Topic: Spares

What are the typical things that break for teams?  We are trying to get a inventory of parts , but don't want to have to bring a second trailer to carry all of them.  What are the essentials?

Tires
Brake pads/rotors
Fluids
Fuses
Clutch
Hoses

Any other common break downs that we should be prepared for?

Re: Spares

you can never have enough of duct tape and zip ties.  consider taking bailing wire as well

Re: Spares

What car do you have? Because that changes things. If you have an 80's turbo dodge, bring a spare drivetrain. If you have a honda that you haven't prepped the cooling system correctly on, bring head gaskets. If you have a 255k mile saab wagon bring nothing but spare computers.

Seriously though, aside from the common fuses, fluids, brakes, tires, it's all car/team dependent.

Re: Spares

We will have a 75 Chevy Luv, so electronics shouldn't be an issue.  Head gaskets sounds like a good idea regardless of make model, thanks.  We will definitely have a surplus of tape, zip ties, wire to stop things from moving that shouldn't and lubricants to get this to move that should be moving.

Re: Spares

A lot also depends on your car and how hard the parts are to get for it.  If your car has any parts that are specific to its model or year that are nearly impossible to find you might want to bring it.  If its a part that you can run to almost any parts store to get a replacement you might not need to haul it with you in the off chance it might break.

Re: Spares

It's not a bad idea to hit Rockauto for all the cheap parts that may be difficult to get from Autozone etc on raceday. Things like tie rod ends, wheel bearings, ball joints, fuel filters etc.
Also coil, distributor, points, rotor etc as well so if you need to start slapping new parts on it to trouble shoot you have them on hand.

Re: Spares

The rule of thumb is to bring whatever you don't want to change at the track. The only stuff that will break on the car is stuff you didn't bring and can't get at an auto parts store.

Re: Spares

Bring a spare radiator cap. Because when you leave yours on top of the shop stereo 800 miles from the track, you will need to tear down to San Rafael in Friday morning rush hour to get one. Can't imagine why I know this smile

Re: Spares

Bearings....wheel, bottom end, whatever.  Tend to be cheap and you likely did not change them.
Anything the interwebs says fails
Filters...all of them...but especially fuel filters
Fluids for every system
Random wire, Alternator, belts\
RTV
Giant bucket of random bolts and nuts...ANY specialty fasteners like brake caliper bolts, flywheel bolts
At least two spare wheels with tires
More beer...yes, you think you have enough...you don't so bring more

Or better yet, tow your car with a parts car.
