Re: getting an e46 out of class A

Ok so I think I'm moving forward with goldwing power. I *think* it Should fit between shock towers. If anyone has  a 1500 laying around that they can get me exact dimensions that would be fantastic. Waiting to hear back from some Craigslisters.

Excelent Choice!

Unfortunately I ride a GL1100 so I can't get you measurements on the 2 wheel accord style engine.

But if all else fails, there's always the back seat!

I really wanna say it's wider. May just be all the Fairing around it. But even on a Valkyrie it sure seems wider.

Perhaps a fallback engine is needed, in case the goldwing motor doesn't work out?

Mitsubishi Astron 4G54/G54B - 2.6 L inline four.  Bonus: the cylinder heads have hemispherical combustion chambers, so you can slap HEMI decals all over your ride.

Fallback engine is a great idea. But 4g546g blah blah blah. I know not of what you speak. I come from German car roots.

Re: getting an e46 out of class A

I think I should add alittle criteria. Let's say. Must be stick. Engine and transmission should be readily available. Pre efi. And available from one donner vehicle. If not readily available then reliable/ rebuild able. Also I think it should go up front. I don't want to have to fuel cell it.

Contrary to what I said has anyone run a chain drive bike engine in the truck spinning a gear bolted to the input of the diff?

Thanks! That was some exilent reading. Confirmed my suspicions that chain drive is not the way to go. But I never even considered which direction the goldwing shaft drive spun.

So as a backup plan  I may have an om617 car available to me at a very low cost. Only 380k miles with a matching auto. Manual trans options are very limited. Also might be too solid for class c. Class b?

Re: getting an e46 out of class A

It's easy. what side is the final drive located. if it's on the right side of the bike it turns Counter Clockwise like most engines including the BMW M52 in the E46 does.

If it's on the left like a Shadow then it turns clockwise.

This is as looking into the engine along the drive shaft. (the "Prop" end as they say with planes)

2.6 liter inline 4 engine used in various Mitsubishi models from 1978 to 1997 and Chrysler K-cars and their derivatives between 1981 and 1987.

Used in RWD, FWD, and AWD setups.

1978-1986 Mitsubishi Debonair

1986-1989 Mazda B2600

1987-1989 Dodge Raider

I suspect that using any K car drivetrain will go a loooooong way to ensuring class C entry.

This. A 2-53 would fit with some hood mods I bet. I see them for sale attached to irrigation pumps fairly often. They use a standard SAE bell housing pattern, and there are adapters available to go from that to a chevy pattern. Put a SM465 behind it for maximum agricultural feel.  You'll blow the budget but it will be so glorious I doubt the judges will care.

Here's a 3-53 in a truck, to give you an idea of the size. 2-53 is the same with one less cylinder.

It kind of has to hold true. The final is a 90 degree bevel gear so unless they put the pinion on the far side of the drive like a crazy person, the enmeshing teeth have to move “downward” to make the rear wheel turn forward.

Im sure there’s also some engineering reason you want the load going “downward” on the “ring gear” but I dono why.

I don't think I'm man enough. The nice thing is the e46 will fit just about anything I could dream up to throw under the hood. But Budget is a concern. This is race car number 2 for Me.

Run a Jag 4.0l with the "Co-Pilot" engine mounts. As far as getting into Class C, 60% of the time, it works every time.

Re: getting an e46 out of class A

Slant 6 was mentioned earlier in the thread. I don't know of an easy Jeep 5-speed swap; unfortunately the Slant is a unique bell housing pattern. They came with 4-speeds, but getting one with good race gears might be tricky or expensive. After looking into this for a while, I decided to keep the 3-speed auto with some tweaks to shift behavior.

Also, since a Slant 6 E30 has already been done (with a pushbutton automatic), putting one in an E46 might not get you many points. (That car was sadly retired a couple years ago due to body rot; the owner now races a 4-speed Valiant.)

Mercedes turbodiesel would be a different flavor of sacrilege and very likely Class C without being a total dog. Toyota 1UZ V8s are pretty cheap if you wanna go faster. It probably wouldn't be Class C, but Judge Phil would be amused.
