Topic: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

Welcome to the 1st “Seconds Saturdays” at Hanzel Auto Body Works

Because not every car was destined to be First

Greetings fellow automotive enthusiasts.  Here is your invitation to the first “Seconds Saturdays” held at Hanzel Auto Body Works in Oakland, CA.  Artists, hipsters and ironic moustache enthusiasts have “First Fridays” (http://oaklandartmurmur.org/) to support Oakland’s art and cultural venues.  “Seconds Saturdays” was concocted to support the culture of all things automotive.  And by “support the culture of all things automotive” I mean come and hang out with your unique daily driver, “race car”, or trailer queen and check out what everyone else brought.  We are equal-opportunity & non-discriminatory.  Imperfections welcomed; the “seconds” of the automotive world.  All years, makes, models and countries of origin are encouraged.  Fabulous French flotsam at this loosely organized event will be well represented with various years of Citroens in all manner of disrepair by your hosts, Henry and Chris Hanzel.  Bring your own exceptional example of automotive greatness to help balance out the stinky cheesiness of all this hydraulic hardware.

There will be limited parking within the shop (456 23rd Street, Oakland, CA) for display of your vehicle depending on how many “normal” cars are being repaired from run-ins with other immovable objects on the roadway.  During the week Hanzel’s is a working auto repair shop, but on “Seconds Saturdays” it will be a showcase of unique/fabulous/terrible automotive creations.  If there is no room in the shop for your car please park across the street from Hanzel’s in the Douglas Parking lot.  Be sure to pay for your own parking to avoid a fine or ticket.  It is only $7 and you can pay with old fashioned cash or newfangled smart phones.  Henry, Chris and Hanzel Auto Body Works does not pay for your parking.

The event will start around 8am and will run until 10am allowing enough time for any Lucas powered cars and their owners to enjoy the company of others during daylight hours.

A few friendly reminders about the event:
•    Location: Hanzel Auto Body Works, 456 23rd Street, Oakland, CA and the parking lot across the street.  There is room for 60 cars in the lot and a couple more in the shop.
•    Date and Time: July 9th, 2011 from 8am until 10am.
•    Do not drive like an idiot coming to, during, or leaving the event.  We want this to be a fun, safe venue to check out great cars and talk with other car owners.
•    Alcohol and drug consumption is not allowed nor encouraged.  Oakland PD will gladly fit you with a pair of custom bracelets and a chauffeured ride in a Crown Victoria if you disagree.
•    Remember to pay for parking if you use Douglas Parking lot or on the streets around the area.
•    Bring a camera to document all the other nuts who joined you at this historic event.

The goal of “Seconds Saturdays” is to create a semi-regular event in Oakland to showcase cool cars and boost the egos of their respective owners.  If all goes well we’ll do it again in August or whenever we get around to it.  Check back here for additional information and any updates.

Please direct all questions about the event and possible future dates to christopherhanzel@gmail.com.

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

A brief history of your hosts, Henry and Chris Hanzel, and Hanzel Auto Body Works

Hanzel Auto Body Works has been repairing all manner of automobile since 1918 in Downtown Oakland, CA.  This third generation family run shop was started by Henry’s grandfather, Sigmund Hanzel, continued with Henry’s father, Ed Hanzel and is currently keeping all forms of classic and daily driver on the road by Henry and his talented team.  In addition to the repair shop, Ed Hanzel owned a dealership on Broadway selling such high volume sellers as Citröen, Panhard, Morgan, and Lloyd during the 1950s.  So if your Lloyd 650 needs warranty work bring it on down!

Henry Hanzel is an Oakland native and was raised on all forms of internal combustion.  However, the brand that has leaked into his veins literally and figuratively (LHM green fluid) is Citroen.  From learning how to harness all 25hp of a 2CV to rallying his daily driver 1972 DS21 sedan (still his DD ~300,000 miles later; license plate “PLUSH”) in local SCCA rallies in the 1970’s, and crewing Jim Reddiex’s Citroen CX squad on the 1977 London to Sydney Rally (http://www.1977londontosydney.com) Citroens remain a daily part of the Hanzel Auto Body landscape.  DS, Traction Avant, 2CV and other Citroen’s frequently fill the bays of the shop as customers/friends seek the healing power of Henry’s hydraulic touch.

Chris Hanzel, Henry’s obedient son, followed his father’s advice and went to college to become a mechanical engineer so that he could work on anything other than cars during the week at his 9-5 so that cars could be kept as “fun” instead of “work”.  This has proven to be great advice because he loves nothing more than tinkering with his “project car hell” Intermeccanica Speedster, driving in CA Lemons events with his friends in their “Gone in 60 Laps/My Little Pony” Ford Mustang or attending other great automotive events to escape the grind of designing building systems as a Professional Engineer.  You can thank/blame Chris for coming up with “Seconds Saturdays” to help fill the vacancy of a nonchalant automotive showcase in Oakland.

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

Thanks to everyone that showed up to the first ever Seconds Saturdays.  Photos can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/christophe … turdays001  I'm guessing the odd cold summer morning and some race in Denver kept some folks away but we did have some Lemons representation with Andrew and Ben from Huey Newis and the Lose with their sweet Volvo and Datsun pickup.  There were more Citroens than you could shake a baguette at including DS wagons, sedans and convertibles (full size and pedal car variety) 2CV, Acadiane and Traction Avant.  In addition to all the frenchness were two different Ford V8 engine swaps into some unusual candidates: a Graham Hollywood and a Mercedes 220s.  Both were stunning and well put together.  The Graham with it's 302 was subtle with its slightly larger than stock tires and rake that gave it a luxurious hotrod look.  The Merc was slightly less subtle with its burbly exhaust and multiple hood louvers but it's installation of the engine and the guages in the stock dash made it look like they belonged there.  In order to maintain his diamond lane HOV status multiple Citroen owner and friend Jack replaced his Prius with a natural gas vehicle, an ex-Sheriffs Crown Vic that was amazingly clean and well maintained.  Purchased from an auction in Washington state and shipped down it now serves to part the ways of traffic during commute time in the diamond lane.  The push bar and A-pillar lights don't hurt to clear paths either.  Two neighbors down the street kindly brought their first gen Corvette and Porsche 912R.  The Vette is amazingly original looked fantastic with those wheels and hub caps.  The 912R is what Porsche should have made a racing version of the 912.  At under 1900 lbs this orange wonder is a sight to be seen.  Every part has been massaged over to help remove 300lbs from the stock weight.  One attendee was a recent transplant to the Bay Area from Boston and brought his Karman Ghia he purchased 2 months ago.  This was a really clean example and even had air conditioning!  The day ended on a high note with Hoon-in-training and future Uber-bird driver (by that time the car could qualify for Lemons Historics status) Henry Odell getting behind the wheel of our DS convertible pedal car.  Like the Ferrari clienti program where rich guys fly into a track, drive a race prepared car and then leave it behind for someone else to maintain, so shall be with Henry and the DS.  We will keep it in top form for whenever he flys in to drive it around the shop.

Thanks again for the turnout and I hope everyone enjoyed the great selection of cars that everyone brought.  A 2nd and 3rd event for August and September look likely so please put it on your calender and I hope you can make it out to the next Seconds Saturdays.  I'll be inviting a bunch of other local car groups to come and show off their hardware and help fill the lot across the street.  Lets hope for better weather in August and an even bigger turnout.

Thanks again!

Chris & Henry Hanzel

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

2 and a half weeks away from the 2nd Second Saturdays.  Any NorCal survivors of the upcoming Arse-Sweat-Apalooza should come with your battle hardened chariot and (over)dramatic war stories.

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

It's that time again for Seconds Saturdays in Oakland next weekend August 13th.  We had a great turnout at the first event with everything from full size Citroens, pedal car Citroens, Ford powered Mercedes and Graham Hollywood, Porsche 912R and a natural gas Crown Vic.  http://hooniverse.com/2011/07/19/the-in … ody-works/  Let's hope for some more summer-like weather instead of the grey winter day that greeted us at the first event and lets get some more unique cars, trucks, Vespas, rocket sleds, whatever you have lying around the garage.

Any survivors of Arse-Sweat-Apalooza should come with your battle hardened chariot and (over)dramatic war stories.  I want to see that Lloyd!!

Please park out in the lot across the street so we can try to get a sweet photo from the roof of the shop.  See you there!

We would love to bring Lloyd, but he'll have to miss this one, I'm afraid.  Please let us know when you plan to do it again and we'll see if we can arrange something.

That was a lot of fun! Great donuts, and the scones had everyone raving. But it was the cars that made it even cooler. That was the widest range/mix I think I've ever seen in one place. It was really damn cool. I'll be there next month (assuming the Bee don't die)!

If the Bee isn't well bring your Datsun SSS and your wife and her SMART.  We need to meet the woman who is so generous with her engines.  smile  I am hoping that with no Lemons race that weekend that some folks from HQ pop on by.  We need Alfas, VW buses, 2002s and whatever weird frenchy car Armand has.  Is it September yet? wink

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

3rd SECONDS SATURDAYS RECAP - September 13, 2011

Thanks to everyone who showed up to the 3rd and final Seconds Saturdays of 2011.  Don't fret, we'll be back in 2012 when the weather is better and even more project cars are (hopefully) complete and back on the road.  Despite the smaller turnout than the 2nd event we still had a great array of automobiles complete with the only attendee of all three events with his antithesis of trailer queens (driven to Utah and back since the 2nd event and up through Nevada and Idaho after the 2st event) and my favorite car, the Big Block powered Mercedes.  I love vehicles that are a nice balance of subtle and brute force and this vehicle is it.  Two other vehicles that fall under the similar vein were a beautiful pearl white Ford Falcon and a midnight black GMC Syclone.  Both fairly "simple" in appearance without some garish "LOOK AT ME" element but both that pack a punch under the hood where it counts.  Britania was represented again with MG A's and B's,  Francophiles in DS's, an Acadiane and a Traction Avant leaked hydraulic fluid again, no electric cars were present this time as the owner of the Tesla from the 2nd event instead brought his "electric blue" Volvo V70R station wagon and the home made electric Honda Civic stayed at home to make way for a Chevy truck on 20's (completely absent of chrome and low profile tires) from 1937.  We even had a grand-daddy of SUVs, an AMC Eagle.  For all you off roading enthusiasts (not poser soccer moms of the Stoneridge parking lot) a well appointed Jeep Wrangler of Hooniverse fame is for sale.  Photos of the 3rd and final Seconds Saturdays of 2011 can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/1014001983 … turdays003  We will be back in 2012.  If you have a club that wants to host an event on the Second Saturday of a particular month shoot me an email and let me know so we can sign you up as the "Featured Group/ Club/ Band on knuckle heads".

Thanks so much to everyone that has made these three events of 2011 memorable.  Spread the word for next year.  We look forward to more great cars, enthusiastic car people and scones (delicious again Mom!!).

See the info at http://hanzelautobodyworks.weebly.com/s … rdays.html for all the particulars, photos and other write ups on who and what has shown up at previous events.  Email Chris if you have any questions at christopherhanzel@gmail.com and want him to spam the hell out of your email to remind you about the next event in 2012!

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

More shameless self promotion.  I've updated the site http://hanzelautobodyworks.weebly.com/ with new stuff and have tentatively planned the first event for next year to be April 14th.  If you are part of a car club and want to be the "featured group of knuckleheads" let me know and I'll post a warning/invitations to others.  And we have a fancy new email address for all your spamming needs: SecondsSaturdays@gmail.com

Re: Hanzel Auto Body Works Presents "Seconds Saturdays"

Happy New Year friends of the automobile!  My dad and I are pleased to announce that the first Seconds Saturdays of 2012 will be March 10th at the shop. This years' events will be a more 'intimate' affair as we no longer have use of the parking lot across the street due to a new ordinance by the City of Oakland brain-trust and a light-duty chain across the driveway.  Apparently its to keep the riff raff out at night and weekends.  So instead you'll need to OCCUPY the shop with the rest of the Citroens and usual suspects.  Parking meters out front will be enforced too by Cushman trikes (they have nothing better to do on a Saturday morning) so be sure to bring your quarters just in case.  Parking inside is first come, first served along with the coffee, donuts, scones and whatever else we slap together at the last minute.  The door is usually up by 8am so please drive in slowly and try not to run over the other attendees and feral children.  Thanks for coming last year and we hope to see more cool stuff and car folks this year.

Chris Hanzel

PS. Motorcycles, scooters, pedal cars, steam trains, vintage boats and trailers are all welcome. We've had a few last year and it would be a hoot to see some more.
