Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

We have a yellow one that we started making into a Lemons car. We showed pictures of at NJ, we are in the process of stripping it right now.

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

Awesome! You will have to let us know how the cage build goes.  Are you planning on entering it in a race next season or this season?

Bolt pattern - it's either Spitwad -er Spitfire or mini - which is to say 4on4 or 4on3-3/4. that said. um, good luck?

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

It would be for next year.  The roll cage attachment issue has been the main debate amongst us.

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

yeah let me know what you end up doing. We were thinking about doing a setup similar to this:

At least, add diagonals, door bars, etc and you'll be getting there.

Send me your cage design before starting... we can avoid missteps that way.

John,

Regarding the subframe or, bottom part of the cage shown in this picture do you want it to be made out of the same tubing as the cage, or can we use square stock like 2X2 steel with .12 wall thickness?

Don't forget to pitty them.

There are going to be parts and pieces of that thing scattered all over the garage.  They are going to need more little plastic baggies than Snoop Dog.

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

Well heck.  I should have figured that we wouldn't be the only people to try to run one of these @ Lemons.  We've had one for over a year, but have put most of our effort into keeping the E30 running amidst our increasingly busy non-LeMons schedules, so the Elite has been somewhat neglected.

We have managed to get it stripped & start mocking up cage designs, but that's only happened in the last couple of months.  At the moment, the E30 needs some love, so the Lotus goes to the back burner again.

Ours is a little unique in that it was extensively modified back when bell bottoms were modern style and Corvette Summer was on the big screen.  We happened upon it through a refrigerator sale on craig's list (no joke) - it had been rotting in someone's garage, got some attention a few years ago, broke, and went back to rotting.  It may have been a show car at some point judging by the "Look, but don't touch" sign we found buried under some corduroy next to the mouse nest and molted lizard skins in the cabin.

Misery loves company, so here's hoping for some good shared info & luck on getting these horribly beautiful monsters [back] on a track.

Colin Chapman would be prou... err...  uhh..  think we are all idiots.  smile

Ahhh, this is where I might earn a seat in this fine racing machine.  I am prepping a Jensen Healey and I also have a spare Lotus 907 engine in my garage, along with the growing knowledge of such engines as I deal with the Jensen.  We might be able to help each other out SwissRacing.

The highest quality brought to you at great JayDM prices.

JayDM? Does that mean they come at a cheap-ass price? As in "I found this in the junkyard and the car was so rare and unwanted the owner gave them to me."

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

I liened a 1980 Eclat that was actually in decent condition. I thought it would make a good Lemons car, after all it was yellow. All of the smog equipment was missing & it had Dellortos. I got it running & did  a brake job on the rear, but with the 3sp Automatic Transmission, it was the slowest accelerating car I had ever driven. I sold it for $4k to a guy that is converting it to an electric vehicle. If I could find a 74' with a manual trans I would consider making a smog exempt street car with an s2000 engine.

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

Well we finally started tearing into the Lotus, the cage build won't be that bad after all.  The Lotus has steel side sills that we can bolt the front 4 point of the cage to. Then we are going to join the side sills to the back bone of the lotus via 4 more connecting points.  The only other trick things are going to be the seat mounting and our fuel cell setup  We have to build a frame to mount the seat to because the factory points are just thicker pieces of fiber glass.  We are also going to have to make some sort of cage for the fuel cell because aft of the rear wheels there is no metal protection, only fiberglass.

The mounting points have to be tied into the backbone... really.. or I will fail the cage.

I believe you or someone else on the Lemons tech crew already helped another team with their lotus elite cage design.  We are basically going to copy their cage design.

Here are pictures of their cage design, please let me know asap if you have any issues with how they tied into the backbone.

The Elite looks like an elongated Gremlin. (Disclaimer - I used to own a Gremlin.)

Yes, do it like that.  I worked with the fabricator on that one. Spent a while on the phone.

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

Just to double check it appears that the front 4 points are only bolted the side sills, and the same with the connections going to the backbone. Are you ok with this?

We've been waiting a long time for a Lemons Elite.

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

hurray!  This is going to be epic!

My master plan was to wait until someone totaled my Elise (just a matter of time since I daily drive it), buy it back, and start looking for a Europa to drop the powertrain in.  I suppose that plan is still in effect since this is a hideous Elite and not a hideous Europa.  smile

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

Just a heads up, the cage shown in the link was not complete at that time. There's more reinforcement on the passenger side, and the lower min hoop brace that goes over the transmission tunnel was tied into that tunnel.

Chotus! Chotus! Chotus! Chotus!

Re: Lotus Elite Barn find, SwissRacing's next LeMon Car

Thanks for the heads up, I was already planning on connecting the lower main hoop bar to the tunnel, and also adding x bracing to the other four points that are connected to the backbone.

I'm curious if anyone knows of a different transmission that can bolt up to the lotus motor?

I know that the stock transmissions are terribly unreliable and I fear ours may already be broken.

Doesn't it use the same motor as the Jensen-Healey? Not saying those are a paragon of reliability, but they are more common then Lotii
