Topic: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

We had 25 cars or so at Stafford last year, which seemed like plenty for this crappy little track.  I see we have potentially 83! this year.  How are they all going to fit?  Are we expanding the track a bit?

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

Toledo last year has almost 60 cars (maybe more, memory is fuzzy) and I'd be surprised if it was over 3/4 of a mile track.  I think it was nose to tail the entire race except for around 3 in the morning when over half the cars were out.  Having that many cars on the track is part of the fun of Lemons!

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

I think Stafford is a 1/2 mile track.  Imagine Bristol (NASCAR) with twice as many cars on it!!!  This could be plenty ugly, glad I'm bringing a car I don't care about!

Here's hoping Nelson Ledges runs the whole track, not the abbreviated track...

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

We were watching the detroit entry count quite closely when the accept emails went out last year, and I think there were around 70 teams entered, but only 53 cars made it to the race.

I think it is typical for 15-25% of a race's entries to drop out before the race occurs.  I know we didn't expect how much time and money we were going to have to spend.  If we had started with only 10 weeks to get the car ready, I don't know if we would have made it.

Detroit thinned out about 6-8 hours in, but the first couple hours were packed and stressful.

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

We had, IIRC, 94 teams at the Lemons South race at CMP.  It was crazy!  It was almost impossible to avoid contact, and the new rule of both parties penalized for contact made it very challenging!

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

Well we are not far off that number for Stafford, only cut the track by 60%!  This could be like the early Cali bloodbaths...sounds like fun!

You're on cheap drugs.  I was there.  Although traffic was dense, we managed to make it through to our last stint (where we got tapped by the Lightnig McQueen car) without contact.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

So you did come in contact?

Yeah, I managed to make it through with no contact, until my last stint, when Beaver hunt decided to turn into me, luckily the corner workers gave us a freebie.

Avoiding coming in contact with another car is easy, avoiding them coming in contact with you is a little harder. There were a few new drivers out there that liked to chop you in the turns.

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

But isn't that the bar by which contact should be judged - no flag and no damage?  Incidental racing  contact.  Sure it's hard to do and it means not being as aggressive yourself, but not impossible.

That's what we had with the other car, incidental contact.  It was their fault - he waved, not saluted, as he went by.  That was when that driver was trying to catch the lead car so I understand the additional aggression.

Stafford could be filled with "incidental" contact.  Good thing I left the 5 MPH bumpers on the POS!

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

This time we're capping Stafford at around 60-65. We will adjust last year's layout as best we can to ease the congestion--we'll probably open up the chicane entering the front straight for starters. Remember, though, we crammed nearly 100 cars onto Altamont, and it seemed to sort itself out.

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

Getting rid of the chicane at CMP was awesome, was a lot safer also.

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

Wow, Nick, so not everyone got in?  84 applicants!  Don't accept cars faster than a Citation.  Wait, that leave a diesel mercedes.  Nevermind.

Glad you'll open the chicane, that blew last year and caused most of the illwell too.

65? Looks like I have to get my payment in, like NOW!

If you got your acceptance letter, you're in.  Payment due date is in like 10 days or something.  If you didn't get your acceptance letter, ruh roh...

Yes, but if you don't pay, they pass onto another team.....
I got the acceptance letter (actually, with a 63 Corvair, it was practically a shoe in) Now I have to get the other team members to pay up.

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

Since the Reno Race is like next weekend, I know it takes center stage. However, I would like to know the following:

Final Tally for entries for New England.
Who are the honorable judges going to be at this event?
Are we finally going to get a piece of destructive equipment for the Curse?
And is there going to be WiFi available?

Just wondering, that's all........

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

The entry list will be in flux until the payment deadline passes and reality sets in. We're shooting for a 65-car limit due to space limitations. Not sure yet on the honorable judges--Jay himself might take a turn. We should have a real piece of destructive equipment this time. No idea on WiFi...since there wasn't any last year, I'd guess not.

So there's still 76 cars listed.  Hmmm.

The Craptation is kinda not running anymore.  I hope we can get it going again, but we have a backup plan just in case...

Re: Stafford 2009 - how many cars?

Lamest Day at Nelson's will run the entire 2 mile track. The old 'short course' has been run on in at least a decade.

Nelson's should be able to handle a ton of cars.  I remember running an old Escort Endurance series race there in the mid-1980's with 68 cars on track. No problem.

Lamest day should be able to start 90 cars. IMHO

Bring good lights. There are swamp monsters that come out at night on the back part of the course.

They'll probably put 120 cars on that track, easy.  Good thing, the list is growing big.
