people drive into and over mountains and die.  There has never been an incident in the 23 years where a team member has been the victim of crime, in fact just the opposite.  We are treated like hero's.

Like Lemons we don't go down there to win the race, I don't ever want to go that fast.  We go just to enjoy the sites, people and try to keep a pre-1965 car going for about 2,000 miles really, really fast.

I hope you join us.
