Topic: New guy in Atlanta area wanting to help build a car

Hey all,

I'm an engineer in the Atlanta area (half an hour north of Midtown) with little motorsports experience, but I want to try this out.  I spent a year on the Formula SAE team in college, have 4-5 years hobby machining experience (and a lathe at home), and do a lot of loads analysis and software development for work.

Does anyone have any pointers on where I can find teams that could use an extra wrench?

(I do like driving, but I'm more interesting in building than driving.)

Thanks

There’s a lot to be said for not having to engineer everything by committee. You want to build a race car... do it. Visit a race or two to check out the scene in person, pick a make/model you are comfortable with, find one, get to work. Worry about teammates and splitting costs later. I solo built a “race car” and I love it, and I’ve learned a ton along the way, and I don’t have to ask permission about anything (related to the car).  If you are a project guy, you’ll have a blast.

Well, being an engineer means you have to find a team that needs a token engineer or is made up of all engineers (sarcasm but a kernel of truth).

I found all my team members right here on the forums but the forums have been fading out slowly.  My team has cycled a large number of newbies through and currently can campaign two cars at any time with one made up entirely of newbies.  TryTeams looking for Drivers  or Drivers looking for Teams and post on the threads for individual races "Who is coming and what you bringing" offering to be a crew member to any race you want to go to.  This is how I got started.

In the end you can always just go to a race, especially Friday during test and tune, walk around and meet teams.  One of them will be short team members or know who is.

Great, thanks for the tips.

I considered building a car myself, but I don't want to make a big time/money/garage space commitment right off the bat.

I'll look at those two sections. Just attending a race first sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for the links, Steve.  I'll check those out.

Hey Stefan.  Sorry, I've been busy and couldn't get back on here to read these messages, so I missed that race.  I got your message though, so I'll reply to you there.
