Topic: Our 1st Lemons attempt, MSR 18, and my cars failure to appear....

Asked in another thread...

The Engineer- -We demand more details. How did the car do? any major issues? Why did race monitor show you in class A with a daytona?

Here is my story, with pictures, might as well tell it all. Maybe some other idiot who wants to make bad financial decisions will learn something....

So after watching 2017 MSR race, I had a clue about what Lemons racing really was. I roped in a few friends and we went searching for the perfect Lemons car. I found a 1985 Dodge Daytona Turbo, terrible gold color, hiding in a garage about 6miles from me. After talking to the owner who had abandoned all hope and let the car sit for the last 5 years, I hauled this masterpiece of American engineering home for $300 dollars. Work began in earnest, full tear down and sell off of every non essential piece. Amazing, these cars have a following, just not in Texas, or really anywhere S of the rust belt. So, I paid to ship stuff to the great white north and other stoopid cold places where the people talk funny. A few months of part out and we had a free car and a full $500 budget to work with, plus 9month to get the car prepped for MSR 18. Easy, no problem...it will be fun....

The car...

Goodies that came with the car...Nice Eibach springs in that pile...
https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/46131334_523418128163339_4971953080716230656_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=fa0f5aff32f394e2b3347520db8e1317&oe=5C809BAD

All laid out...
https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/46137504_523418531496632_1298732040828485632_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=26a3afb7adc3dbd741c263d0af60a6db&oe=5C73940E

And shortly after that the suckiness started.....

Roll cage #1
-A local dirt track shop (I know, mistake) in mesquite had a guy who welded a cage up for me for $400.00. Took about 4months though....
https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/46115142_523418728163279_3135720850754371584_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=be4e168ee8c6beb5d5cb0b3f9a21f564&oe=5C85AB4A

I decided to cut the first cage out, it was hrew thin steel and not even fully welded at almost all the joints, just a train wreck.
So back to square one. Talked to the Lemons staff and Roll Cage Components was the answer. Cage kit built and shipped, then installed here in Sachse by a local hot rod shop. Cage # 2 is beautiful race car worthy cage. Sachse Rod Shop did excellent work fitting the cage to the car over a few weeks and even made constant suggestions and advice on improving the car. Very top notch, professional, hot rod fabricators and all around great guys.

The cars foundation is finnaly going in the right direction.... excitement grows.

Meanwhile in another team members garage....
https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/32503791_387916768380143_1968036276535820288_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=074b158a8cc9806e0616e693769a4e84&oe=5C72895F

So, back up here a min...the car ran prior to tear down, it just blew smoke out the dipstick tube like a freight train...so, time for rings right? likely problem with age/how long the car has sat. With the head off, we noticed the pistons looked funny....like NA pistons, not Turbo pistons...so further tear down required...

Head seems ok....

More disassembly and we learn it has spindly little non turbo CR also...hmm, this wont do well...We havent spend any money yet, so time for the correct rotating assembly, new bearings and seals. Our engine builder happens to be the local Daytona Shelby owners club president and we start shopping. Found a set of used turbo correct pistons and turbo correct CRs and stayed in budget. I have a big ol parts washer at my shop, so after a bath...

By this time it is nearing 4mo to race week. We have been working on the car in our days off/spare time from work/life/everything else. Plenty of time to finish the car, get it running, sort out the bugs, then have fun!

Or so I though....

*Shudder*...  another K-cousin.  ;-)

Bad flashbacks aside, one of the best handling improvements I made on my old P-body (Sundance) was raising the roll center. You can't really lower these cars much before getting into some really undesirable control arm angles.

Good luck!

Hold on, are you implying the car never even made it to the track? I don't want that to be the case. I had such high hopes for another daytona team.

Re: Our 1st Lemons attempt, MSR 18, and my cars failure to appear....

Ok, so 4 or so months prior to race day....

I have a shell with a roll cage on jack stands. No problem...plenty of time....

Life goes by, work, kids, family, team implodes a time or 2 and people leave...keeping a team together is absolutely one of the hardest parts of doing this. By the time the race rolled around, only one person who joined at the beginning of the year was still on the team with me.

That guys is John Spicer, who saved our butts and allowed us to be at the race and have fun.

Anyways, car....yeah, so I traded a guy with a totaled 90 shadow and a rear ended Daytona the unbent rear axle from my Daytona for the undamaged disk brake rear end from his shadow. Spicer figured out that 90 Caravan front calipers and brackets will fit our cars front knuckles and after a few weekends we had a junkyard swap bigger front brake and rear disk brakes. Cool!

New brake soft lines lines, an adapter or two, and we have a functioning brake system, at least on jack stands....

More life/work/bad weather/ and we are 4weeks out. time to put the powertrain back in...

Had some professional help from my little one...
https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/42622706_489541724884313_6133125127304380416_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=1808b3382dd23183b18fc851a2316c84&oe=5C8838CA

Almost a year later.... the car comes back together...

https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/44028863_498007730704379_4802139007364366336_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=6f260ec6600531d287f1d90dc7ac4ee1&oe=5C63A081

Over the next 3 weeks I spent almost every day trying to get the car to run longer than 2 min. She would fire on starting fluid, run a few seconds and die. Pumped out all the bad gas, fresh gas, new plugs, timing checked, same problems. Started fixing vacuum leaks and even built my own vacuum block....now it will fire most of the time and run until I turn it off....but then it wont re fire, just spin over and sputter....

So 10 days out from the race, John Spicer offered the team the use of his 2005 Spec Miata he was building. We begged the judges, I explained my plight....car passes tech, it can race.  I threw together some last min decals to turn the Miata into a Dodge Daytona, at least as much as I could....Had several people very curious about what was under the hood due to the stickers....that was kinda fun...

https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/46351755_524263651412120_430561327438626816_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=4ed3d55a71649812fa77dd335caa9425&oe=5C6F8948

Not the best start to our Friday morning....but car was ok...We pitted in between the Tetanus Racing conglomerate and the Squirrel Killers.

https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/46274991_524263701412115_1407341515952357376_n.jpg?_nc_cat=102&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=a251306d7f191c7c6edcb2c0a7777209&oe=5C70D1C5

So, we got to race, the judges put us in class A and docked us 28 penalty laps in our cheaty spec Miata. The team had a good time, got a few penalties/black flags but other wise the weekend for the team was great.  I had the flu and other than the 30min I ran in practice friday, I was laid up at my parents house in pearland being sick. So life goes...I'll be back, hard at work on getting my actual Daytona running consistently and in one piece. Hopefully I can make the NOLA race and MSR this upcoming season.

Thanks for an awesome event and the chance to make a lifelong dream come true...eventually....Lemons is awesome, the people are fun, and the racing is great. See yall in the paddocks soon!

Re: Our 1st Lemons attempt, MSR 18, and my cars failure to appear....

Man, that sucks you didn't get the car together. I was rooting for you.

Trying to think what might be preventing the restart. Is the car throwing any codes other than the "you unplugged the battery recently so the ECU is mad" code? Are the plugs, wires, and coil new? Are the injectors old and junky? Good solid grounds everywhere?

I don't think that car needs a lot to start. Only position sensor is the one in the distributor. Does your distributor have two plugs coming off of it or one? The hall effect in there is known to go bad and give you hell, potentially it's on it's way out and gives up when it gets warm? I'm guessing you have it timed correctly.

On a more fun note, if you want to adopt our old livery I can send you the dxf files for the stickers we used.

Hey, I know the folks in that camper behind you!  One of them was me!  LOL

Glad you were able to get a car on to the track at least, for many, that's more than half the battle.

Glad you got to race, and that we weren't the only team that got it's butt kicked by that weather. We had a similar experience, except we ended up working all day friday to get to tech at 430.
