Topic: Rust in The Wind NiSaab 300zx Aero Getting Spun By The Corvair

Brett spins out on saturday about 2.5 hours into Lemons new england 2010.  We didn't get a ton of in car footage, but I'll post some more video if I find anything good.

Ralph Nader, attorney and consumer advocate targeted the Corvair in his book Unsafe At Any Speed[10] published in November 1965. Safety issues had been raised in The chapter "The Sporty Corvair" in which the 1960-63 Corvair was used as a dramatic case study demonstrating its alleged unpredictible handling characteristics. Nader asserted a greater tendency of loss of driver control, spin-out and even roll-over due to the early model's swing axle design rear suspension.

And that's exactly what I saw.

Re: Rust in The Wind NiSaab 300zx Aero Getting Spun By The Corvair

well, when you jump off the throttle mid turn in a rear engine car, you're just asking for trouble... hence the team's name "trailing throttle oversteer"

btw, are you the 300zx that had the articulating wing on the roof? i had a fun few laps battling you in the light blue saab until i got mired in traffic and you took off

Re: Rust in The Wind NiSaab 300zx Aero Getting Spun By The Corvair

Yeah our car was the red 300zx with the active wing, no hood and the Saab 9000 motor (NiSaab). Was that at the end of the day sunday? I wasn't driving then but I saw it from the stands , looked like a good fight.

I did find this video of your car from mid day saturday.

Well, I have a posting that will go live on Hooniverse.com tomorrow morning explaining this bonehead move on my part. I'm sorry guys, and if I could take it back I would. You raced well, and it was a great piece of engineering (who would have thought a Saab powered ZX would be so competitive!)

Re: Rust in The Wind NiSaab 300zx Aero Getting Spun By The Corvair

Hey its no big deal, this stuff happens!  We brought it into the pits to make sure we didn't damage the tank and then we were straight back out so don't worry about.  I know its a tricky car to keep on the track (maybe thats an understatement).

haha! that was one of my sister's second of 3 black flags in 15 minutes! don't ask me how she got away scott free with the first two, i'm still scratching my head...

yeah, that was at the end of the day sunday. also had a fun battle with the v8 porsche once you scooted away too. unfortunately, we were having what seemed to be a fuel pickup problem, so i had to come in with 15 minutes to go and top it off again, my sister jumped in the car for the last 5-10 min before the checkers

Does the Corvair have limit straps on the swing axles?

Re: Rust in The Wind NiSaab 300zx Aero Getting Spun By The Corvair

Normally, I'd call bullshit on "I got hit" claims (especially at Stafford, where everyone was innocent, but this appears to be one of the rare instances in which the car in question really did get hit.

Yeah definitely a good story I'm glad we got it on video!  This didn't really suck that bad. What truly sucked was getting our Dunlops stolen the night before we left for the race.

By the way UDMAN, the older guy in glasses that helped you out with the kill switch was my Dad. I think your car and the 2 stroke were his favorites.
