Topic: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

I'm tempted to do the Great Lakes Rally...it would fit in nicely into my "racing schedule".  Although I would need to fly in from Boston to Chicago (?or Detroit).
I would need someone to help me out to purchase something for me that would be road worthy, since I would not have time to work on it....maybe around $1500....then I would need to figure out how to register and insure it...I would probably drive it back to the east coast, or maybe resell it

I'm thinking BIG, 4 door, Titanic Ship/Land Yacht...from the 60s or 70s...pre oil embargo/odd-even gas station days...with a billiard table size hood that you could play pig-pong on...with pimpin'  leather or crushed velvet seats, soft, cushy-tushy sofa seats...like the big Lincolns or Cadillacs from those days...

Any suggestions?
I should probably start trolling CL..

Too bad you're not in NC. I was looking at a really nice 3rd-gen To0wn Car with some cosmetic damage to the front end today for $800.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

How crazy do you want to go....I am the king of under $1000 cars in the Chicagoland area.  Want reliable but maybe a bit boring (Park Ave, Ranger, Saturn) or wild but officially driveable?

Edit: To pout this in perspective my DD is a $650 Saturn, my project cars are a $1000 1991 560SEL with no rust, a $400 1998 V70 GLT and a Volga.

Edit again...might have an issue getting it to the track if we run two cars at Gingerman but we have the tools to do so just maybe not enough drivers of tow vehicles.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

If none of those cars floats your boat look at this:  https://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/ … 33350.html

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Examples.. this wonderful gentleman has a ton of cars in this price range from mild to wild and he is apparently a giant prick:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/cto/ … 02205.html

Manual, non-turbo, first gen FWD Volvo...safe as houses:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/cto/ … 37360.html

Reliable as they get...can do a coolant system pressure test for the LIM gaskets or just do the both those and the intake for about $250 in parts.

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/cto/ … 21009.html

Could get some points but terrible car:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/cto/ … 62141.html

Oh, and I have a 1996 Jettatnext door that needs a shidter bushing and a mechanic told the owners it has and bad oil pump...but that has never happened in the history of the abab 2.0 so it is one of TWO oil pressure sensors.  Probably $500 on that.  Rusty as hell but replaced a lot of suspension/steering and drive great. with working heat and air!

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Some nice suggestions...Thanks!

What's closer to Gingerman: Detroit or Chicago?  I could fly into either one...

But what I'm thinking, is a road trip with wife, daughter, and maybe an expert Russian mechanic in the back seat to help out along the way...

These are kinda what I had in mind:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/ … 23208.html

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/ … 81866.html

https://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/cto/ … 99061.html

Any thoughts on these options??

I wound likely need to get in touch with someone that is reliable that I could send money to, that would pick up the car for me after taking it for a test drive to make sure it does not blow up when it hits...80mph?...on the freeway...

Probably should purchase by early June...

The no title thing is an issue in both Indiana and Illinois unless you can wash it in another state.  I think Vermont was mentioned.

Depending on the car I have no issue picking it up with my own money and having you pay me when you get here.  I can always resell if you flake but I won't do that on a no title car.

I love the Daf 44! But likely kinda small for me...not sure about the wheel base either....and too far for a Lemons racing build...I don't think I would do the Gingerman race...just the Rally...although really tempting to do both...!
The Coupe Devil ....looks sweet.....more my size..

Thanks for the kind offer....I think I may take you up on it....I'll look at my work schedule and start planning...
I think I would just send you the money (Paypal or check)...say $2k...then pick something out on CL...then maybe you could go check it out, if not far from you...and see if it is in decent condition, and give it a drive...then if you purchase it, what ever money is left over, you could just send it back to me...

No title is no big deal, I think...a couple years ago, I purchased a crashed Prelude for parts with no bill of sale or title....stripped it....but no junk yard would take it without the title...so I went to the DMV/RMV with a "Bill of sale", filled out some forms, gave them the VIN, paid a fee, made up a story....and they sent me a Title...
So I could do the same...There might even be some law that if the car is really old, you don't need a title to register a car in Massachusetts...not sure...
Either way...I could get a title, registration, and insure it...should not be a problem....even it the car is over there...

The 44 has a generously large 88.5" wheelbase. Not a problem.

I tried to do the very first rally in my Volvo 66 GL (essentially a rebadged DAF 66) but encountered technical difficulties on my way to the start and had to switch to my backup plan, an International Harvester 1200D, after missing the first day. I'm hoping to have another go with the 66 for this year's Monterey rally.

Both the US and the British DAF clubs are quite helpful, should you decide to get the 44.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Oh, and just a warning...all the boats I have listed, and most you will find in the Midwest:

a) In parts of town I should not be going (though I do it all the time to get new hoopties)
b) Almost guaranteed to have a rotted brake line about to let go (hard line, not hose)
c) Were washed, waxed, oil changed every 1500 miles and never driven in the rain...until the old man that bought it new as a reward to himself for 25 years in the mills died and his grandson got it.  How much damage said grandson does to it before reselling it is the key.

That last reason is why I try to find Buick LeSabres and Park Ave's when I need a cheap car for someone in need.  I can often find a 1996 with 65K miles and virtually no rust with a stack of oil change receipts.

$2000 is kinda steep, but I can try contacting the seller and get some more info.
Maybe he/she will have a soft spot for Lemons.
Hopefully it is not in a bad neighborhood either....Looks like there is a title to the car...

I looked up the model on Wiki:

In November 1971, a showroom-stock 1971 Coupe de Ville placed third in the annual coast-to-coast Cannonball Run, posting the highest average speed of the event, 84.6 mph (136.2 km/h) (excluding stops) and averaging 8.9 mpg‑US (26 L/100 km; 10.7 mpg‑imp).

As with all GM full-size lines, the DeVille was redesigned for 1971. The new GM full-size bodies, at 64.3 inches front shoulder room (62.1 inches on Cadillac) and 63.4 inches rear shoulder room (64.0 inches on Cadillac) set a record for interior width that would not be matched by any car until the full-size GM rear-wheel-drive models of the early to mid-1990s.

Sorry, month end closing kicked my ass and prepping for the Joliet race will continue to do so.  Follow up after April 15.

That said, boats in Fort Wayne are actually pretty common and two out of three we considered before the buying the '47 Plymouth were much nicer than what we found in Chicagoland.  I have a teammate there as well.

That's the one I would be going for. I love the '66 Pontiac fullsize look. That Catalina seems like a great deal. It would ride like a boat, corner like a wide-track Pontiac should, and have torque for days. They're mechanically simple like any other 60s American car. That thing is s-w-e-e-t.
