Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Oh, and as always, WE ARE LOOKING FOR A FOURTH TEAM MEMBER! In the Portland OR area who is willing to meet once a week to turn wrenches or whatever. I REALLY DON'T CARE. Show up weekly, pay your fees, and race a fast and squishy car. It's that simple.

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

I can vouch for these guys!  Great group and the car did really well for its first trip to the track.  Few minor issues to work out then it will be a tough car to beat!

Thanks for the opportunity to join you guys this year!

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

JAGVAIR LIVES! For those who came by at the end of the race to witness us thrashing on the JV after some fuel delivery problems and cried "NOOOOOOOO!". Not to worry, last night the JV was revived after some fuel cell disassembly and troubleshooting. Going to AN the fuel system and run an external pump and filter. Also the gravel grinding sound was pinpointed to the alternator. She purrs like a kitten. Just like most racing, anywhere I tried to "do it on the cheap", I paid the price. Don't cheap out on brakes and fuel. Checked over the 22 year old engine, and she didn't use a drop of oil. We bought all this oil thinking that we would have Corvair-like consumption. With the JV up and running again, new goals might include running one of the "Mad Max" CA races at the end of the year. It will be like a vacation, CA worst winter day is better than OR best summer day.

Though getting another Corvair is pretty cool. The guy we bought it from had some other lemony creations, enjoy.

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Here is the newest addition to the Transcontinental stable, but this time it is a Monza! Not sure what the future holds for this one, maybe race it in its 110hp form or build another SPEC JAGVAIR car and run two cars (that is the easy way to run Vegas to Reno and the Baja 1000). I am sure my wife can wrangle three friends to run a second (test) car. Maybe just take out the engine and build an experimental aircraft (new pilot and Corvair power, what could go wrong).

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

For those who hate corvairs, read no further. For those who love them, you might want to stop also. Ha ha! Drove the red corvair, drove the red corvair!

Dropped out the sending unit and tank was awesome! Blew out the lines and new fuel filter and nothing. Circumvented the mechanical pump with and electric and vroom! Tick, tick, tick, the sewing machine sound of a pancake.

Cleaned out the master cylinder and bleed screws. Pushed whatever gunk was in the wheel cylinders out and had some resemblance to brakes. The throttle pedal sticks a little, so you have to use a prybar as a return spring. She flies down the road, way faster the the smoking green giant that we raced in 2014.

Oh, I want to cage her sooooo bad!!!!

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Well, car is coming back together. Trying to run first HOD event in March. So far found that the exhaust is two piece when it is not supposed to be. Broke one whole tube off the collector and there is a huge crack almost all the way around the collector. I cannot imagine we did that at the race, #1 reason to inspect you car after every race. The driver side motor mount pulled apart while pulling the frontend, but I do not that the 20+ year old mount had much strength in it anyway. After the rubber in the rear subframe failed, I tubed the the rear of the car. Pics to follow. Just need to get the brakes replumbed and she should be rolling!

Got to love the Corvairs, Ralph Nadar can chock on one!

I am shooting for either the 2017 or 2018 season, with any luck you all won't be the only Corvair team!

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

During the PNW 2105 race we had a little problem with our rearend. One of the rubber bushings at the front of the rear subframe falied and caused the rearend to sag dramatically to the right. Quickly fabricating a large washer and the car was back on track, though a little squirrelly at the end of the front straight. The rearend felt like it was connected with a Slinky under braking. Oh well, bust out the welder.

https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0Bwd77mMKZxPXVjBFZEZyR2dhMjA

Upper mounts hold the rearend, lower mounts hold the rear suspension. Tube connectors are to get the rear end out (still have to disassemble the rear suspension, will fix that when we go to a Mark VIII rearend).

Under where it says Salisbury, it reads GKN, they make rocket parts. Lower bolts in picture also hold rear suspension, components be structural just like F1!

2006 Hummer H3 shocks fit a 1993 Jaguar XJ6!

Shocks must be Rancho 4" lift shocks.

RS9000XL give you adjustability and 70mm body.

Don't ask me how I know this.

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Sweet!

Looking at Rock Auto those front shocks go back to the first series 1 XJs in 1969.  need to add that to the list of cheaty parts when I start playing with the suspension.

Is that with a stock front spring?  Or have they been cut?  Does it look like it can be lowered without bottoming out the shock?

Re: Corvair Build Thread (Transcontinental Drifters)

Cut two coils out, should have done one. Don't know about bottoming out yet, may need to make an extension for the top of the shock. I built a new upper mount when I put the front end in the Jagvair. I centered the shock in the middle of the upper arm, not sure if that is how stock is. Need to offset the lower mounting to the rear to clear the shock body of the upper arm. If it becomes a pain, may just put Bilstein B6s on.

If by cheaty you mean, heavy, truck based, off road shocks. Probably valved for a 6000# SUV, cheaty it is. I will put KYB stickers on them to throw off the judges.
