nooooo, just find a Renault! what could possibly go wrong?

After searching this morning, my girlfriend informs me that this is exactly 30 minutes from her Dad's place in Eugene:

And the trip back to New Orleans could, in theory, pass through Moscow, ID (8 Hours) & Paris, TX....and that we have a ton of crap we need to retrieve that's been in storage up there....

Ideally the whole thing would eventually end with "retreat" to the Napoleon House in the French Quarter

And the costumes would be, IMHO, hysterical. Especially in nowheresville...well, anywhere on the route.

There's a Simca Vedette with the flathead V8 locally that's been calling my name... This might just be the excuse I need...

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

hey, Judge Phil! I think we found a winner! check out this weather at the montana/idaho state line:
http://rwis.mdt.mt.gov/scanweb/lolo.shtml

It'll make those 30yr old french turds wishing they were subarus!

Also I had an Idea for a race route:  Moscow, ID to High Plains Raceway; have a race there, then the Rally continues to Paris, TX. Teams are free to embark on the oldest of french traditions at the raceway; Surrender! Prizes can entail ribbons tacked to baskets of cheap wine and cigarettes for making it "half way".

Ze weather, eet is no problem for ze French cars.  Ze Alpine A110, she loves ze snow...
I'd be more comfortable driving a French car in the Idaho snow and ice (sorry, neige et glace) than in the head-gasket-blowing Texas heat.

I'm totally down for this.  I know where there's a Peugeot 403 calling my name (though, like Phil, I'd rather find a 504) and, for added awesomeness, I can wear my great-grandfather's WWI Kepi (the "soup can" hat, like De Gaulle always wore.)

Have someone start out an hour later and give chase in a Lada. First car to get passed gets crushed. Perfect!

Why is everyone on about the crushing?  Let the car live.  Make the first to get passed by the Lada, drive the Lada.  Punishment enough!

I am mentally divergent in that I am escaping certain unnamed realities that plague my life there. When I stop coming here, I will be well...

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

could make the organizers chase in a russian limo. if they make it to the checkpoint/station before you you're considered "dead". They would have the option of trailering it the rest of the way to the Lemons event for a bottom-up finish, going home, or your car can get tagged with soviet flag stencils, and you "become" another soviet to chase down cars with.

Brilliant. This is like playing tag - if you get passed by a Lada, you're driving it until you pass someone else in it. Win!

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

What if you passed anyone in whatever you were driving? The passer has the option of swapping cars with the passee. You get their half-frozen half-dead horse. The incentive will be to bring a car no one else wants to be in.

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

Perhaps its just the uptight side of me speaking but car swapping on the open highway means letting someone else drive your heap on YOUR insurance policy.  Some of you guys I'd be ok with that, some stranger not so much.

Insurance! Damn, I knew there was a reason I was supposed to call AAA before I left! (not kidding)

So you mean I'm going to have to find another French car, eh? Sounds like fun when do we start?

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

yeah, i don't think car swapping would be a sound idea as a rule. if you guys want to do it as a side/gentleman's agreement, im sure nobody would have a problem.  It would probably give me incentive to never pass or be passed though so i wouldn't have to rock the piece of rolling tetanus you sods decide to bring!

Yeah Spank, it's supposed to hit planning stage as soon as we get judge phil off his ass and buy a Peugeot 504. I found one on CL in Orlando for $700 he could have picked up while he was there tongue

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

Too pedestrian / mundane for me.

Help me find a $500 2cv.

edit:
Here we go. In Hemans MI

So does this mean I need to fly out, try to make it run, and just start from there?

They guy I get BMW parts from has a backyard full of Renault 5s, including several turbos.

Seriously, you could run this whole event as a "Jack's Backyard" spec series. He's even got the Le Car from "Dude, Where's My Car".

Ok , so when is this thing going to happen. I'm serious. I need a goal to shoot for.

Without a deadline and a hell week to look forward to, I won't get anything done.

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

someone go kick phil's patootie into a 504, and we'll have one. at least that's apparently what it would take. If there's that much interest, I may try to organize something for it.

I had no idea there'd be so much interest in my stupid rally idea. Anyone who wants to run with the idea and actually organize the thing, go for it. Otherwise, y'all will have to wait for me to find a nice gasoline-engined 504.

we've found a few of them! one of them I left for you on an Orlando CL listing so you could drive it home from PBIR, lol.

Re: Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Rally?

I would also consider a Peugeot 604.
