We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

The way I figured was you can either have lots of driving skill(and money for tires/brakes) and negotiate turns fast, or you can have more power then you know what to do with and just worry about the straights.  Since I lack skills, I chose the latter.

If your car is slow, then my car is pretty

Our 240Z with a happy 2.8 liter gives V8 Mustangs a serious run for the money and usually wins.

So while I have thought a lot about a V8 Z, we have plenty of power.  Some more grip would be nice.  We already turn well but we could still turn better launching us even faster onto the straights.

I want an LSD and some serious rubber!

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

If you're driving your slow car slow, it's your fault.  If you're driving your slow car as fast as you can you're getting the same adrenalin rush as the guy in the fast car (maybe more 'cause you've got to look at whats coming up behind you as much as rushing up to your windshield.)

That's correct - as I remember it, the 4 cylinder mustang came in second.

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

it all comes down to power-to-weight...you don't need big power if you don't have lots of weight.......like metronome.....  With that said I'd love gain power, loose weight or BOTH.....since if some is good...more is better right?

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

OK, I'll go against the prevailing winds and vote for reliable.  I'd rather be driving anything than working on the car or sitting out the race.  I want fast, but there are plenty of horribly slow cars out there for a mediocre car to pass and race with.

Not all who wander are lost.

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

There is no replacement for cubic inch displacement. That being said, just put a v8 in it. (just bring spares) If you still are too slow put a ghettocharger or two on it.
I drive slow to and from the race and have no fast driving skills on the track. Therefore I can still dream of going really fast.

Sorry i will take a 20B with GT35-R all day long over a V-8. We may use a little more fuel but out run them every time.

I'm seeing more and more last gen rx7 and 944 turbos w/ ls engines in them.

Personally, I love it.

I've got a bunch of track miles (thousands) and well over 250 1/4 mile passes on my 70kmile ls1.  Just overfill it w/ oil by 1-1 1/2 quarts and let er rip.

Naw........ I still think my old school Pontiac motor will piss farther than your 20b w/gt35-r.
Just won't last as long, but then again I have quite a store of old school Pontiac parts & motors.

you can apparently throw an LSx into just about anything b/c they're so compact.  Jalopnik has a great writeup on an install in an E30.  you can even buy a CD complete w/ engineering drawings from the guys who did it.  total weight gain was something like 85 pounds...gotta love aluminum blocks.

i have my eye on an LS-powered Miata, although an LS'd RX-8 ("LSX-8"?) would be nice, too.  you know, once we get done building Lemons cars.

What wouldn't make a LS RX-8 a Lemons car?

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

Ls conversions are popular in just any sportscar nowdays.....they work REALLY well in 928's....loose 200lbs and get better weight % since the engine is about 5" further back in the car...  I do have a line on a used 5.3L truck engine that fits in the Lemons budget...  only time will tell

so, you want to go out slowly, backwards and on fire with an englishman on your hood pounding on the valvetrain with spanners?

contrary to popular belief you CAN get fast, reliable and fun from sub-$500. However, if you have at least one complete douchebag on your team it'll kill it for the rest of you and some of the other teams possibly as well. It's good to get engaged and up into that crazy, focused range of human behavior, but don't forget to breathe and when you hit the straights make sure you relax, sip some water, and refocus. You'll have the best time of all that way.

Re: The ultimate Lemons Racing ???? fast vs slow car

FAST, as long as the supporting hardware is there; brakes, suspension.  Going into a turn with a fast car and brakes made for a slow car sux!  Truth is that its all about shedding weight.  the Miata put down 72 whp as set up for the last race, I would not call that a fast car.
