Topic: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

I've read here and there on Facebook that quite a few people are thinking of towing to Joliet from far afield. If half the people thinking that do so, I think it has potential to be something of an all-star race in the middle of the country.

It's pretty far in the future, but who all is thinking about driving to Joliet for this insanity?

Team Glue Sticks will be there.  We're running 2 cars out NJ (626 and a Firebird) and so we'll be at NJMP in May.  Which ever car survives best is what we'll be brining to Joliet.  Very excited about our first true 24 hour race!

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

We should be there with the "new" celica, which is nothing more than a new shell, and all the old internals.  So, still achingly slow.  But there is no way we will be missing a true 24 in the midwest.  Any idea what they are planning as far as tracks?  Is it going to be similar to the 14 hour last year, with it switching from short course to long, or do we actually rank and get the long course the whole time?

I'll drive the 45 minutes to Joliet with the Escort, if I must.

I've lost a lot, but the Fairlane finally won an IoE.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

Despite my personal loathing of night racing and lamenting of the Saturday night beers and brats session, Team Bad Decisions will be there.

Our Team Captain may have to sit this one out but has promised to make an all-star appearance for BS inspection and Friday Night revelry so others will not be deprived of his company for the whole time.  He will expect double the bacon, brats and steak on Friday evening to make up for it and at least three times the pretty girls paying attention to him and petting his belly.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

TARP Racing is planning to attend. We got the car all ready for ECR and then no race, so we're basically ready for Joliet now.

WAIT.

That's a 24? I am SO there. Who needs a Class C driver?

I'm going to need to move heaven and earth because I have another vacation starting 2 days after the race that originates in a roadtrip, but  I'll figure something out.

That, I don't know, although I do know that the members at Autobahn throw a poo fit if they don't have access to the track on a weekend day.

If I had to guess (and it is very much a guess), I'd suggest Lemons gets the South Course until about 5 p.m. Saturday and then finishes the rest of the race on the Full Course so the members can have their country club back Sunday morning after 10 a.m.

Autobahn's calendar actually shows the whole weekend on the South Course currently, now that I check.

Wake up man!  It's been all over the interwebs.

PM me. We might need a 6th or 7th.  I might even tell you what our utterly awesome Class C build (debuting at Gingerman) is ahead of our reveal.

The lights are still on the car and it was running after 14 so might as well go.  Now to figure out if we should make it less awful or be lazy again.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

Can we start talking about light early.

Mainly Do Not Buy Off Road LED Light Bars.  They are omni directional so you can't aim them and just annoy everyone else.  It seemed most of them had to be taken off the cars or left off, the ones that stayed I'm guessing had to be aimed pretty far down to limit its use.

I guess its best to be sure my team wasn't annoying anyone with our lights either.  We tried to aim things so we could see but it wouldn't blind anyone, but I figured it would be good to check to see if we need to work on it more.

omg this!

saw some cars going down the main straight on north course that were illuminating upwards at a 45* angle.

definitely need some sort of headlight calibration standard.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

Lights aimed to the side are needed so you can see around the turn. If the lights were all pointed straight ahead. I. E. where the cars nose is pointed you wouldn't be able to see where you're going in a turn since the cars nose is not pointed where you want to end up.

Fog lights with a narrow vertical  spread but a very wide beam are good for lighting up turns and if mounted low don't blind drivers in front of you since the light is low to the ground.
Mounting lights on the roof may work well "off road" but don't work well on a race track since the lights will blind drivers ahead of you. Lights mounted to the hood especially if the hood has a slope to the front is a good place. The best is the stock OEM location with some fog lights mounted lower.

We are in the same boat, we had the car ready for ECR. Trying to talk the team into a road trip. Is this one of the races that fills up?

Typically I don't think it has filled up, but I don't know how many extra spots there are, and with being the only 24 in the last few years it may.

If the race is truly only the South Course (Less than two miles) and a lot of teams are traveling in from outside the region, I wouldn't be surprised if this one does fill up.
