So I bought this for $400 missing some sheetmetal a few engine pieces and a wiring harness, what could I take off for it already being caged?
And by take off I mean the price... I sold the engine and transmission already and almost recouped my money already but I'm just curious if I can deduct some for the car already being caged?
Yes, just estimate how much caging the car would cost. Document well and there won't be an issue.
Or don't use any racy parts and the judges won't care, they've seen enough Miatas to know that stock ones really are $500 cars.
Or use an Iron Duke engine and they'll love you!
So would it be the cost of a cage? subtracted from what I paid for it? The cage from Miatacage.com is around $1k But that is more than I paid for the car. Judges say you cant go below zero for the value so maybe between the engine and tranny and the cage it would zero out the cost of the car?
If your in the negative you need to spend more
If your in the negative you need to spend more
Works for me
I'll post some more pics of how its going soon
This was the first car I bought for actually the same price. Car was totaled and the guy bought it back so I could but it from him.
Loading it up on the trailer in route to its new home:

Still had a lot of good parts on it which I sold bringing it back to zero, actually a little below but again thats the bottom of how low you can go.
Sold the canvas top with glass rear window with defroster along with the frame, and included the rear support bar for $250. Boom
You're already at Zero, but have no engine or trans. Nowhere to go but up...
Well I have the 1.8 engine and tranny out of the purple car so I was going to do the 1.8 swap over into the red caged car. And basically I sold enough off of it to zero out the car so I'm guessing the engine and tranny are now at zero. The red 1.6 car had a 1.6 and tranny in it that I sold already so I think right now I'm at zero for the build, plus my ebay rings and bearings and gasket set. Plus a clutch disc. Does this sound correct? I've had the same car in Lemons since 201 so I'm not sure about how things have morphed over the years as far as claiming sold parts.
If you've sold enough off both cars to get them each to zero, then you're at zero budget with all remaining parts included. Document everything and you should be good to spend $500. Just keep in mind that if you do anything fancy with the suspension that the judges will probably give you laps anyway.
So far as the suspension I found some of the factory Bilstein shocks and am using the stock springs cut down. Other than that I haven't messed with it to much other than cleaning and greasing everything.
Some more of the stuff I sold off of the car:
Did not know it at the time but these seats with the adjustable headrest were like a one year only and are very sought after:
The other little stuff:
the other power mirror, tombstone, and Frankenstein bolt pictures didn't transfer over but I have them
Here's the small block removed to make way for all the awesomeness of another .2 liters.
The grungy hole where that weenie little motor once lived:
Little baby rear diff won't be able to hold all of the stump pulling torque generated by the new 1.8L. so it had to go too..
Amazing how much gear lube a little miata tranny can hold:
Pulled the wiring harness out of the Merlot car to putin the red one :
And yes this is just one section of it arrrggggggg
While the rear subframe was out I went ahead and swapped in the larger 1.8 gas tank, and by larger I mean like a couple of quarts.
Had to make a piece to hook up the steering column since I wont be running the Miata dash
Had to weld up the windshield post where the cage builder cut it off to access some welds.

I'm not 100% sure that's "legal". I don't know if anyone will ding you for it, but if an insurance company has to get involved, they could claim the chassis wasn't designed for that tank and/or vice-versa.
I have heard that at least one team thinks another team is "cheating" by putting in a massive (near 30-gallon?) fuel tank from another series of the same car that came as a diesel and put it in their gas powered car. Not sure if that is just paddock whining and don't think it has been officially pursued.
Thanks Spank, It's a stock gas tank from the 95 Miata and I'm putting it in the 91, there wasn't any structural differences in the car where it bolts into at and it only hold like 12.7 versus the 11.9 that is stock for a 91. I'm considering putting a fuel cell in the back of the car after I get it running under it's own power but right now this is what I have. Still trying to get this thing running and driving and then themed by the April CMP race

Fitting the dash for this thing:
Building a hardtop from scratch:
Yes that's a factory Miata Hardtop underneath, I suckered, threatened, Asked to borrow for this little endeavor
