Topic: The Numbers

Two part question:

I've noticed that cars rarely use the mandated black-on-white/white-on-black scheme.  Is every team getting advance okays for this, or has the rule been laxed to "easily visible"?

Also, could a team just leave a blank spot for a number and then just paint one that hasn't been assigned during inspections?  I'd rather do that then slap a hastily painted 1 in front of the regular number, or turn a 5 into an odd looking 8.

Re: The Numbers

We've been ramping up enforcement of the number regs in the first few races this season. Lots of cars get exemptions--"easily visible" is the end goal, but teams do have a remarkably wide interpretation of what that means. Try reading numbers at a distance at the next race--you'll find that some are WAY easier to spot than others.

We're not crazy about painted-at-the-track numbers because they don't typically come out too well--hazy rattlecan numbers done by freehand don't really pop at 100+ feet. Once you get accepted, just choose a number and paint the sucker on.

Re: The Numbers

Let's put it this way: if your number is hard to read, you're way, way more likely to get an erroneous black flag earned by some other team- we'll send you right back out once we sort things out, but you'll still lose a bunch of laps. Legible numbers help you win!

Re: The Numbers

We just got hosed on this rule - we have an AWESOME 80 that looks like the earth and saturn's rings...but apparently not enough like an 80:

So, we're off to cover up our artwork with black and white.  I strongly suggest all teams do the same so you're not doing it post-green-flag at the track!

Re: The Numbers

Lemons South 09 was our first Lemons race. Going with the theme of our car we ran into the problem of wanting to stay with the theme of our car, and stay in the rules.

We shot Jay an email previous to race weekend .... he gave us a minimum size, and said it must be bright enough to see.  We made sure we went well above the minimum size to keep them as happy as could be, being they were already going to hate us because we had a miata.

Heres what we ended up with ...
