Topic: Just another Lightweight

We at Team Apathy are working on a successor to our crappy old Saab 9000.

She is a bit on the rusty side from sitting outside since 88 but we'll get her buffed out. Details of the build so far are on our facebook page.

If you remove the patina from that car I will junk punch you up in your man business.

Re: Just another Lightweight

I had one of these as a daily driver for a few months. Much, much quicker than you'd think (i.e., still ungodly slow, but better than a 600cc motorcycle engine ought to be good for).

Re: Just another Lightweight

I had a 1970 AN600 (metallic blue with red interior-- only year for that combo) before I had a mini. Wasn't too bad. mine was the full crash box tranny. Narrower and higher seating than the mini. I've always wondered why I haven't seen a B16 in one (since everyone is sticking them in minis nowadays).

Good luck with the build!

Re: Just another Lightweight

I have to chime in with my never ending mini project: the '72 Z600.

Rear wheel drive! (a ghetto version of the Angry Hamster three-link)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/cheatcommando/Z600rearaxle1.jpg
It's a mishmash of parts from many eras and genres, but using the Z600 basic steering rack and suspension pickup points.

It was to be a LeMon, but after the Hamsters beat me to it I've demoted it to a street car...

Re: Just another Lightweight

Nice work on the Z600. That set up doesn't look all that different from the Angry Hamster rear end. I suggest you reinforce the suspension pickups on the body side. The combination of rear drive, a significant power increase and rusty sheet metal that has been hacked to pieces means that keeping the rear axle securely attached to our car has been an issue for us.

Not to worry, we are leaving the patina intact.  We are also calling it self healing paint. As you can scratch it and then leave it out by the beach for a while and it heals itself.  You didn't need to threaten my man junk though.

I also owned one of these back in the 80's.  We picked it up and put it into a 1/2 ton pickup to get it home. Slipped timing chain rendered it dead.  It is so narrow I could drive it down the sidewalk without getting the tires in the grass.  Lost of good times in that car....

Re: Just another Lightweight

don't you need a panhard bar or something to locate the rear laterally?

It's not in place in the picture, since I don't have the fabrication facilities at home.

I'll cross-brace the Panhard mount to the other side of the chassis.

Using the stock rear shock mounts, and Integra rear calipers with cut-down Prelude rotors to use the 4x4.5 Metro bolt pattern on Dutchman Racing custom axle shafts (3/4" shorter per side than the original S10 axles, I had to use shortened seals to get the axles into the c-clips)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/cheatcommando/Z600_rearaxlesideways.jpg

Speedway shock mounts and ebay G-body lower control arms and Samurai front shocks (the right length and ends and travel for this application...)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/cheatcommando/Z600_shockmount.jpg

As far as the body crumbling under RWD forces, I'm going to build a roll bar in the back half and tie the original front leaf spring mount to it, as well as the spring perches and shock mounts.
I also have left a lot more of the original structure than the Hamsters, hopefully that'll help as well.

Re: Just another Lightweight

Oooh, you have a fuel filler door. Sell it on eBay. Worth lots, if I recall.

And I think I see a cell in the rear with the engine. Does that mean there's another cell and engine going in the front? otherwise, you'd just put the cell in the front, no?

Would love to hear how you got the cell in those dimensions-- like turning a standard 15 gal on it's side-- I'm going to need something like that I fear.

Re: Just another Lightweight

The fuel filler door is pretty rusty. But now that I know they are worth something, I'LL GIVE IT A TRY.  I have been able to sell some stuff off it  that I didn't even want to touch.

No other engine, (I think a turbocharged  2 liter will be ample) and no other cell.   You are only allowed one cell no matter how many engines you have. The cell is a standard offering from ATL with the filler relocated. It is not cheap though!!

I'm sorry, that's one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time.  Good luck on the project!

They are XXR522's.  They were cheap and light.  Like $300 for the set of 4 delivered and 13#.

Re: Just another Lightweight

This build makes me happy. More pictures if you get a chance please.

Re: Just another Lightweight

I love N600's.. would like a nicely restored one..... Don't like the Z version tho.
