IMHO, the mistake a lot of teams make is to put the switches too far forward to easily reach when you're belted in tightly.  Sure, the dash (or crossbar) is a convenient place to mount things, but if you can't reach it what good is it?

And even if YOU can reach it now, there's no guarantee that you won't have some short-armed freak on nature on your team in the future, or maybe you'll have to move the seat back to fit some giant and then where will you be?

Also, the transmission tunnel is tempting, but with a horse collar or other neck restraint  on you'll often find that even though you can reach the switches you can't look down and SEE the switches.  Fumbling around blind trying to turn on the wipers while NOT turning off the fuel pump is no fun.

If you can, find a way to mount the switches in an easy to reach AND see place, like so:

It's hard to tell from the pic, but how can you get to the extinguisher?

You are only entitled to the space you occupy.

Re: Lets see gauges, switch panels and cockpit photos

By hitting the fire suppression (the o-f**k!) button mounted on the right of the gauge panel.

Forgive the dumb question but is there a difference between AC breakers and DC breakers?

I'm going to say yes, they should be triggering on amperage, which shouldn't matter AC or DC, but I don't think I'd risk it.  The small glass fuses are usually rated for AC but are used all the time in DC circuits, but I'm assuming you're talking about the larger household type AC breakers.  Although a large 220v panel at the dash would look a tad interesting, unless you've got a flux capacitor in the back it's probably not worth it.

Re: Lets see gauges, switch panels and cockpit photos

For DC applications, derate an AC switch by half. A 10A switch becomes a 5A switch. DC current is "on " more than "AC". More heat gets generated.

breakers and fuses are actually a wattage limiter so volts*amps
no one seems to remember that which is really troublesome in the electric car community. Trying to buy a 108v 400a fuse people keep telling be to get the 136v 400a

Oh, breakers. Not switches. I need to stop working on this car before 4AM and get more sleep.

We had similar issues when we did the motor swap and did away with the factory column ignition switch.  If we put them on the tranny tunnel, an errant sleeve or glove could flip the ignition switch off while operating the shifter or e-brake.  Building an out-cropped box wouldn't work either, since we didn't want to clutter the area teammates used to strap in a driver from the passenger side.

I don't have a picture, but we settled on putting the ignition switch and start button on the inside driver's door.  It is mounted forward and high, and doesn't get hit huring ingress/egress.  Additionally, this puts the switches in reach of any driuver we use- best of all is any teammate can operate the switches from outside the car, without having to lean in or search for them.

Here's ours.  I used an old piece of plexiglass and painted it black on the backside.  I attached it to the dash cross bar with angle brackets and pop-rivets.  I ditched the factory igniton switch and relocated everything to the "command center" as one of my teammates likes to call it.

Sort of.  We have an MP3 player that plays our team's theme song (Magnum, PI) through a pair of sepakers we have mounted facing outward.  You can see them near the rear of the car in this pic from last year's NYE event in Miami...

Re: Lets see gauges, switch panels and cockpit photos

Less complicated is more reliable, resist the urge to hack up the factory wiring when not needed. Every time you add a switch or splice in a gizmo it's another point of failure. We saw no reason to add switches for devices that are usually controlled by the factory electrical system. We did need to remove the ignition switch do disable the column lock so we made this simple box. Toggle for ignition 1, ignition 2, START, volt gauge, and a cigar lighter jack for the diagnostic tool.

2 switches, that is the only things our drivers are concerned with.

You must not have a German car...hacking the wiring IS the path to simplicity!  ;-)

Re: Lets see gauges, switch panels and cockpit photos

I kinda figured that the KILL switch was a good master on / off.... and so just have a start button for it now...   turn the power on via kill switch....  +12v to the starter solenoid...  in a momentary Push to make "contact" spring loaded switch and away we go.

as to switch on the column...  Saabs don't do that anyway -smiles-

Nope, it's a Saturn. There are literally only about a dozen wires that make the car run, the damn thing will run just fine with an Automatic transmission PCM (the car is a manual now), the EGR and CP solenoids missing and  the gauge cluster completely unplugged.

I have a separate ignition switch and the starter push button is wired to the "always hot" side.  That way I can crank the engine without it starting.  It's good for compression checks.  Downside is eager drives sometimes forget to hit the ign. first during driver changes.  Then that spit second of panic "why isn't it starting" followed by "turn the ignition on you idiot"

If it doesn't have 2 doors, 3 pedals, and 5 lug nuts per wheel - It isn't a real race car

Stock tach, gas gauge, wiper stalk, light stalk.  Outside mirror adjust moved from door panel and JB welded to steering column.  Speedo disconnected. Volt meter behind steering wheel on right.  PTT on wheel.
We operate on the KISS principle...Keep It Simple Stupid.  We too, like being able to work the switches from the outside.  We can, with the right hand, start the car and with the left hand work the throttle in the engine bay.
