What do you have? I used to own an '81 Isuzu I-Mark LS Diesel (Chevette / Opel Kadett C). It was amazing and in perfect condition, wish I hadn't sold it.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

More work on the Opel. I still haven't driven it yet. The package containing my driveline u-bolts was lost by USPS. Second package is coming tomorrow (via UPS this time).

Upgraded the ignition system with a pertronix coil and igniter. Got a wideband installed, and megasquirt set up with coil negative triggering. Need to draw my TBI adapter plate so my friend can CNC one for me. I could do it on my little drill press, but he offered. smile

Already with the wideband I can see that I'm idling lean, and I'm not getting an adequate pump shot (or none) so there is a bog on quick throttle. Pretty handy!

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

Finally got my package from Opel GT Source with new motor mounts and driveline u-bolts. I know my driveline will need serviced, the rear joint is stiff and can't be greased. Opel used a "plastic injection" system instead of conventional clips to locate the u-joint caps, and few driveline shops have the equipment or experience to work on such an odd unit. Gil at Opel GT Source referred me to a driveline shop near Seattle. Specifically Pat at Drivelines NW in Fife WA.

I went ahead and installed my driveline just so I can drive the car around a little bit to say that I did. I'll pull it again to mail it to the shop, and replace my torque tube donut, it is SHOT.

I bought a little drill press and started working on my TBI adapter plate. My friend machined a nice piece of 4 x 4.5 x 0.75" aluminum for me, we might CNC the final adapter plate, but this will get me running. FYI, a wood hole saw does not do a great job drilling through billet, but it eventually punched through. I messed up and drilled my TBI holes to clear an M8x1.25 bolt, not to tap M8x1.25 threads. hmm Thankfully everything is symmetrical except the TBI bolts, so I can just flip the plate over and drill/tap new holes. The ones I drilled oversize will just add lightness.

Drilled and tapped some more correct holes in my adapter plate. Looks like we're in business. Doesn't look like the Iron Duke air cleaner sits any higher than the Weber with a tall cleaner. Should be plenty of hood clearance.

Just a fuel system away from driving this car. I'm going to have a friend TIG an AN-6 bung for a return line into my tank, though I intend to retrofit an EFI tank from some other car eventually.

There is enough to be done that I probably shouldn't bother driving the car in it's current state. Namely the stiff u-joint and destroyed torque tube donut. But I really want to say that it's drivable again.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

The Kadett now runs on EFI. I might take it for a novelty drive, but it needs the drive shaft and torque tube overhauled, and the driveshaft has to go to a specialist, because Opel.

Here is the first start video. The IAC was connected but not enabled, so it was running at whatever position the motor was parked in, hence the 2-3000RPM idle. I have configured the IAC and also reset the req fuel calcs, so it's idling normally and with a sensible AFR now.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

Installed a 9" electric puller fan positioned at the lower left, above the outlet. Water pump pulley is pretty close to the radiator, I couldn't fit my 12" fan between. I didn't have a shroud on the mechanical fan, so I imagine the single 9" fan will have greater cooling effect anyway. I have a 180-degree thermostat installed and the fan temp set at 195-degrees, controlled by Megasquirt. I don't think it will be necessary, but there is room for a couple smaller pusher fans behind the grille.

https://d12hva.by3301.livefilestore.com/y3mCSdDHwBZ5z5NOo_aCypwaZq11vHLm-AnzXx2LpGmv80XsP4a9kQ5cyVKry4sZ6pEadrEFKPorO_s6m9d3VX19zUzpz4VOTixCzD16xcb-XswDjW9zbnessS8lgZ-xTIe4e5cXlxhnlI64YQBuCQUgNMEOoZmtAxgu48H4Krnhl4?width=1024&height=576&cropmode=none

Swapping to an electric fan was medium-high on the priorities because I have a minor but consistent oil leak (something pressurized). I couldn't tell where is was coming from because the fan was blowing the oil droplets everywhere. I believe it is coming from the oil pressure safety switch which I installed for an electric fuel pump for the carburetor. Unnecessary now that I have Megasquirt running the fuel pump. I never ran the engine with that switch installed, so I never noticed an oil leak. I'll delete the brand new mechanical pump while I'm there.

Haven't done any real tuning on the car, I need to read up on the base tuning procedure and workflow. I'm going to be out a few days on some parts, and it's kind of a busy week, so don't expect too much. Might as well get my drive shaft mailed off tomorrow as I won't be driving the car. One of the parts I need to order is a universal throttle cable kit, and I'll need to make some brackets to get that installed. THEN the car should be drivable.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

Still a few things that have held me back from driving the car. That list is getting very short now. I just rebuilt the torque tube with a new carrier bearing and rubbers. Along with a new pinion seal and trans output seal. I still want to get the u-joints replaced, they feel stiff. That will be a $250 job as Opel used nylon injection to retain the ujoints and very few driveline shops are equipped do that. I was referred to a shop in Fife, WA so I'll be mailing the shaft up there.

The engine was getting too hot when I was doing my idle tuning. Turns out my radiator was horribly clogged. I have used a Prestone radiator flush chemical, then flushed the system with fresh tap water from the garden hose. I pulled the rad to back-flush it too, which seemed to do some good. It's sitting with a second prestone flush in clear water now. One more clear water flush and I'll call it good. I have a spare radiator that looks decent just in case.

I'm weeping oil from the valve cover gasket, and unfortunately Fel Pro has recently discontinued the Opel CIH valve cover gasket. Opel GT Source will start producing their own soon, but they don't have them yet. I have an aluminum valve that I'm going to rework for better PCV fittings. The OEM solution is to just jam the hoses in slightly undersized holes. I tapped the smaller hole to 1/4 NPT and the larger one is getting a 3/8 NPT bung welded in.

So today I just need to reinstall the torque tube and change the diff and trans fluids. I should be able to drive the car tomorrow when the weather is a little nicer. I can't drive it in the rain because the cowl vents drain right into the firewall holes, and right onto my exposed Megasquirt board.

Opel GT Source. The Opel GT was based the Kadett B, so almost everything is interchangeable. Yours would be a Kadett C, not sure if they have the same part.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

The driveline shop still has my shaft. I was hoping to have it back before the weekend, maybe next week...

In the meantime, I did the rear suspension bushings. The panhard bar and trailing arm bushings were original, but not that bad. Already had poly replacements that I bought three years ago, so they went in anyway. Rear sway bar bushings were shot (the Kadett came with a rear sway bar but not a front, I'm working on that). I had also ordered poly sway bar bushings, so now those are installed.

My "parts car" is an abandoned Opel GT that I drug home five years ago (literally drug it, one of the brakes was seized). It had vintage Cragars on it, with a much more appealing offset. The 205/60-13 tire size is hard to come by, but I think I need to find some (the good looking tire in this picture is old and rotten). Ebay is the only place I've found any. I might give a wheel shop in Portland a call about refinishing them.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

I've been daily driving the car since the rain stopped (all the rotten window seals and rust holes leak a lot). I've already broke my exhaust in half, the outlet of the scrap-bin resonator I used twisted off. I only had one hanger on the scrap-bin flowmaster knockoff, and I think the weight of that on the bumpy highway was causing the pipe to twist. I replaced that with a new glasspack and ran the same highway route again that broke that last exhaust - about 120 miles round trip (which I usually make weekly). It's not so bad sounding around town, nice and deep and throaty, but the drone on the highway is really getting on my nerves. That flowmaster knockoff has to go. Being replaced with a brand new cheapie Walker SoundFX turbo-style muffler. Reviews say they're quiet. We'll see, I'll be welding it on this evening.

I've been putting hundreds of miles on the car in recent weeks. It's mostly pretty good!

Also, the new Walker muffler is much quieter! Totally worth it.

I wonder if Elana needs any parts off your parts car?  smile

I have a GT parts car too, but I think Elana's car is pretty well sorted, probably doesn't need anything that I have. I suggested that she run her Opel on the Rally too, but I think she is too busy for that. I'll send her the story, maybe I can get my junk in another web or magazine article.

yeah, someone needs to do it. She liked my adventure last year...well, i don't think she liked editing it, but she liked the story.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

My Zip-tie Drags V8 Volvo build and road trip story was pretty long. There were a number of V8 Volvos at the drags, so they were going to do an article on them but ran out of room in the current issue so it's going in the next.

This EFI is so nice. I wish I didn't have the super low compression smog engine. Maybe after the rally I'll build a nice engine for it.

They were more organized, but when I swapped to MPFI some things changed location and messed all my lengths up. Once I get things finalized, I'll redo the wiring and loom it nicely.

Or not.

Even when it's nicely organized, it's still a lot of wires.

Re: Opel Prep for West Coast 2017

Compared to the three wires it had before - yes, yes it is.
