Topic: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

Off-kilter:
[awf-kil-ter]
Adjective
1.    Not exactly straight or balanced; askew; uneven.
2.    Not completely well; somewhat ill.
3.    Unusual or eccentric; unconventional.

The perfect team name for a group of Lemons racers building a ’62 Plymouth Valiant 4 door with the “Leaning Tower of Power” Slant 6 engine and a three on the tree.

The car is located in Elizabethtown, KY (near Louisville) with 3-4 team members in the surrounding area and others as far away as VA, NC and GA.

We plan to race at places like Barber, Autobahn, CMP, Ginger Man and Road Atlanta. We’ll keep it street legal and registered so we can do some Lemons rallies and team members can drive it to shows, cruises and local races.

The first order of business is to get it running so we can determine the condition of the drivetrain, followed by brakes and a cage. Then the other 1,769,328 things to get it ready to race!

Slant On!!

No first step is cage it. Then you have to get it running because everyone has money tied up in it.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

We've done some wiring, maintenance, suspension removal, weight reduction, welding... Still haven't started it or welded in a cage yet... That's pretty Lemony... ;-)

Most of the Off-Kilter teammates will be at Barber racing a couple other Slant 6 A Bodies.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

There are a lot of things you can do to upgrade the /6. That said I'd work on the suspension/brakes 1st. I'd upgrade to late A-body manual discs. I'd also upgrade your rear leafs, either upgrade to XHD or have your old springs re-arched. Buy the best shocks you can afford. That car will be light when you get all the weight out. Gut the doors, hood and truck into "skins" One you have the cage in start cutting some more out.  The hard part will be finding a good wheel tire combo. Since you have the small bolt pattern. I'd also change that and get a set of 16" Mustang/Thunderbird rims...  Good luck, I can't see the pix... sad

Hey Mr. Yuck!

The majority of the team members have the Slanted Sickness and drive/race other A bodies, so we are in good hands there.

We are upgrading to later A body disc brakes and a LBP (Large Bolt Pattern = 5 X 4.5) 7 1/4 rear differential. That opens up wheel choices considerably.

We also have a pair of larger torsion bars and extra leaves to add to the rear. Nothing fancy. Just tried and true basics.

See if you can find an 8.25 w/ sure-grip. Or maybe step up to a Dakota rear w/ LSD. You'd have to cut the tubes and axles. Nothing wrong with the hillside hemi... leaning tower of power. Plus people give them away.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

We’ve made some more progress on “Toadracer”.

Upgraded leaf springs are hung along with later A body disc brakes up front.

Adam (Pig Pen) has gone through and traced wires and tacked in sub frame connectors. He will be starting on the cage next.

Corbeau FX1 seat and collapsible steering column are on the way.

Looking at fuel cell options. Considering a larger RCI cell to cut costs.

Hoping to potentially make it to Fall CMP.

We got a cool gift for Toadracer from a fellow Slant Sixer that daily drives a 62 Valiant wagon out in California he calls “El Toad”.

The Slanted Family is pretty tight.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

Momentum on this project slowed for awhile as I moved yet again, etc. etc....

We got back to work on it this weekend finally. Pig Pen got the main roll bar bent and ready for trimming and tacking.

I'm thinking we should weld it in kinda leaned back like that. It gives it a cool rake when you're cruisin' the pits...

Not sure you can lean it that far back and be cool with tech inspection. I'd send pics to John before you weld it in. (pagel at 24hoursoflemons dot com)

Good to see progress! Do you have a first race in mind? Next race for Turbo Dart is NOLA in March (alongside our Soviet rivals, I think). No Barber this year, unfortunately.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

I was kidding about the roll bar.

Sorry we will miss you at Barber. The IOE team will be there in the Signet to cash in our free entry.
Lou will step in for Brian who can’t make it.

ToadRacer plans didn’t work out for 2019, so I won’t predict for 2020. At least we are working on it again.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

Yeah,... Pig Pen was doin' real good there fer a spell. He had a good, solid 6 point roll cage all tacked in when we called it a night last night...

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

We had a blast at Barber running Jason’s ‘64 Valiant Signet again.

Motivation is high among the Off-Kilter Racing guys building ToadRacer!

Adam (Pig Pen) got up Monday morning and just HAD to do something, so he welded in the steering column mount.

Re: Off-Kilter Racing - '62 Valiant Slant 6 in Kentucky

It's been awhile and 2020 has sucked, but Pig Pen finished the cage many months ago.

I've moved a couple more times and moved ToadRacer to a bigger garage.

We are hoping to finally get back to work on it with a goal of some shakedown drives by 11 April (1 month before Sebring)

Lofty goals for 2021: Sebring, NCM, RA...

I pulled the Slant 6 and 3 speed. We plan to just run an automatic while we get the car sorted out. I also scraped another 22 lbs of undercoating. There is still more lightness to be added...

undercoating on these old rides is NO JOKE. good luck.  Make sure you keep the trans cool. I'd suggest using an air conditioning condenser, that is what we did w/ our 700r4 before we went with a 5 speed. LOVE them Mopars.

Oh and gut the hood and deck lid, another 40lbs there.
