Change of plans: it's up on jack stands and I've gone through all of the extra parts and started tearing apart the powertrain and suspension. It's actually in pretty good shape, considering that it was dismembered and abandoned in a field for 20 years. I found a source for cheap Opel parts ( http://www.opelsunl.com/ ) and it looks like it really just needs bearings/bushings/seals to get it going again. As tempting as a Honda-powered Opel is, I like the thought of running it in all of it's RWD carbureted points-ignition glory.
On a side note, after working with Hondas for years, everything about this car is unbelievable thick and heavy. Axles, sheet metal, crankshaft, pretty much everything is built like a tank and apparently they hadn't heard of aluminum. At least it's all metric, my collection of SAE tools is pathetic.
Everybody grab your brooms, it's shenanigans!
