Re: We got a second race car today:

Ok on the engine.  I'm just on the look-out for a pair of small displacement 4 bangers.  Figure when the engine in our 280z dies it would be fun, and completely wrong, to weld two of them together and make a small bore straight 8.

Yeah!  I suppose we could weld them together at an angle and have an offset V8....

It's got a 1.9, which purportedly came from a daily driven Opel GT and is in good running condition. There's a crapload of other parts with it, three rear ends, but no flywheel, just a flex plate from an automatic, an extra set of pedals, a huge pile of white powder in the driver's footwell, a bunch of steel wheels with tires in various states of decay, etc.

Well, unlike some of our vehicles, it doesn't have a noticeable funk, so maybe that's it. I need to put a big pile of that in my minivan.

Re: We got a second race car today:

Change of plans: it's up on jack stands and I've gone through all of the extra parts and started tearing apart the powertrain and suspension. It's actually in pretty good shape, considering that it was dismembered and abandoned in a field for 20 years. I found a source for cheap Opel parts ( http://www.opelsunl.com/ ) and it looks like it really just needs bearings/bushings/seals to get it going again. As tempting as a Honda-powered Opel is, I like the thought of running it in all of it's RWD carbureted points-ignition glory.

On a side note, after working with Hondas for years, everything about this car is unbelievable thick and heavy. Axles, sheet metal, crankshaft, pretty much everything is built like a tank and apparently they hadn't heard of aluminum. At least it's all metric, my collection of SAE tools is pathetic.

Aren't SAE tools what you hammer on to rounded off metric fastenners anyway?

Re: We got a second race car today:

Holy crap, it's been years since I made this thread.

Incidentally, after winning our second Class B trophy and deciding that we don't want to be in Class A, I got to work on the Opel again and got the Honda subframe mounted in it, and have the suspension zip-tied in place so I can make the upper shock and control arm mounts. We tentatively plan on debuting it at the last CMP race.
