Topic: What about parts cars.

We have one parts car we are planning on taking to the race.  It just happens to be parts car for another project still in progress.  Do we have to account for our equally rusty parts car?

Yesterday I picked up another yes another Camaro for $150 and we will likely part it out and come out ahead on that car. Keep in mind its only slightly less rusty parts and the goal is less holes for our Lemons racer.  If we were to use a few parts from that car how do we account for that?  After its dropped at the junk yard and a few parts are pulled and sold we should be ahead actually.

BTW Anyone know what a car is fetching at the junkyard?  I have to imagine the Cars for Clunkers program is making scrap metal go down as well as junk cars.

Re: What about parts cars.

Parts cars brought to the race don't count in the budget, unless you're cooking the books with some weird accounting methods and using the parts car as a money loophole. If you use pieces from a free parts car (or one that you made free by scrapping/selling off parts), they don't count against the $500... but make sure you document everything.

Oh we can't wait to show the pics.  We've done at least 10lbs of weight reduction just shaking off rust big_smile  Wait until you see the other 3000 lbs of rust.

Re: What about parts cars.

We picked up a dirt cheap identical parts car for our Colt (not hard to imagine).  We've taken the engine/tranny out and a few of the suspension pieces off and thrown them all in the back of the truck to take to the race.  The shell is off to the metal recycling yard.  This way we have a replacement ready for major parts should we need them, but we don't have to carry a whole car around or tear stuff apart during the race.

We used a sawzall on our parts car, put everything in 3 blue totes and added that to the engine sitting in the back of the truck. It worked out really nice and you don't have to haul around a rusted steel shell to the track.
