Amen, I say, amen to you sir. I think I finally went down for the count somewhere in the middle of Book 5 of The Confusion. I pre-ordered Anathem from Amazon and have now made 4 different attempts to get through the start of that one, but I just don't have it in me.

I keep saying it, and everyone keeps ignoring me, but turning 1959-75 Detroit 2-door cars into NASCAR replicas would be pretty damn cool. If you go with the 70s, your team could wear appropriate sideburns.

We actually thought about this but figured it was too easy.  I mean, you're already in fire suits, right?  What more to a "costume" would there be (except the sideburns, good point).  We figured that going for a completely whacked, non-sequiteur, semi-secret theme was a lot more fun.

If it ain't broken, fix it 'til it is.

My wife has told me that no one will get our theme, which is loosely based on "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" ... sigh.

I'm making the Animal House Deathmobile if it was filmed by Rob Zombie instead of national lampoons.

Lightning McQueen has been beat to death, as has cop cars, cabs, pirate ships, and Lemons. Like said above, if you do one of these themes, do it way over the top. Check out the Police Brutality cop car. Holy freakin crap is that over the top!

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

Anyone done Rocky Horror?      It'd be pretty badass to have have the crew done up as Franenfurter, Riff-Raff, Brad, Janet, etc.. Time-warp dancers etc...    The tough question for the team that does it:  who's going to be Rocky and wear the tight gold-lame' shorts?

Gosh, my business card says 'Tech Tyrant'

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

I haven't been around for too long, but there seems to be a surplus of "pimp" cars.

These are a few themes I passed on because they are just too good and I thought for sure that they had been done before. Tell me if I am wrong.

-Mystery Machine
-Mutt Kutts van from Dumb and Dumber
-Delorean time vehicle (I even have the JVC camera)
-Pimp caddy from Escape From New York complete with chandeliers on the fenders
-Mad Max interceptor (Road Warrior version)
-Wienermobile
-Any car from Death Race 2000
-Star Trek shuttlecraft
-Space shuttle
-Conestoga wagon
-A House
-Chia
-Fake NASCAR with rediculous sponsors
-shoe
-Car that looks like 2 motorcyclists riding in tandem or you in a fake sidecar
-Miata aircraft carrier with model planes on flight deck
-A dessert with a fork sticking out

You have some GREAT ideas.
You can check out Judge Martins writeups on Jalopnik for a history of some of the cars to see if I've missed some

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

there's the Chia Neon from the Latch-Key Kids. pretty mediocre theme, but awesome drivers/team. I haven't seen them since the detroit/toledo race in 08 though.

military, cop, pimp, poop and "race" themes seem to be really all overdone.

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

Chia Neon is a perennial Detroitish entry,

I have gogo boots for my role in the Scirocket's first theme of the year. We will decide whether to keep it based on the responce at GingerMan.

And purple hair. And no, I'm not going to be Lady Gaga. This is way way way way the hell cornier.

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

Purple hair?  Gogo boots?  If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were going with a Zlad theme...

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

No, that one is later in the year. We do have plans for a crappy 80s band theme. Our programmer is working on our soundtrack for that, but he's being a wanker and didn't get it done yet.

Our substitute theme is really stupider. My 9YO is very proud of it.

One idea:  The Missing Link....between a Car and a Turd.
(idea of a rolling piece of shit)
Paint the car flat black and do a skeleton on it.  If someone has access to some good material for 3D effects put a spine over the top.

Latin name would be volubilis fimus congeries (rolling dung pile).

Re: Which themes have been done to death?

The solid colored car with a number on it has been done to death.  Sometimes even changed up with performance parts stickers.  I'd say that's the most popular theme.  Seriously, how do these guys get in?

Minivans are always welcome, regardless of theme. However, I'd rather see a Gulf-ized GM Dustbuster, since we've had a couple of Caravans.
