Re: Lemons Wish List

I'll be damned if I'm going to sit back and watch some other team get a Mercury Topaz out before I do. I've been searching on and off for over 2 years for a 1984-1985 manual trans Mercury Topaz along with a matching 84-85 manual trans Tempo. When I've found them, the timing has been bad (funerals, blizzards, MRI and CT scans) or the Lemons folks who live closer than I do were unable to help secure them for me.

So consider this a call for help. I NEED a 1984-85 (or even a "rare" 83) gasoline powered Tempo (2-door ideally but 4-door is ok) and a gasoline powered 84-85 Topaz (4-door ideally but 2-door ok) and I need to be able to get them to me in So Cal.

I know where there's a non-running 84 Topaz south of Durango Co north of Farmington.

It seems like Colorado is the place to find the 84-85 Tempos and Topazs. I think they were part of some Native American restitution package or something like that.

I'd prefer NOT to publicize exactly what my plan is for them, but I assure you it is likely that the entire Lemons community will approve and benefit from them. So if you are one of the people who is in on my idea, I ask that you not blab too widely.

This is only a decade off your requirement list, but it comes with the correct Douglas X-tra track tires pre-mounted.

But if you can get to NC, there's a running '84 for you https://greenville.craigslist.org/cto/d … 01123.html

Re: Lemons Wish List

There hasn't been a Topaz/Tempo in Lemons yet?   Where's "Ford Tempo Fanatic", rest his login, when you need him?

Oh, and the Mark 2 has been on my list as a _street car_ since, oh, about 1990, so it was neck-and-neck with a PV544 for 'cars that would make even me think I could get it together well enough to build a car and look like a hero' - whoever runs a Jag-powered Mark 2 is gonna be instant Lemons Royalty, I bet!

(and I actually bet that the Mark 2 could probably be too good to get IoE unless truly terrible - even with speed-creep and all I bet it's a mid-B car in the right hands.)

There has been just the one Tempo that races in the midwest, but there hasn't been a Topaz yet.

Re: Lemons Wish List

It was a 2.3/Auto Tempo and it did way better than it had any right to. At the Easter Weekend race at Gingerman, I think it finished 10th or 11th of 45 cars. It also ran a 1:51 on the old Gingerman layout, which was downright hauling for a car with 90 horsepower when new.

Edit to add: The Auto used in these things was such dogshit that it must have eaten about 20 HP off the showroom floor. I'd be surprised if the silver Tempo dyno'd at more than 60 WHP.

Edited more to add: I've never driven a V6 Tempo/Topaz, but I would think a V6/5-Speed would almost be a Class B car. Almost. There's a Class C loophole you can drive a pushrod V6 through.

Re: Lemons Wish List

I'm going on a limb and saying we're not seeing a Mark 2 Jag anytime soon.

(yes, I'm aware of the Jagvair sequel, that's a mark 1 which is equally Lemony awesome but they have always been cheaper...)

Why the certainty on my part?

I got in a bidding war at an estate auction over one, a 1960,  this weekend. Entire interior jammed with boxes of parts. No distributor or wires. Steering column in trunk. I think there might have been a steering wheel somewhere. Gas station bias ply tires from the 70s. A classic "basket case"...

I HAD to have it, didn't care it was a 3.4 not a 3.8, we were smitten. with auction fees I bid it over $4000 freaking dollars.

Didn't get it done. That one went over $5000 to win. Nobody REALLY starts with a $5000 basket case in Lemons. If you're building a $10,000 $500 car it ought to end up quicker

It was the same blue as the one in the article pic, hence I was moved to comment.

This was a Mark X, but it was for sale for a long, long time around here in about the same state.

We've had our eye on that guy, and while I hate to disclose a trade secret, the likelihood of us every making it happen is fairly low, so here goes in case someone else wants to run with our awesome terrible idea.

Get that Mk 2, install whatever BMW straight 6 w/ manual trans powertrain we can find for cheap at the moment, and call it the Janglo-Saxon (i.e., a German inhabiting Great Britan).

"Car runs but stops and the red light and starts right back up."

Why, I don't even know what that means. Must be something simple as the seller suggests.

Add to that the picture with two claw hammers in the drivers seat equals one of the best CL posts I've seen in some time.

Not really a manual, to judge by the shift lever.

Don't forget the oil pressure (?) gauge tied to the steering column with what looks like a wristband from a stopwatch or something.

Oh wait, that's not a manual shifter. Dang.

Re: Lemons Wish List

Is it really that hard to put a manual from an Escort in one of these?

The tempo is rare for a reason. Might not have enough supply let to be picky about drivetrain...

Hrm, I believe there's one of these Mark Xs in my neighbors yard in SF. The story is that it's a friend of the property owners who never claimed it. Interior was still there IIRC but there was definitely no engine under the hood. To appease the neighbors they finally built up a fence so hauling it out might be a little complicated.
