Topic: Cage mount

Hi everyone

Couple of cage mounting point questions:

The 24 sq in rule - that doesn't have to be all on one plane, right? The "how not to fail tech" pics suggest the plate can be in multiple planes (i.e. folded over), but it ain't spelled out.

Also does the 24 sq in have to be entirely in contact with floor/sill/whatever? (I know all the edges have to be 100% welded.)

So, would this card mock-up box for front leg pass tech? (See images) TOTAL it's plenty over 24 sq in, but ain't 24 sq in contacting sill/floor.

Thanks again for help, Lemony People.

All the best

Re: Cage mount

What you’re talking about is a plinth box. Default answer is “ask Pagel”.  There are plenty of topics on this if you search. Plinth boxes are ok, but you still need spreader plate under them.

Re: Cage mount

Yes, you have plenty of square inches there.  That's a big plinth box.  Mr Pagel will likely want to see you have that plinth box landing on a spreader plate rather than straight to the floor.

"pagel at [this website's domain name]" is the email address you're looking for.

My understanding is that boxes like you have mocked up need to have a solid bottom, otherwise they can cookie-cutter right through the floor.

Re: Cage mount

If you weld a spreader plate to the floor/sill first, yes that will pass. But you need the spreader plate, having the box land with it's edges directly on the floor will be a fail. Yes the area can be over more than one plane, both the floor and sill.

Re: Cage mount

Actually, the way to make that work  is to angle vertical plate back toward the sill and weld it there, that way the load is to the sill and not the weak floor.  That's how I do it.    What you have there would work with a spreader plate under the vertical part, as others have said

Re: Cage mount

Also, you must use high-strength cardboard, not crappy import stuff....

Actually, I do use chip board rather than cardboard for templates, it folds and cuts easier...

Geez, give yourself a break.

There are no stupid questions.

If you need information, and you don't _have_ that information, the "stupid" question is the one which ISN'T asked.

In fewer than 10 posts, this thread covers some important information regarding: plinth boxes, spreader plates, frame support tie-in, and floor punch through, WITH PICTURES! Nicely efficient...

There can certainly be 'frivolous' questions. Questions as a straight-line set-up for a comedy bit. Questions to annoy and irritate. Questions to 'uncover' certain things one might want to keep hidden. And other types of questions.

But there are no "stupid" questions.

Specifically _reinforced_ for me is the idea of the frame rail tie-in, and how to accomplish it. This is a good reminder - and I thank you!

Re: Cage mount

This, ask away. email me, ask on the forums.  Nothing is worse than showing up to tech and running into a pile of corrections and incurring the ire of the tech guy... He's an ass.

Because I didn't see it covered, I will give a quick "Why" as the use of plinths.

Basically, the plinth allows you to run the hoops a bit shorter so you can weld the tops of the joints easier.
It eliminates, for the most part, the need to cut holes in the floor or roof, or remove the glass.
Weld in spreader plates. Fab plinths, install cage parts and weld. Position cage in final location.
Lift cage and slide plinths underneath. Weld plinths to spreader plates and cage to plinths.

One suggestion to ease welding installation is to build the main hoop for a back seat position,
as the floor is usually higher than the front floor pan.

Re: Cage mount

There's a lot of reasons, mostly the irregularity of the surface at the front points. It's better to have a perpendicular cut on the tube and a plinth box to fill in the weird shape than try and cut the tube to match the weird shape and/or bring the cage way inboard to land on a flat spot.
