It runs and drives, looks like we might actually make the race in 2 weeks.  Exhaust sounds cool.

This is spectacular. So excited for you guys

Re: V8 Miata - The Lemony way

Well, turns out this is a pretty decent motor.  Ended up 4th overall and 1st in C class with the fastest lap of the weekend by 3 seconds.  Sure was fun.  As Phil said at the awards ceremony, this is proof that the HT4100 series motor is the best pushrod engine to ever come out of Detroit.

Re: V8 Miata - The Lemony way

Bad camera angle, but here's some in-car footage from early in the second day.  The motor is just barely trying and we're running under 2:20 laps on average, I think that's probably why it lasted all weekend.  We kind of just idled around the track all day.  Fastest time of the weekend for us was a 2:12.9.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZt0_43 … e=youtu.be

We went into the weekend expecting to wrench a lot and hoping to get all of us in the seat at least once.  We had no strategy for trying to win, just to go out and have fun.  It was as surprising to us as it was to everyone else that it actually lasted the race.  We had tons of fun!!!

2 questions:

Do you have any pictures of your painting?
And any clips of hitting the curbing at speed around 1-2pm on Sunday?

It was fun running flags for the race.

Re: V8 Miata - The Lemony way

Proof that you don't need a short shifter kit to go fast.

Re: V8 Miata - The Lemony way

So to give a little update, we shredded the rear wheel bearing in the last few laps of the race at high plains last month.  Somehow, it kept moving for the last few laps and we were even able to drive it onto the trailer.  The hub sheared in half and the splines on the cv shaft were stripped, so there was some extreme heat in there from the looks of it.  We measured the CV shaft stud at 750 degrees when it came off the track after the checkered flag.  The brake rotors were only at 300.  Carnage pics:

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/837/42752184134_4db0eca82a_b.jpg

We had to replace basically everything on the outside due to all the heat damage, but we got it all replaced in time to hit the drag strips with a bunch of other Lemons people at Bandimere.  It was nice and slow at the drag strip with the 3.08 gears and truck transmission, but it was still tons of fun getting out there.  The transmission now sounds like its full of rocks, so its time for another junkyard transmission.

Now, in an effort for more free power, because obviously that makes everything better, we've spent about 80 hours porting the iron heads to put on this 4.9.  We've never ported heads before, but like the headers, the internet has plenty of information out there.  The combustion chambers were re-shaped, the intakes were cleaned up, and the exhaust ports were opened up a ton.  This is probably one of the most extreme port jobs on a 4.9 (of which like maybe 5 fiero guys have done ever), so we'll see how much of a difference it makes.  We even melted down some old pistons with a torch to fill in the egr ports on the middle cylinders with aluminum.  To wrap it up, we did a 3 angle valve job using an old snap-on valve seat grinder from the 60's.

Re: V8 Miata - The Lemony way

nice work...cam upgrade next? How do you get it to run right with 2 left sided heads?

"get up and get your grandma outta here"

Re: V8 Miata - The Lemony way

Ha, yea, all the heads on these motors are the same left and right, no idea what the "L" was supposed to stand for.

No one makes cams for these motors, and cams cost money.  Supposedly you can regrind the stock cams, but that also costs money.  So far I have $0 in the porting, which is good for the Lemons budget and the actual budget.

The exhaust ports on these heads were TINY, and the valves were heavily shrouded with lots of sharp edges right next to them, so I think this porting work should make some kind of difference, if not just in making the motor more efficient.

If you're looking for a regrind of the stock cams, I can personally recommend Schneider here in San Diego.
