In October of 1991 I drove from Eugene to San Diego with a fellow geology student to give a talk at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. We kept to the east on our way there so we could stop at Yosemite and Sequoia, but afterwards drove north on I-5 straight into the Christo umbrella swarm without any foreknowledge of its existence. (Yeah, we both led sheltered lives.) Quite effectively surreal, particularly without warning. I've got photos, but of course they're on film and stashed away in a box somewhere....
