Topic: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

Following Twitter this AM, and it appears that Sonoma Raceway is currently either in the path of the Sonoma fire, or has already been affected by it.

Obviously, this may impact the December 2/3 race. More importantly, I hope all fellow Lemons racers in Napa and Sonoma are safe.

Re: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

The fires are well away from Sonoma Raceway according to the Cal Fire map - https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewe … &z=10. Doesn't help all the people affected, best wishes to them.

The big fire in Sonoma/Napa is 20 miles away from the raceway. The other fires are small ones, closest one is 10 miles away.

Re: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

A statement from Sonoma Raceway: fires on the property, but they are contained and all structures are currently OK.

Re: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

Whoops, my mistake! Thanks for the update. The Cal Fire map doesn't have anything about the fires near the raceway.

Also, the US Forest Service has the fires up there as a lot bigger than the Cal Fire Google Map. The latest USFS map is at http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/2-bi … 262945.php

Re: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

The Cal Fire map appears to currently only be showing the area of origin but not the amount of ground the fires cover.  For instance that fire they show by Kenwood has apparently reached the 101 in Santa Rosa which is a fair distance away.  This morning I saw a massive smoke cloud out my office window from a fire in Anaheim but the Cal Fire map didn't show it for some time.

While the track is upwind from the fire on the hill and fires burn slower downhill, I'd not be super excited seeing that fireline being that close to me.

Re: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

Indeed, the Cal Fire Google Map isn't good.

Here's a much better Google Map image from the SFGate.com website. Couldn't find a URL for it though. Fires are big and converging. A lot of people, homes and businesses affected. That region had this happen a few years ago with the Clear Lake fires.

At least the raceway seems in the clear now - picture below that shows the fire near the raceway pretty well knocked down. Another from today of the raceway itself untouched. The raceway has been smart - hillside mowing sheep and cutting fire roads in advance.

There were unusally strong winds up there last night. Winds have died down today and they should get the wind and rising humidity off the ocean this afternoon, hopefully.

Re: Sonoma Raceway in path of fire

Something to keep in mind: We have a lot of teams and people in that area, so keep them in mind. I'm obviously 2,000 miles away and can only be of limited help, but if you're in the area, help out the Lemons teams and their families if you can. We know the Old Crows—who have been doing this for years and years—lost the house where they stored their two Lemons cars.

Edit: Judge Steve had to evacuate in the middle of the night from Santa Rosa. From the text he sent me, he's fine along with the things he has cached a couple places around Santa Rosa.

I'm way down in Gilroy, but I've got a truck and a trailer.  If anybody needs anything moved and stored, don't hesitate to let me know - bshorey at yahoo dot com, or 978 973 0879.

Fingers crossed for everybody up there.  Pics I've seen of damage in Santa Rosa are brutal.
