Topic: Mini Van or SUV Cage help

So, we are looking at our Disco 1, and thinking how do we pass tech for the cage on this thing.  I wanted to get an idea of how people who have run SUV or mini-van did the rear supporting posts in the car, and it passed muster.   We luckily have a welder on our team, so chopping and cutting should be easy.   Thanks!!!  Looking forward to BMS in Feb!

Re: Mini Van or SUV Cage help

Have you guys gotten a weight waiver from HQ for that thing?

A Disco I seems awfully heavy and roll over prone.

A race car exists only in two states: broken or in the process of becoming that way.

Good call. A Land Rover Discovery Series I is over the 4200 pound limit.

Please note, thebeedubya, that the rules refer to the "vehicle’s original, manufacturer-stated curb weight" so it doesn't matter that you're probably planning to make it lighter by removing a bunch of stuff. If the original weight is over 4200 pounds, you need a waiver and it is very much worth asking before spending any time or money on the project. As I have learned from personal experience, HQ sometimes does say no on weight waivers even if it's only for a couple hundred original pounds that would have been removed during the build anyway.

Re: Mini Van or SUV Cage help

Caging the Dustbuster was straight forward except that we wanted to keep the aweful 90's dash, center console and whole climate control system intact.  This causes a tight fit between the steering wheel and the (insanely long) from down bars.

We just did the measurements and sent them to Roll Cage Components for a pre-bant kit.  Still racing it today with no negative comments from tech on the cage...ever.

Will second the comment about getting the waiver...our van was 3600#'s for a base model (ours was likely about 3800-3900#) and it is made of plastic.  Google says a 1996 Disco is 4500#'s and that is the lightest I saw with minimal research.

Congratulations on the waiver! Lemons always needs more British vehicles.
