Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Bought four scales from Sammy's (300lb. ones for $31.18 total) and managed to weigh the Jag front end, rear end, drivetrain, and Corvair body. It is much easier to do with a lift. Motor and trans nearly maxed them out! We are going with the lowest center of gravity build technique, since weight savings is out of the question. We might be able to save some weight by removing the radiator, since we didn't need one last race. Might need that catch can ballast though...

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

The problem with Corvairs is that when you start cutting on one panel, you can't stop with just one. Full floor removal as rust has had its way with the original sheet metal.

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Well the springs are in and the car sits about four inches taller than the jaguar, must be some metric conversion problem. Driveshaft is mocked up (love the smell of burning rubber from an isolated shaft), as well as the steering (is there a limit on the number of joints you can use?). Next up, brakes, do I need a PhD in hydrodynamics to figure this thing out? Engine driven hydraulic pumps, special Newtonian fluid, Whitworth fasteners, madness!

I like the cage/tub in the driver's seat area. I assume there was a lot of cursing, half-math and dry fitting to get there?

Yeah, it's going to be interesting. Since the tranny mount is asymmetrical to the driver's side, we are thinking of right hand drive for more room for the seat. The cursing comes from trying to weld to rust.

To answer another Captain's question:

https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bwd77mMKZxPXTXJXNld6QlBrWFE

The floor was originally very rusty and not really connected to the rocker on the driver side.

https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bwd77mMKZxPXX2gtR1FRTFhmNVk

After seat position was decided (distance from wheel and control centering).

https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bwd77mMKZxPXN0M0Yy02OGQtRTQ

Temporary mounts made from angle stock and round tube were created to confirm seat angle and position. Marks were made on the floor to represent mounting position (our seat was on a slider, so max back position was against main hoop in roll cage). Our seat position was too high and would not have passed Tech, therefore the floor must go. I used a digital angle finder to set seat angle in relation to rocker.

https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bwd77mMKZxPXdkJ3QnFpM3hLWVU

The tube (1.25" x .120") that is welded to the rocker panel (upper right corner of picture) extended across to the passenger rocker panel, because the floor was so bad, to support the front of the seat. While the two tubes that parallel the driveshaft support the sides of the seat. The seat is bolted to two pieces of 1" x 1" x .125" angle that have nuts welded in them, the tube between the mounting flanges is for the anti-submarine belt. Originally all the tubes were straight, but as the seat was lowered more and more to pass Tech and for visibility, the tubes needed to be bent to still be able to weld into good metal (you can mock it up with scrap tube and add bends at final install). The angle of the side rails is the same as the original mock-up, find something in the car to measure front to rear position and use a plumb bob from points on the roof if necessary.

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Coming close to the finish line as mock up is almost done; pedals, booster (thank you 1978 Ford Mustang II) and master cylinder are in. Exhaust and shifter are left, then I can start my own version of Burning Man. Looking forward to firing her up again and start reducing the wiring. Then some final sheet metal and line running and we should be able to take her down the street.

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Last night had frowny face take the Corvair engine apart to liberate the #6 piston (it sits in the house next to the MHF trophy). I sorta feel bad about what we did to that motor, considering it was in pretty good shape (no ridge, not rusted together, good compression), that engine in a street car may have lasted years. Then I remember what it came out of and realize that if we had not turned it into a Lemons car, it may have not been driven ever again. Though our car ran for only 90 min, that car was ALIVE for those 90 min. Which begs the question if you could choose how to go the big racetrack in the sky, would you want to be carted off to your demise without a last weak breath, or would you want to go with a supermodel, banging gears and your heart exploding? I choose the latter, and that is what Lemons is to me. The last hurrah of a dying machine, though not designed to, who decided to race into the unknown at full throttle. I will miss the Blue Smoke Six and have thoughts of what could have been, but in the end I think we gave that engine the best Viking burial we could have.

Bought wheels off CL. Now car is in race trim (minus theme). Once we sell the scrap, we should be able to wrap them in new rubber. Need to cut front springs to compensate for lack of British Steel frontend. Chevy wheels, Ford brakes, Jag drivetrain, maybe we should get a Toyota radiator and Honda alternator so nobody is left out. Are Madza oil coolers faster? We seem to be trapped in 1993 also. The truth is out there...

Less than 60 days till PNW. Car still has not been driven, but last weekend the drivetrain went back in and the brakes were inspected. Result: calipers good, but brake pads and rotors are junk. New parts ordered and maybe the second car's parts can be used as backups. Driver's spindle bad and all bearings need to be replaced. Harness back in this week and test drive this weekend (hopefully).
