Topic: Mustang II hub compatibility?

I'm posting here because this is a personal project, not a soon-to-be LeMon. I recently bought a basketcase '61 Sunbeam Alpine. It came with no brakes, and front suspension parts (like wheel bearing seals) are expensive or hard to find. I found out that Mustang II spindles will swap onto it with a bit of machining. Now I'm trying to find a 4-lug hub with a divorced rotor that will bolt onto the Mustang II spindle and can be scrounged in a junkyard. I'm getting a set of '93 Mustang 4cyl front spindles/hubs/rotors/brakes for free, but I have no idea if the hubs will bolt onto the MII spindle. The donor told me about Factory Five's adapter to use Mustang struts with an upper A-arm, but they're $70 a piece, and I'm not as confident they'll work with the Sunbeam's geometry. Anybody up on Ford swap-ability enough to tell me what will work? I am aware there are 11" Grenada rotors out there, but they're one-piece hub/rotors, and I really, REALLY prefer divorced rotors.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

You can make, or have made hubs without rotors by taking a stock rotor/hub machined.  The rotor gets cut off leaving only the center hub part. Anyone with a lathe could do this as long as the lathe is big enough to fit the rotor in their chuck
The new slip on rotor is then the problem. What you will need to look at is the offset of the rotor to the hub mount. If the center hole is to small that can be fixed, if the bolt pattern is wrong, drill new a one.

I have to ask what is your concern or need to have a separate hub and rotor?
Most new cars do use this system but a one piece rotor/hub worked for the car manufacturers for quite a few years.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

Jim said it.  Unless you go to willwood, you will have to Machine.  Its much cheaper *think $40 a hub VS. $120 a hub* for the machined.

Willwood does offer something, but like I said its about 120 a piece to get them.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

I wonder if a 2nd gen RX7 4 bolt hub and rotor will work.....

Wrong bolt pattern.

What bolt pattern are you looking for?  4 x 4.25 I am guessing?

The RX7 is 4 x 4.5".

I figured I would leave this here so future persons can find it if need be.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

This is an interesting challenge.  I suspect there is probably no direct bolt-on.  The Escort was 4x 4.25 and used divorced rotors, but I don't think a FWD hub would not work.  Maybe you could use a rear hub from the Escort and get the front rotors to work? I'm just spitballing.

I have a really sweet setup to run PBR calipers from a 02ish mustang gt on granada 11" rotors, on mustang ii spindles. In fact, I have drop spindles too.

Aren't mustang II and pinto spindles the same?

If so, could you please elaborate?

Yeah, pinto and mustang ii are the same, essentially.

I found that BAER makes an 11" street brake kit for the mii. They use the pbr caliper, granada rotor, and a CNC'ed bracket. They dont sell the bracket separately, but I was able to talk them into sending me a pair, with a sob story about my customer loosing them...

What lug pattern are you looking for?

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

It's 4x4.25 (aka 4x108). I have a set of 5.0 turbine wheels that bolt on it and fit perfectly. I have a pair of 215/60-15s on the rear and they look huge, but fit with perfect backspacing.

Escorts/Tempos have a strut suspension, and the caliper/pad bracket is part of the strut.

I think my biggest question is if the '93 Mustang hubs will bolt onto a Mustang II spindle. If so, that's my plan.

I currently have about 20 sets of fox 4 lug wheels, so that would be good.  Pinto would also work.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

93 Fox Mustang doesnt have a seperate rotor/hub.

this might be what you are looking for, except the bolt pattern

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

FWIW, I also found this:

A previous owner swapped on a set of Grenada front disc brakes (still have the rear drums, and a manual master cylinder - don't plan on changing any of those for now).
I have some wheels I want to use, but they are GM (4.75") bolt pattern. I found someone that can re-drill the rotors, but they want $150 or so, and I'll have to do it again if I ever need new rotors.

Some Mustang II brake kits offer the choice of granada rotors, or some kind of GM rotor. They might fit. Find out what they use.

Found some more on it. The rotors they use are 68-72 GM mid-size. (chevelle etc.) But the bearings and races must be swapped into them from the ford.

That sounds correct. You'll need to knock out the SET2/6 bearings and press-in SET12/13 instead...outside diameters are the same, so no biggie there. In case it matters on your car, keep in mind that there's a relatively large difference in track width between the Granada and GM rotors (GM is much wider IIRC) that could cause some tire to fender fitment issues if you're already close as is.

Your wrong. The SN95 chassis on the 1994 Mustang was the first with a separate hub and rotor. The 1993 Mustang was like all the other Fox Mustangs that came before it had a one piece hut & rotor with a 4 lug bolt pattern, even the Cobra model!  WITH ONE EXCEPTION! The 107 limited production 1993 Mustang Cobra "R" models. They were built using  SN95 parts including the steering knuckle, hub, & rotor that was later used on the 1994-1995 Mustang Cobra models. I owned 3 Fox Mustangs including one of the rare 1993 "R" models.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

Crapola. I thought for sure that Ford would have moved into the modern era by then. The Pirate Jack kit looks pretty sweet, except that it's five lug, and I'm trying to stay away from spending hundred of dollars on this car.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

Dredging up my old post now that I've scrounged some MII spindles. What is the largest 4x108 rotor that will bolt on a MII spindle? I've accepted the fact I can't get separate hubs and rotors. I'd love to put some 11" rotors on and use adapters to run cheap GM metric calipers, but it doesn't appear there are any 11" 4x108 calipers that are widely known. I've grown to like the look of the Mustang Turbine wheels, plus, they're paid for, so I'm trying to avoid going to Granada rotors. Thoughts? Bearing swaps are okay, so long as the bearings are readily available. Is there a resource for matching up these components short of taking a spindle to the junkyard and trial-fitting everything in sight?

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

I *LOVE* Rock Auto. Play on their website long enough and you can find anything. I used my Google-fu to find some StopTech 11" rotors. Took the part number and wild-carded it in Rock Auto's search field.

I've been looking for an off-the-shelf solution to this problem for awhile now and thought I'd look up the FFR component...

This one says that they are sold as a pair, but lists shipping weight at 4 pounds.

This one implies that two are required per car, but lists shipping weight at 8 pounds.  Ha!

I don't know what to believe...but if you can get two of them for $68 (Seems unlikely given the price of other components in the store), that would actually be a pretty decent deal.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

Yeah, $65-70 each was what I was seeing. I decided to go the MII spindle route - it's tried a proven to work with the Alpine geometry.

I think I found my inner bearing to fit the Fox-body hub to the Mutt spindle. Only took me four hours.

Re: Mustang II hub compatibility?

Ugh. I disassembled the driver's front and found early Alpines used a swivel joint instead of a ball joint on the lower control arms. Upper ball joint was shot. Upper ball joints are $145 for a pair. I think I'm now in the market for a full set of later control arms ($30 per ball joint).

But...
Has anyone fabbed a set of control arms from AFCO (or comparable) circle track suspension components? I priced out some clevises and heim joints and it looks comparable in price. Since this won't be an every day driver, I'm considering it. Problem is I can't find a complete selection of the needed parts in any one place. Is this not a good idea?

I have two of the factory five adapters your taking about came with the kit I bought .
