Topic: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

So as some may have seen on facebook, our "team" is going to pilot a refrigerator, strangely shaped like a '64 220Sb Mercedes through the East coast rally in Jan and I thought I'd share some of its "resurrection", i.e get the brakes working, motor running and go!

The story goes it hasn't been on the road in an estimated 40 years, much of that spent in the back of a warehouse from the sounds (got independent confirmation of this from a random stranger we met at a local pick & pull that recognized the car when we stopped). It then sat outside for an unknown amount of time waiting for us to snatch it up and ruin it!

Overall its basically mint
- No rust (just rot in the rockers, floors, fenders, and trunk, nothing important)
- Runs like a sewing machine (dumped gas down carbs and coughed to life for 20-30 seconds when we looked at it)
- Stops on a dime (One caliper was removed because it was seized, the rear wheel cylinders are solid balls of what once was cast iron, and the ebrake handle is VERY shiney... great for admiring our reflections in as we barrel towards a snow bank)

Hoping to improve on atleast one or two of these in the coming two months. "Current progress"....

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

That mid rise lift what the best money I've ever spent. You can just spy the two post lift laying on the floor next to the merc that I've had for almost two years and haven't gotten around to putting up as I haven't directly needed too...

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

this junk is progressing. Almost ready to start shaking it down. Brakes are a go, motor coughs to life, but have some holes in the coolant system to remedy, trans serviced, carbs rebuilt, intake and exhaust rebuilt (those preheat flaps were a PITA!) etc... polished a bit of this turd too.... quite literally... one glaring issue thus far though.... heater core valves are corroded shut... time to see what we can do for heat!

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Is that a new brake booster?  Where did you find one?  I'm having a ton of trouble finding one that's not astronomically priced

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Yep it's a new booster pedro, I'll get the pn, but it's off a later Merc, I'm unsure if it's gonna work, battling massivd vacuum leaks at the moment from one of the carbs which may be a large stumbling block for this. I just took the thing out in the driveway and the brakes are boosted, but only when I rev it up, so it may not be enough "boost" or the vac leak is robbing it all.. we shall see...

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

So looks like unless I work some miracles the Heckflosse wont be making it on the rally. I'm currently in the Zenith carb hell that plagues many of them and trying to come up with alternate induction. SO just in case Ilast night  went and snagged this far too modern '82 240D for a song. It moves under its own power and the radio works, so clearly I need to break one of those two things to make it fit in with the rest of my fleet.

'82 240D in all its glory,

Already snagged some spares for it from the local pick and pull and even found a surprise in a construction van!

In the mean time the Heckflosse moves, stops, has a couple lights, close  to having heat (soldered up both blown heater cores, dismantled and fixed f'ed up blower switch), a leak free exhaust, and runs for all of 10 minutes or so until its off choke and the thing dies. Have gone through the carbs 3 times, flattened every surface I can get my hands on, ghetto sealed the leaking throttle shafts by drilling the bases for o-rings (or for boost, lets get crazy!), but now that all the exterior vacuum leaks are cured, either the idle circuits on them are completely f'ed or they have the dreaded Zenith warp that makes them nothing more than expensive door stops. I have a mad plan of putting two 34 pict VW carbs on it and calling it a day, but need a lot of linkage and to make some adapters and get some miles on her running gear before hitting the road so who knows, enjoy! Looking forward to blasting south in something, even if its not the 64, hell its got twice the power of the backup 240D!

So close.....

And Pedro the PN for that booster is Cardone: 53-5936. Again at idle it slowly will drag the pedal down, and seems ok when reved up, so I'm unsure if its slightly underboosted.... wont know till the carb situation is solved.

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

What's the displacement and RPM range? Maybe a single barrel from a Ford 300 six will get you going?

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

About 100 horse, 2.2 liter redline at 5k i think? Was thinking about a single as well, but would need to fab a dual to single adaptor too. I have a side draft from a beetle turbo setup that would prolly work great, but again need to make a mani hmm

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Some straight pipe runners using gas piping?

2.2 you say? Maybe a pair of Weber 32/36's can be adapted? Then dual progressives!

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

VW 34 PICT x2 sounds like a sound plan. I hate carbs, and I hate those Zeniths most of all. Except for the 4 barrel Solex on a 280S. ACtually, I'd just take the 240D.

COme to think of it... The 240D engine will indeed go right in there. You will need to make some plumbing to make the air filter fit, but maybe that's the way to go.

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

The zeniths are progressives already Jimmy wink 35 primaries, 35/40. The dual 34 PICTs would certainly be simple to make the adapters just haven't had time to make them, would also need to refurb a couple 34 picts (I have a dozen or so so not a terrible ordeal. Just don't know if there's time. Gonna change the fluids in the 240 and go register it today and see what the weekend brings. Type44, so the 616 will just bolt right up to the w111 auto? If so the low mileage 240 in the pick and pull motor may be an option hmmmm, diesel Heckflosse!

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

I'm not CERTAIN the 616 will work with that automatic, but what about leaving the 722 automatic attached when you put it in? It's got like four sets of holes to mount a transmission crossmember, doesn't it?

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Ah, already progressive and better flowing.  I don't know much about European carbs, or small displacement, other than my old Dodge L head.

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Ah touche! Wouldn't be terrible to get slightly newer tranny in it either way, hmmm

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

There is a thread on peachparts that reports the original transmission would bolt right up. The only issue is that the oil filter placement on the newer (w123) om615/616/617 engines is in the way of the brake booster on the w110/w111 and w114/w115; the solution is to get the oil filter mount from a w115.

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Well the final nail was driven in the 220''s coffin, got a bout of the flu or something that has put me out of commission for the past few days and the pick and pull diesel was a deader from the looks, so the 240 is going to be our trusty steed on this misadventure. I've got the vw carb manifold adaptors designed up, just need to get on the mill to make them, so perhaps next rally the 220 will make its debut. The though of putting a 616 diesel in this pile is starting to grow on me as well, thanks for the info all! Just think most go for adding power with a swap, this would certainly be the opposite!

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Good choice, the W123 will always get you there. Had to scrape the windshield on mine this morning to go to work... Are you comfy with the cold-start abilities of this particular 616? I had one 300D that got to carry a spare battery in the rear footwell just for extra CCA in wintertime smile

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Well it certainly labors at low temps, but still starting so far. "Skips" a bit when it first warms up, but I assume an injector service and a valve adjustment may help that

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

The 616 has glow plugs like the 617, right? Make sure (most of) those are in working order. The 250k-mile 300D I used to have was so thrashed it didn't even like starting up in 70 degree weather when the glow plugs went out.

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Yessir! I just got the carbon reamer and such to service them in the mail yesterday if it comes down to it. Luckily they are the later pencil style so slightly easier to deal with, although I was hoping to have some spares, but the won't be here in time hmm
Drove the 240 to work today (90 mile round trip) didn't skip a beat although with the high winds and snow this morning it was certainly an interesting test drive!

Re: Heckflosse redemption for East Coast Rally

Starting fluid can act as failsafe glow plugs, in the event they stop working (fuse gets fried, relay fails, wire breaks, or an early style plug dies), but it will be mighty pissed off until it warms up a bit.
