Topic: How's this Petty bar looking

Looking at a race ready car, the rest of the cage seems OK from the pictures, but I question this petty bar.

Technically good to go as is (but not a great choice)? Cut it out and all is well? Run away and find another car?

Thanks all!

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

I would pass on that one, but not because of the petty bar. The main hoop looks to be mounted to the floor inboard of the door sills.

I also dislike the non standard decision to tie the diagonal to that vertical surface.

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Also looks like it doesn't clear the "2 inches between head and halo bar" rule, especially for someone with a helmet on.

"race ready" in what series? Unless it passed Lemons tech, may be more trouble than its worth.

HATING the imgur pop-up ads; I can't control the phone screen long enough to get a good look at the cage.

I set up an account with postimages.org, which - yes - also has ads which present to me when I'm logged in to that site, but the 'hotlinks for forums' bring only the images to the threads here.

Just a suggestion.

Nicely done, thanks.

Spreader plate size?

Spreader plates could be small to non-existent. Now that I've looked at it on the real computer, I like that cage even less.

(BTW, that's the way to fix imgur links: on a real computer, click on the pic to make it pop up, then right click on it and put it in a new tab. Then you have a clean URL, and since I did it the OP isn't technically violating the TOS).

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Cell screen, and whatever pop-up blocking I might have couldn't help me. The pic was to small to see, and immediately when I tried to zoom, an ad covered 90% of the screen and wouldn't close.

Ninety f'n percent!!! Just a thin sliver remaining across the screen, and I couldn't close the ad.

I had to exit and close my browser to regain control of the screen.

Well: at least the car is painted yellow - that's a start. But _I_ wouldn't count on the cage passing tech.

Pocket computers are cool and all, but they do have some interface problems.

My pocket computer was out of commission for no apparent reason on Monday. It's only job is to let me stay connected, and it didn't do it.

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

I would pass, I have a buddy that got me into Lemons and like it was said above that if it has not passed Lemons tech in the last few years pass, he got a "race ready" fox body from another race series and it did not pass cost more to rip out the old cage and have a new one in than if he had just built his own car, side not all race equipment from the seat to anything that has to be in date had to be changed. for my 2 cents ether find a Lemons specific car that someone is off loading or build something you want the way you want

Team Captain: Highway to Schnell '06 VW GTI, it did run for a very short time! we will get there!
Team member: The Neighbors '89 Foxbody notchback 4 races, finished 2
no wins yet but hoping!

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Not really enough pics to judge the whole cage.

Does the extra bar fail?  I don't know, email Pagel.

That being said I have seen cages that don't match Lemons "how not to fail" pics perfectly pass,  I imagine extra bars are easier to pass than missing parts.  I don't recall a specific rule banning extra bars.

Is it a smoking deal?  Might be worth more pics and checking helmet clearance ect (maybe you are confident on the rest of the cage idk)

Either way I'd wanna see a lot more pics before making any call

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Thanks everyone, sorry about the imgur link.

Havent seen the car in person yet to really dig into the details of if we want to commit or not. Our last 2 cars also had the main hoop (and front down) fall inside the sill, but was not a problem as the plinth/spreader plates were secured to the sill well enough. Not ideal, but not a tech failure. Similarly the diagonal attachment to the vertical wall there isnt necessarily an issue unless it is compromising. I will have to see how its all tied together in person.

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

I don't necessarily think it's a fail. But I also like not dying when two Crown Vic's shove me into the wall at Road Atlanta. Also, a better cage design will survive hits that a less good one will not. You can't really straighten a bent cage safely.

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Now that I'm back in a place where I can't go anywhere for a few hours, so I have to stay here; and, while the battery on this cell phone lasts, I had a chance to look in more detail.

Y'know what no one - so far - has mentioned about the cage? (It's hidden in the above paragraph ;-) )

Also, the lr 'c' pillar (I think that's what it is) looks to have been cut and poorly ... ummm, welded?

The diagonal welded to the vertical panel I'm thinking is not _that_ bad an idea, but I don't see enough to make me happy about it.

Not sure tying the main hoop to that panel, with the weld along the side of the tube is sufficient for a spreader _function_, though there might be frame rails the panel spans which give support; tough to say without seeing it in person.

The "Petty" bar looks like an afterthought at the junction near the seat shoulder. The weld looks different, with a thicker surface bead.

Is this a special, secret candidate, known for having cage design difficulties?

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Looking at the driver's door bars they may not meet the 7" separation rule.

Well shit, did not see that. And it looks like the B-pillar on the pass side has some booger welds on it as well.

you would think by cutting the roof and getting access, you would have a better cage...

Oh well.

Very rare car, you probably never heard of it; 1995 mustang.

It is however dirt cheap, but also looking worse and worse... Not even worth the drive to check it out in person at this point.

HA! I very much enjoy your sense of humor.

Now:

"Y'know what no one - so far - has mentioned about the cage?"

Someone's going to drop the answer here shortly - stay back for safety.

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

Is the main hoop diagonal a smaller diameter than the rest?
OR, Is the pic distorting the tube to look smaller?

... though yes, I also thought that might be the case, but that's not the answer I'm looking for. And maybe yes, also.

He was talking about back staying (rear down bars?) I thought the same thing but I think it's just a weird angle

Backstay - yes.

I don't see the tube (that might be in a position to be a back stay) behind the driver actually landing anywhere in the below picture. It also looks white as compared to the grey of the rest of the cage, so I'm thinking it actually might be PVC just for a picture.

And yes, weird angles and joins for the tubes.

Those aren't good marketing pictures for a car someone's trying to sell, assuming they have legitimate ownership interest in the car.

Re: How's this Petty bar looking

I wouldn't recommend it if it hasn't passed Lemons tech or tech from "that other series" with identical rules. I'm not as freaked out by the cage as others in this thread, but I think those door bars are too far apart for Lemons. I don't think the petty bar would make it fail tech, but you can always cut any member out of a cage, you just have to leave the stub so you aren't damaging the bars that it's mounted to.
