Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

How is it that every time something bad happens to the Bee, someone captures it?  I thought the mid-air cartwheeling Bee photo was a once in a lifetime shot, but I guess not.

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

Okay killer bee is one STUDLY car.....it survives an epic rollover & gets hit hard by a 2x heavier Z and still runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Pete is the man......

Just so I understand...I thought the B spun and hit the wall....then the Z spun and hit the B....or was it on track and both spun off together?

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

This is the incident being discussed in the other thread I suppose. Glad both guys were okay. Those old British rides are TANKS.

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

The B wasn't knocked out of the race by crash damage. It was knocked out of the race later on, due to violation of the "two fuel leaks = no more racing" rule.

Oh wow, two fuel leaks, doesn't it get leway for the two carburators like a leak per carb. LOL. Plus it's a BMC car impossible to not leak.

I thought it was because they lost the seal on their oil filter and the motor blew-up?
At least that's what Pete told me and we were pitted next to each other. Also the filter and
the amount of oil that was on the ground was another indication. Pete What really happened!

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

Pete told me the motor threw a rod. It was wedged in there somewhere and he wasn't able to get the motor going on 3 cylinders and get back out on track.

I love that Bee, and it sure is collecting its share of stories. Talk about racing heritage!

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

Maybe I'm mixing up the B with some other fuel leaker.

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

What Pete told me is that the anti-rust system went into overdrive. He felt sorry for the cars following the B when it went.
(something about a self-removing oil filter, or blown filter o-ring)
Which shortly relieved the rod bearings from their duty...

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

The B spun on turn 10, and my Z was a few positions behind it on a similar line, the spins happened almost sequentially. There was no contact before, we both took a bad line through a really wet road and spun the same way.

The tow guys managed to pry the fender out a little to keep the wheels from rubbing on the B and they pulled it into the pavement and it drove off.

The fender on the Z was wedged in there tight and the Z had to be flat bedded back.

That B definitely has a stronger body than the Z.

Both the B and the Z ran for the remainder of the day and ran on to Sunday.

Pete told me that the seal on the oil filter went out and it leaked dry. The driver kept it out for another lap or two instead of bringing it in and then it blew from oil starvation halfway into Sunday.

I was driving when the engine died.   The previous driver was out for a full hour and was going great until the throttle cable broke.   He was pushed in and Pete fixed the cable.   We refueled and I went out.   The first lap went well and everything seemed to be OK.   I started my second lap with no hint of trouble.   About turn 4 I noticed the power dropping off.   Because of the throttle cable problem, I thought it was simply the cable backing out of the clamp, and I could just nurse it in.   Going up the hill after turn 6 it completely died and I coasted to a stop off the track before turn 7.

I feel really bad about not stopping earlier, but there was only about 30 seconds between the first hint of trouble and it stopping.   I made the mistake of letting the throttle problem distract me from other possibilities.   I will never make that mistake again.

I really hope that Pete can get the Bee running again without too much grief, as I would hate to be known as the Bee Killer.

Don't fret, that Bee will never die.

It gets nervous in front of a camera.

Did you go into the tire wall on the Indy Chicane on 9? I saw you guys down there but I didn't see the impact.

nice to see some other bay area Lemons fanatics

Re: The Killer Bee and Z32 crash pics

If I recall correctly, I believe that #91 car started the race relatively straight. Was their center punch from some other left turn mishap?

Take note of the Bee's position and location compared to the Infineon sign just before and after the Z shows up. It got punted about 10' via it's left rear quarter. It's not shown in the sequence, but the Z's damage is all from that meeting.

That would explain Rule 3.1 – “Professionally made full rollcage required……. two driver-side door bars (X-design is acceptable)” What a concept - Glad everybody was ok.
