Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

Even if it's the full course the whole time, I imagine it will fill up.  There are a lot of us fools that truly love the mind-numbing wierdness of getting shaken out of a cold sleeping bag at 4 am, filled full of your favorite caffeine beverage, then strapped into some form of "race car" and pointed in the direction of the track.  Plus, seeing the sun coming up in the race car is really a bucket list sort of thing, I am so glad I have been able to do it a few times.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

Isn't the full course 5 milesish?  They have put 150 cars in 2.25 miles at NJMP.   I don't see 300 cars showing up, that would cause complete madness, especially when the sun goes down.  Thanks for all the lighting tips too

South Course is 2.1 miles, I guess. I thought it was 1.9

Full Course is 3.5 miles.

The most cars I think that have been at Autobahn was around 110, maybe 120? The paddock could probably, in theory, handle another 30-40 out at the east end. If they let Lemons use the "Member Paddock," you could probably fit another dozen or so there, but there's a fat chance of that happening. I'd guess entries will be capped at around 140 or so.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

Regarding lights...

Not all light bars are created equal and I second the "no off-road lights".   Their beam pattern is great for illuminating the ups and downs of steep terrain, but simply too wide for track use, they throw lots of light up into the air where it does the driver no good.

If you are serious about racing at night (like you intent to do more than one of them, spend the cash for good road-race lighting, it will set your team back a few hundred bucks but after one stint, you'll never want to race at night without them.  Rigid makes excellent road racing lights (just make sure they're not the Rigid off-road lights!)  Then, as mentioned earlier, make sure that they are aimed properly to shift the focal point out of other car's mirrors, and onto the road where your driver wants it.

Also with the number of dead cars a little after dark I would suggest making sure your charging system is in good working order.

Morrow's will be there, the only 24 hours race I did was the Lamest Day and I did not have a whole lot of fun. No one from the original 5 except for myself is still racing and I'm sick of towing to the races, so I'm driving this hooptie to this race. Here comes another RACE VAN, bitches! big_smile

Will this raced van debut again Joliet, then?  Any more details you're willing to share?

I've got three cars entered. if you can make a magic triangle run backwards, it'd make the lightest car go very much quicker.

Hmmm last time we came to Joliet, we had a Geo cup. Maybe we should try to make it this year and we could have a Racevan Cup AND a Geo cup.

Re: Counting your chickens early: Autobahn 24-hour race in July

FWIW, I emailed the track to see when we are allowed into the paddock. He said 5pm on Thursday evening for those participating in the test/tune. Cheers.

Also, he emailed me back within like 3 minutes of my email to him. I don't think I've ever gotten such swift response from a track, especially on a Monday morning. This is a good omen.

For being a fancy pants country club they seem to really like us.

Also while they say test and tune people they tend to not really push it at the gate, most I've heard is that you may have to just say you will sign up tomorrow for it when your other drivers are there, but last couple years they just want to big group of cars to get out of their front parking lot so they just let everyone in as quickly as possible.
