Interesting.  Our Plymford's chassis is from a 1975 LTD Landau, and it uses a fairly straightforward steering box pitman arm arrangement.  Two hydraulic lines go to the box; we simply kept some fluid in the lines and looped them to depower the box.  It has a small amount of on-center play, but it's not terrifying....at least, no more terrifying than anything else going on at 100 mph in that car.  And actually less terrifying than it was when powered and having all the feedback of a Pole Position video game.
