What do you think, OnkelUno, dculberson, etc.??

I went to high school with a guy who had a four-door '64 Comet with that engine and transmission. It's a fun car! Speaking from experience, do not attempt to repaint it in an unheated garage with temperatures hovering around freezing.*  Other than that, this is a perfect plan.

*See, I did learn something in high school.

Any thoughts on these options??

That's the one I would be going for. I love the '66 Pontiac fullsize look. That Catalina seems like a great deal. It would ride like a boat, corner like a wide-track Pontiac should, and have torque for days. They're mechanically simple like any other 60s American car. That thing is s-w-e-e-t.

Yes, I like the Pontiac too....looks nicer than the Cadillacs...and looks to be in good condition....

But then I just saw this!

Reached out to my other contacts out here...think there is one really good team out there if not too busy getting ready for Joliet.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Point was validly made, Comet not a boat.  That said, I have a possible that could look at it tomorrow.

the spares involved will pose a long term issue but could be easily stored at my place during the rally if you do not mind a coming back to I65 and I94 intersection in IN to pick them up.  My suggestion would be I acquire a small utility trailer for them OR you arrange an easy coast team to transport the bigger piece back with them from Gingerman.  The axle is the main concern...Engine and tranny we can fit in the boot.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

OK!

Seems like the Comet or the Pontiac Catalina would be the best option.  And probably be easiest to resell...

Pontiac looks super clean...and looks nice.  Although I'm unable to see what the inside looks like.....Hopefully the carb is not in bad shape since owner says it needs some work
Comet looks super also with lots of chrome...with a rebuilt manual tranny!  And spare parts...!

Either way, I would need something that is not completely rusted out and has a floor....and can seat 4 people....so back seat needs to be ok to sit in...not a gutted out back seat area...and, more of less, mechanically sound...drivable, at least to start....

And I'm ok if the car is not a "Boat"....

Spare parts are good to have....I can always arrange to get them here later...

What a tough choice...!

Either way, if someone does not mind too much going to check these out, I would Paypal you the money or send you a check...whichever is best for you....
And either way,  I would plan on coming to the Gingerman race on Sunday, and we would bring lots of beer and food for your team!

If you need to contact me quickly, my cell 774 269 1748 and can text

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

eh, Mr. Cabinboy...which one are you going to look at?  Catalina or Comet?

I showed my wife the cars and she kinda nixed the Comet...so hopefully you meant you are going to see the nice Catalina...

She plans to go on the trip also, with my 10 yr. old daughter, they wanted something more or less comfortable...the Comet looked a bit beat up inside...Although the Comet would make a great Lemons car!
But unfortunately I am not able to currently commit to a new build....I have a hard enough time with one car (being sole owner, captain, benevolent dictator, mechanic, organizer, transporter, etc.)....at least my wife has taken over the role of "Track Mom" and provider of food.

The Catalina looks nice on the outside...so hopefully is just as good inside...

I will send you this in an email also, just in case you made an appointment for the Comet, not to waste anyone's time....

Anyways, hope you meant Catalina...

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Thank you so much for your offer to help...
Good luck everyone with Joliet!

I am going to contact the Catalina guy to get some more info....
Looks like he lives a bit out of the way, in some field in the middle of nowhere...

But so far, I think the Catalina would be first on my list (and has wife approval)

Someone should get the Comet to race in Lemons!

Both Cabinboy and I race old spectacular cars so we will leave that for others to pick up.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Does not get more boat-like than a full-sized Buick...and it is not in the middle of nowhere.

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/ … 26047.html

Edit: And I could get a Ford 302 and AOD if it were not the weekend before the race for less than $1K...there are like 12 of them in Explorers in the PnP right now...1/2 price weekend.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Chicago seems to have all the best cars....!

My mom had a Buick Electra in the early 70s like this one

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/1971_Buick_Electra_225%2C_Seattle_%28front%29.jpg

The LeSabre looks nice too...clean, roomy, and looks like engine was fixed up a bit...

I think I will try for the Catalina first, since it might be easier to resell later...although I realize I am sacrificing some boat-ness....and if it sells, then maybe I'll go for your Buick.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

My dear Catalina was sold....oh well....
It would have required some Lemony creative documentation fudging to get it registered and titled...anyways...

still plenty of time

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

Love the suggestions!

But I get kinda claustraphobic in the back of 2 door cars...

The big Deville has been listed for a while...not really selling...I wonder why...but it would be classy....I'll check with the wifey...

And the camper looks fantastic....it would be cool to do the race in an old camper...

But for "Boats", this would be great...but also out of price range:

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

or what do we think about this?:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/ … 26047.html

More points for 1960s...

Although seems like the engine is not original and other stuff rebuild and modified..., so I wonder if the rebuild would last the rally and was done well....?

Seems nice and roomy and clean....and my daughter would love the roll up windows...

That is officially more beige than 2002 Camry in champagne.  I am not sure one could be more beige.

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

That went fast...
It seemed like a super nice deal too....
Reminded me of the 1977 Delta 88 that my Mom gave me, that  I drove cross country to go to school in Philadelphia...

Chicago has such a nice selection of old cars..

Right now I'm thinking either
1966 Buick LeSabre
1972 Cadillac Deville
1964 Mercury Comet (I'm not sure I could convince the wifey though....) (seems small for 4 people, 5 days)

In terms of comfort (for 4 people) for the 5 day trip, reselling, dependability, and awesomeness....

Re: WANTED: Boat for Great Lakes

I found this:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/ … 59450.html

I contacted the seller, since add says: Runs and drives strong, but needs new fuel line.

I asked what was wrong specifically.
Response:  Because it is missing a big section of the line.  I ran it off a gas tank.

But if he ran a fuel line off another gas tank, I assume fuel pump may not work and may need a new gas tank???  And thus does not "drives" strong...since how can you drive it if you run the fuel from a separate gas tank....?

Does this sound fishy to others?
I would need something that literally "runs and drives" when I arrive/fly in  to pick it up in Chicago for the Rally...since I would not have much time to work on it and I would not have tools with me...
