I always loved the old 914s
A 914 can be caged. Orca Racing out of Houston/Baton Rouge has raced a 914 in Lemons for a number of races..
They aren’t that hard to cage, I’m doing one right now.
I've seen a few with LS drivelines in them... Just saying.

In the past, we've had a TON of 914 swaps: Mazda 12A, Subaru EJ20, Saturn Twin Cam, Buick 4.1L (!), certainly a few more I'm missing mentally, but the one that's done the best? The EASY 908/14 had a non-turbo, base-model Volkswagen ABA 2.0L in it.
I think a TDI swap would be a pretty cool and surprisingly fun setup.
So what gluten of a team bought it?
I don't know the name, but they race a Toyota 1.8l Celiaca.

So long as you don't want the roof panel back on
I know that you won’t believe me without pix, but the top does fit back on the car over the cage!
