Topic: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

So after thinking about the idea for far too long and attending last year's PNW closing race at Pacific Raceways, a friend and I have decided to take the plunge and build a car for the 2025 season. While we are both quite handy and mechanically inclined, this will be our first build.

Base Car: 1997 Subaru Impreza "L" Wagon w/ 2.2L NA engine. AWD, 5-speed. ~250k miles (odo dead), was daily driver until recent engine misbehavior.

We're planning to do this stuff before the race;

A: Engine diagnostics (tends to surge under load, ECU/MAF/fuel TBD)
B: Fix windshield
C: Remove most of interior
D: Roll cage
E: Seat/belts (sliding required given height deltas)
F: Install kill switch
G: Fire suppression (likely an SPA system)
H: Replace worn shifter linkages (so gear shifts are slightly less than guessing)
J: Replace clutch (maybe)

Question one: what did we miss?

Question two: neither of us are experienced welders, but generally mechanically handy. Are there any reasons we should NOT try to find something pre-built like a Rhodes roll cage and then work with someone local to install per spec?

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

From what I hear, Rhodes cages suck as far as fitment-they tend to be designed for cars with interior still installed. This makes for a lot of wasted space.Second, you're gonna want the seat installed first, then build the cage around it.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

For the cage, my 3 yen would be to do the custom option. The pre-made kits they list are not as reliable. So its better to measure the cage using their nifty template, and send it it. Same cost, just makes the fitment better. The seat must be in, fitter, etc... cause the cage is fitted around the seat and tight to the body of the car. SWI also another option.
Interior needs to be gone. if its flamable, needs to go. I keep the door panels, dash, hvac in my race cars if I make it from scratch.
Most oem seats are too high to be in race car, due to helmet and bigger head. lower profile sliders always nice. Lower better, just need to see out the top of the steering wheel.
For kill switch, dont forget dump load resistor, and use 4 or 6 pole type. Carter is nice.

Make sure you can get your fire bottle recertified. There's one of the manufacturer that is problematic, I just don't remember what that dead bottle at the other house was.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

We are running a 96 impreza coupe.

The cage is basically if you can't weld it yourself find someone to install a prebent cage or a custom builder.

People say front bearings fail when racing on subies.  I replaced ours on principle and they've been OK.

The stock oil pan sucks if you can corner.  (Stock suspension and shit tires it might not matter) we blew our first engine oil starving in a corner.  The 2006+ oil pan and pickup is much better for oiling in corners.

Not required but brake upgrade is sooo easy cause subarus are legos.  2002+ rs brakes are a little bigger, and wrx brakes are bigger still and can be gotten cheap.  We run wrx brakes with track pads and brakes are stupid good.  The gc chassis is much lighter.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

FWIW, we have a very good welder on our team, but he didn't want to be the guy that cost us $$$$ and lots of man hours only to fail tech inspection before a race. The cage is the MOST important part of the build. Gut the entire car, cut as much metal out of the drivers door you can, Buy your seat & mount it. Take the car and the rule book to a fabrication shop with your tallest driver and have them build you a cage. Expect to spend $2500+. It would suck to prep a car, spend all that money on entrance fees to fail tech.
Other items, replace all the bushings, bearing, brakes (upgrade if you can). I'd also got with a good shock/strut like Bilstein. As far as oil, run a remote filter with a cooler. This will add extra capacity. We ran a stock pan (small block chevy) for a few races like this, no issues. We have since welded in a trap door kit. Good luck.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

Hooray for more pnw teams. Send head gasket.

Get the seat in before the cage, but wait until the end to order your fire bottle and harness, that way if, er, when the build takes longer than you plan for they won't be expired when you go to race. If you want an expired set of belts to mock stuff up, I have a set that just went out of date.

Advance auto fab in Spokane does very quick turnarounds for fire bottle recertifications, for when you realize the week of the race that your bottle is expired (I know all about this, they did next day shipping to Olympia and saved our race). They do lifeline systems, they may also do Spa bottles, but it's worth calling them and asking.

Before you make any decisions about the cage, seat installation, or general modifications to the interior, I recommend talking with Doug Chase of Chase Race in Duvall:

https://chaserace.com/

He's an experienced Lemons racer and has built several Lemons-legal cages including the cage in his own Hudson Hornet and the one in my '67 SAAB 96. He's also a nice guy. Even if you end up not going with one of his cages he's definitely worth consulting first.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

Thank you all for some great advice! We clearly got the cage-seat-helmet install out of order, and given the height differences in the driving team, that will be where we start first.

Do folks in the greater Seattle area have a preferred or recommended race shop for helmets and seats? Since I have only borrowed helmets in the past, I have zero recollection of sizing by brand.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

Oh also speaking of order to do things, a professional cage builder might not care but our windshield was broken and we pulled the glass to make cage install easier, THEN  had someone come do the windshield.

Also fwiw when someone else above mentioned stock oil pan being ok.on their chevy, I was specifically talking about problems with the older subie oil pans.   Sure a nice high capacity oil pan is great but $$$ you can get a stock 2006 oil pan and pickup for so cheap...   our first engine blew from oil starving in turn, checked oil, only half qt below full mark.  Your cornering G forces may vary from ours,

Can't help you on local shops I ordered online.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

for my 2 cents I would also do the brakes (rotors and pads) wheel bearings and axels, these are items on front wheel drive and AWD cars that need replacing pretty often when ra king and better to do them and no have to do them at the track when everyone else is racing and glory is on the line. also if you have 250k a fuel filter is not a bad idea and replacing timing hardware (belt/chain etc)

I don't have much of a basis for comparison in that it's the only local shop I've visited but, for what it's worth, I got my current seat at 425 Motorsports in Kirkland:

https://www.425motorsports.com/

They seem to have a pretty good selection of helmets, seats, and other gear.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

We've been poking around and perhaps unsurprisingly, finding someone to build a cage is gonna be difficult. The recommendations here are booking out a year or more.

We've got a single extra referral from all of the calling around we've done, but leads seem thin. Has anyone else here worked with anyone aside from Chase Race in Seattle, or happen to have Portland recommendations? We can trailer the thing south if needed, but would really prefer to run sometime before next year.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

You should absolutely go with the recommendations here of resources that have been used by other teams.

However, if you come up dry, you can also put out a query on the Seattle Metalheads group (groups.io) https://groups.io/g/seattlemetalheads -- you could uncover someone that knows someone who does this kind of thing but not as their usual gig. But you definitely want to use someone who has done it before.

Or, you could continue to work on the '97, but also find a car that's been caged already and needs less or different work that you can get done by 4/19 or for sure August... and get it to the PNW.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

If you are ordering a prebent cage and having it installed (instead of a custom cage builder who does the bending inbhouse) be warned that these are usually "bent to order" and can have a significant wait time before they ship out.

I forget the exact timeline but we ordered from I think "roll cage customs" and where quoted some long time but where told if we paid a "bump fee" (which was several hundred iirc) it would ship that week.  Well it still took like a month to ship I think even woth the rush fee.  Once the cage arrives there is still a ton of notching and cutting to do so install takes longer than you might expect.

I just got the 12 week reminder for pacific, yall might be in trouble getting a cage done in time... so yeah probably gotta start looking further away for builder/installer.

Re: New Seattle-based 97 Impreza Wagon Team - Plan Review + Cage Recs?

I got a few bites. I don't know about April but I'm also a new Seattle team and we are doing the August race (hope to see you there!).

I found a guy recommended by Doug Chase that's fitting me in before August but he is booked out the next few months.

XO Fab is off-road / 4x4 centric but they might have availability too. They probably see more imprezas than new beetles.

As soon as I saw your thread I started pounding the internet pavement. Hope you find a fabricator!
