The B20 isn't really the bad part--it needs an alternator, a steering leak needs fixing, the transmission "sticks" in park (so I park it in neutral), rear brake shoes are shot, and it smoked a lot the past few times I ran it (after sitting for months).  A lot of structural rust.   290k miles.  It's one of those things where I could revive it enough to make it roadworthy.

I still don't have Earl Burner running yet. Typical day in the driveway yesterday--an hour job took all afternoon.  But the AC compressor is replaced, and an initial vacuum test shows it's not leaking.  The head's finally going back on today.  And hopefully the rest will go smoothly.

Re: Unofficial Rust Belt Ramble Chat

As of right now, 36 entrants with probably a couple onsite/late registrations. Call it 38-40 when we hit the road Friday morning.

I'm so stoked. A really good friend of mine saw my "Warning Shot" to everyone on facebook and instagram that they are going to see an influx of seemingly random selfies.  Asked what I was doing and decided to join in on the fun!  I now have a Co-Pilot.  Anyone know how I go about making it Lemons official? Do I just send him an invite to join the team from the event spot on my account?

Reg is closed and I emailed you, but you can add people on Friday. We just need them to fill out a late-reg form so we have their emergency contact info.

ALSO: There are only about 10 spots left on the DBC Tour, so get yours before they're gone.

We are already registered and ready to go!

THANK YOU!

I'm only needing to go through the car and make small tweaks now that there are gonna be 2 of us BIG Guys in a TINY car!  LOL   I feel pretty lucky honestly.  had to go out, unbolt a seat and manually move it to the farthest "Scootched back" position!

I was this close to being ready!

But...the Earl Burner Civic will not be making the rally.  One of the threaded holes in the aluminum block is stripped (makes no sense--the bolts all came out cleanly), and I won't trust a Heli-coil to hold 50 ft lbs. I needed it running today; I can't get a M10x1.25 Time-Sert brought in quickly enough to fix it tomorrow morning and even there, I would have to get a special kit for head bolts since the threads are set into the block vs. being flush with the top (like it was with the timing belt tensioner bolt).

The hillbilly fix is to drill and tap to the next size (M12x1.25), but that's no guarantee it will fit the cylinder head or the head gasket for that matter.

I needed it running today, as tomorrow was going to be a ball joint replacment and a test run of all the work (up the "thumb" and back).  Wednesday was set for theming and Thursday I'm tied up with work all day, plus getting everything packed.

So I scratch and lose the entry fee...or bring the daily driver, which I DO NOT want to do.

Wow! That's quite a few more than the Rocky Mountain Breakdown (which was 20-ish?).

The Civic has a D-series engine (D17A1, to be exact). An engine replacement isn't too difficult, but could I trust a junkyard replacement would be any better? Good thing I stopped working on it though--on further inspection the "rebuilt" head doesn't seem to be all that it was cracked up to be.

We need it back on the road, rally or not.

Since I have to work 12+ hours these next two days to partially make up for the (now wasted) days I took off to do "rush" work on the Civic, I either take the daily driver or I scratch. Can't transfer my funds to a future rally, so that would be lost. But at least I won't have to pay for the hotel$ or the ga$.

Re: Unofficial Rust Belt Ramble Chat

It would appear...it was the fuel pump that failed

Anyone interested in a slightly used 1989 Ford escort?

Re: Unofficial Rust Belt Ramble Chat

Despite learning to drive a manual in a 1981 Escort wagon and same year EXP (dad's rental cars after he smashed the crap can '79 Newport), I think I'll let that one remain in the nostalgic memory banks.

Dang it, now I want an EXP.

Is anyone from the RBR planning on attending the Detroit Concours d'Lemons? (Sept. 17, 9am to 1pm.)  I will most likely go as a spectator, but don't know if either of my two old hoopties are worthy of such an exclusive event--perhaps I can push the rustbucket CR-V all the way down Woodward to the parking lot?  The entry fee is cheap enough, though--$15 per hooptie. Bribes extra.

I don't know if spectators get in free, or if there's a charge?  It looks as though it's held in the parking lots of Comerica Field.  There are also RADwood and featured car clubs at the same event.

Re: Unofficial Rust Belt Ramble Chat

Sold the escort today....shit...now I need to find something weird to take back up on the 17th!

Re: Unofficial Rust Belt Ramble Chat

If you hitch a ride up here, legend has it that there is an old CR-V in my driveway and (if we have to) we'll push it down Gratiot Ave. to the Concours.  big_smile  I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, and the title needs to be sorted (long story).
