looks great. FYI you can order Furd 9" housings in any configuration for about for about $400

I like the idea of welding on my own ends after I get all the brackets on.  To really weld all the brackets on and have them strong I have to put a lot of heat into the tubes, and this way I know when I weld on the ends everything will be nice and straight.  Not having it all in line can add to pedal knockback and I had it really bad the last race where it was downright scary.  I was basically tapping the brake the whole time while going around the track to avoid a soft pedal....don't want to do that ever again.

you do great work. Kick ass car.

Good thing I took the third member apart to use it as a fixture...found this little GEM just waiting to come off during mid race.

That was really really hard getting the ends welded on while keeping the straight bar being able to rotate.  Took me 3 tries and the welds look like poop..oh well...

Don't know if I'll be doing that again ever.

Re: I bought a Rolls Royce and want to build it.

OK guys, I had to completely re-do the watts link brackets on the axle housing.  I had them mounted outboard the springs and didn't realize the passenger side was about 1/4" away from the wheel when I installed it.  It was too close to comfort so I cut them off and started all over.  It ended up turning out way better, and really cool.

I wanted to make sure the bolts for the watts link arms were a through bolt and nut instead of a threaded tube insert like I had before.  There is a lot of lateral leverage on those threads and I had issues twice where the threads got marred. It took me 3 days of working to put 2 brackets together that would work.

So...possibly the coolest part of the car.  I had a couple old forklift forks laying around and decided to do some straight up ghetto junkyard DIY.

I have no idea how to use a mill.

I can comfortably say The Baron now has the strongest billet high carbon hardened drivers side axle mount ever made in the world.

I did machine it with a flat end close to the nut so you don't need a wrench to tighten it either.

Re: I bought a Rolls Royce and want to build it.

I know you just cut a bunch of holes in the shroud, but they make these cheap 1 way flaps for that purpose. At low speeds they suck closed so the shroud is sealed and the fan only pulls through the radiator. at high speed when forced air is more than the fan they open to vent more air.

I'm going to be adding some to my custom shroud this summer.

Looking at the fork material, it doesn't look like you preheated the steel.
There might be bad cracking issues in the weld HAZ from the fork material cooling too quickly.

I've welded on fork material before and haven't had any issues I can remember.  However, I have no idea what i'm doing so I'll keep an eye on it.  Thanks!

Re: I bought a Rolls Royce and want to build it.

I can say today of all thing reminded me why you have to loose your looks-cool giant wheels.  On our race cars we have always run the smallest possible to clear brakes and I knew why...but it hit home today.  I had to put summer wheel and tires on my HHR SS because I took out a 3-season tire (as in Fall, Winter Spring).  16" steelies with performance 4-season rubber verses 18" alloy wheels with HIGH performance summer tires...weight difference was 36# to 49#.  That is a performance killer for acceleration and braking.

Still find your whole build awesome and loved seeing on the track (briefly) with our '47 Plymouth trying to chase it.

Re: I bought a Rolls Royce and want to build it.

Finally welded the mounts for the passenger seat.

I probably test fit close to 20 different sets of wheels and tires we had at the shop.  It seems the best larger wheel diameter tire size was 275/35/19...so I had to find something in a 19" with an offset that would roughtly work with the car.  Turns out BMW has the same bolt pattern as the corvette, and the M3 wheel offset's were pretty close.  The rear were 19x10 and fronts are 19x9.  I am using 1" adapters to get the spacing perfect.  Couldn't get the Mishimoto ZX tires, so had to settle for the direzza.

Seeing it sat down off the lift, I like those a lot more than the first set of wheels you used.

Anybody know how much travel a rear suspension should have?

Re: I bought a Rolls Royce and want to build it.

It depends strongly on what your goals are. Here, I'd guess 2-4 inches with appropriate springs and shocks.

Baja trucks can have up to four feet of travel.

For whatever that's worth.

My first thought seeing the finished product was "them rears are gonna rub". Normally I think box flares make everything better, but probably not on the Rolls.

If you're keeping that stance you should either stiffen the hell out of the springs/sways/shocks or get aggressive with the bump stops.

Re: I bought a Rolls Royce and want to build it.

I can't fit the springs in the rear due to the lack of space.I previously had them mounted at a 65* angle, but want to get them so they are vertical.

Does anybody know anything about motion ratio's?  I'm going to try and mount the coilovers in the trunk and need to make a bell crank pivot arm thing to connect the axle to the coilover.  I can make the motion ratio whatever I want...but have no idea if one way is better than the other.

Is it better to have the wheel rate move the same as the spring compression rate?

Is it better to have the wheel rate move more than the spring compression rate?

Is it better to have the wheel rate move less than the spring compression rate?

Spanks!
